Say NO to Green Chauvinism!

Hi there, I have a question about Earth-like worlds. Why does there is only green vegetation on them? Doesn't it depends on the atmospheric composition and star class?

SAY NO TO GREEN CHAUVINISM, MORE VARIETY TO EARTH-LIKE WORLDS! )))

Earth like means like Earth no?

Lots of water worlds with differing atmospheric compositions and probably different coloured plant life.

I think that Earth-like means comfortable for people, and I think that I could be pretty comfortable on a world with, like, yellow- or violet-colored vegetation, i would only need proper levels of oxigen and CO 2 )))

The colour of plants depends on the chlorophyll. On Earth, it reflects green, absorbs red and blue, since earth plants are adapted to the variations in wavelength caused by Rayleigh Scattering. Plants on other planets are theorised (according to my botanist girlfriend) to most likely appear to be black or red, if they have photosynthesis at all.

I suspect there are more recent articles but my quick search shows up this article about plant colouration on planets around other suns: https://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/news/topstory/2007/spectrum_plants.html
This pops up from time to time and it seems likely that if there is plant like life around other stars it would adapt to harvest the most energy with the least effort and probably end up a different colour (if the star light spectrum is different).

Or sparkling bright, if the sun is heavy on ultra violett and the the low(er) enregy light that is emitted (when the electrons fall back from their exited state to lower energy orbitals) therefore is in our visual spectrum (in contrast to the infra-red here on earth).

Photosynthesis was "invented" independently multiple times here on earth, by the way. It seems to be a thing, with corbon based life. So the likeliness for alien "plants" seems not to be so low.

More variety to ELWs!

- Plants don't need to be green, even on earth there are some plants that aren't green.
- there is no need for pants, organisms like cyanobacteria could be very common and higher organisms not yet evolved.
- the land could be dead and all live could be in the oceans turning the land into beige, radish, blackish deserts (live not yet evolved to go to the land)
- micro-organisms could dominate the sea, turning it into a different color than blue

- there is no need for pants

No need to tell me, I've been going commando since leaving the bubble.

OT: I'd love to see different coloured Earth-Like Worlds, but how easy would they be to recognise as earth like from a gameplay perspective? You'd be a bit miffed if you passed up a beige or brown ('cos the terrain gen loves that colours) planet, only to later find that it was an earth like in disguise.

I will add more of my thoughts, it will be better to change the class of earth-like to Carbon-based Life-habitable worlds, or something like that

I have to agree. [yesnod]

I think we can file this one under the category of placeholder.

I'm pretty sure DB and others are aware that planet life on different earthlikes might have different coloured plants.

lol the typos in these replies are hilarious, so just to sum up:

the ELF needs to be "comfartable", however there's "no need for pants" and apparently all the life could be in the oceans turning the land into a "radish".

excellent - glad we made that clear :)
