Not quite VR...

I also found it really annoying that the left and right function panels would flick on and off when looking around the cockpit. Having them set in the menu options to 'do nothing' when looked at solved the irritation. I still have the focus UI functions of course via the HOTAS so I'm not missing anything.

I never knew there was that option - that's irritated me for a while! Thanks for pointing it out. :)

You have to move your head though. All that extra effort, compared to eye movement. :D

I think I prefer something that follows my head movement (not that I've tried the eye tracker). I have a large screen (over 3m wide), and I often look in one corner of the screen while I use my head to go to another... I'm not sure that eye tracking would work so well for me.

399 for Rift + Touch is a fantastic value. There is a first rate game Library out now with the latest really getting its stride on how VR can change gaming.

Elite is great in VR, but there is much more...

The 4c does both, it works well as a traditional head tracker on it's own...future fimware updates will allow switching off either function individually from the menu or in game (according to Tobii) instead of on or off for both since it's the most requested function on their forum.

One issue with the eyetracker maybe the screen size. At the moment it covers my 29" monitor fine, but I've read of folks with larger monitors having issues in not being able to reach the corners.

Damn you Mole... I was happy with looking at getting EDtracker, but now these videos...
I'm quite happy with my EDTracker. It really brings the game to life, although I'm sure "real VR" would be better, but a headtracker is a lot less expensive.

How does it work though? I mean, how far do you move your eyes to shift a panel, and what happens if you want to pick up that mug of tea?

The 4C tracker is an absolutely superb piece of kit which I've had for quite some time. You can calibrate it to track both head and eye movement independently and then adjust those calibrations to suit in terms of range and speed so there's a good level of customisation.

I personally have head tracking set fast for combat and eye tracking set slow so that I can look at internal instruments in more detail. As far as looking away to pick up that mug of tea goes, it isn't really an issue because you're averting your gaze from the screen anyway so when you return the tracker picks up that movement and re orientates its position. You are also able to bind a 'centre view' command if you want to quickly return to a forward view.

I personally have experienced no lag in it's tracking performance. I do have a pretty decent PC and this gives a consistent 60 FPS whilst rapidly moving my head around.

Short of VR, I find this an absolute must for an immersive experience and I wonder how I ever played without it.

I've had the TrackIR 4 for years and have always refused to play any cockpit game that would not support it. I cannot play a game like this without being able to look around anymore. Now I have the rift and OMG, I've disconnected the trackIR for now. :)

My K/D ratio in CQC near halves when I don't use a head tracker or VR. It makes a big difference in control, especially if you are used to motorcycle/snow skiing/driving cars and recognise the whole "you go where you look" concept.

Blasting IR light directly into your retina is probably not such a great idea long term.

I have a Rift, and bought Ed tracker wireless for my second rig.

The eye tracking is totally safe. You don't look at the IR cameras, you look at the screen.

Tobii have their background in assistive technology for people with disabilities. They have safety requirements, well beyond regular gaming equipment. My son have CP and he uses their I15 and I12 models for communication(synthetic speech like Steven Hawking), operation of remote controls and general computer access.

The main weakens of the system is outdoor daylight and direct sunlight in particular. Other than that it usually works well in most conditions .

When it comes to head vs eye tracking, I think the main decider is screen size. If your screen is large enough that you naturally move your head when using it, you will probably benefit from head tracking. If you use 27" or less, I would definitely go for the Tobii. Above 30", I would skip it.

I really don't want to end up buying something that will more than likely get better in the second generation.
Personally, I'd wait until the third generation before buying in as second generation will only be an incremental improvement. Of course, a case can be made to be patient and wait for fourth gen equipment as that will be truly stunning performance. Then again, GPU's will be playing catch-up, so best wait for fifth gen before slapping down your credit card. They'll be more efficient and it's likely to be much better performance.

I use mine with a 40" screen and it performs well, the calibration with dissolving the dots works without issue. Difference is I don't have my 4c attached to my monitor but on a small stand that sits behind my keyboard so it's closer to me - I'm looking into the corners of a 40" screen but the tracker 'thinks' the screen is where it is so would be smaller for the same eye angles...
...that's my theory anyway, it works :)

That's actually ingenious! :D

I use an Avegant Glyph - https://www.avegant.com/video-headset, which has head tracking and does very nice Side by Side 3d. It's an odd looking thing, but it does have the advantage of not blocking my view like an Occulus or other VR goggle, so I can still glance down to see where my keyboard is and type. Price isn't much better though but...

Unlike the the OR, the Glyph uses only a single HDMI connection (for me it's monitor 3), and...

I can plug it in to my PS4, my Roku, various models of drone controllers, or pretty much anything else with an HDMI output - which should also include the Xbox.. but I already pay a fortune to Microsoft for licensing, so they're not getting anything more from me for a game console.

Interesting.

How do you set that up to work as an HMD in ED. Do you use SteamVR?

Of course there is always the mobile phone option with google cardboard & certain mobile apps. granted it's likely to be less than stellar performance from it (depending on your wifi signal) but it should still work quite well - & cheaply!

I can't fathom why people buy EDTracker for those ludicrous amounts of money, when there is TrackIR clones which you can get pre-assembled for ~20€. And if you're not shy of the soldering iron, the highest cost of the set-up would be used PS3Eye cam.

I found I don't want to play Elite without my TrackIR clone, then moved to VR. I can't fathom why do you want to wait for unspecified "2nd gen" MoleHD, while the price of the Rift+Touch is sooo sweet now. Life's short, do you want to spend it waiting or having fun? At 450€ it is almost a steal, considering my Vive was 350€ more expensive (boxing day discount), and that's without deluxe audio strap which should be sent to all owners complimentary with apologies for the crappy ragtag strap the original 899€ equipment comes bundled with.

We've been waiting for Scam Citizen and Elite development for how long now? Consider that a lesson, return that gizmo and buy a proper VR headset ;-)

lol, I wish people would stop reminding me. Every time I see this, I end up going to Amazon, reading the reviews, and just managing to stop myself buying it... :D

Just buy it. I was on the fence about getting a VR system for ages, the price point and general lack of worthwhile games being the main reason. I'm so glad I took the plunge. I've not played anything flat screen since I got the headset. I likely will at some point as I'm a huge CoH fan and that doesn't support VR, but for games like ED, Project CARS and Dirt Rally it's a must have imo. Changes the experience like you can't imagine. Also, Star Trek Bridge Crew is excellent, especially in multiplayer.
