So how is it that a conda mass locks a type 9?

Like the title says, I was running cargo missions in the old type 9 when I submitted to an interdiction thinking I could just shield tank a few shots. To my surprise my frame shift was charging slow, like really slow, like sidewinder trying to get away from a corvette slow. How is this possible I thought the type 9 was more massive. It was an npc conda before you ask.

Technically the Conda is heavier than the T9. It can take more cargo. Ships will mass lock other ships will comparable mass. In fact even a Python can mass lock a T9, happened to me a month ago.

Mass lock values are static arbitrary numbers, they don't have anything to do with actual ship mass because that would make too much sense and we can't have that.

This. It's nothing to do with realism. It's all gameplay.

seen it happen... well, until my turrets locked on anyway

Nothing with a mass lock factor lower than the ship trying to enter SC can mass lock that vessel. An Eagle has a much lower mass lock factor than an Anaconda and cannot mass lock the conda.

If you were masslocked, something else was the cause. Some of the higher mass lock vessels have very significant mass lock ranges--a Cutter can mass lock from 5.5km away, for example--so the ship mass locking you may not be obvious.

It would make more sense if the mass lock was based on the actual relative ship weights at the moment. This could also make for some interesting game play.

They need to just stop calling it "Mass Lock" because that is not what it is. It's "Gameplay Lock"

Imagine how fun it would be to actually care about mass in that fashion though? There would be a benefit to engineer mods that increase mass, because it would keep your enemies from running away as easily.

Yeah, because combat ships don't already have bad enough jump ranges...

Still begs the question why Frontier chose that this vulnerable ship can be mass locked by a lot of ships. Slow, not very maneuverable, mediocre shields and the increased hull strength doesn't really help if you fly a giant space brick.
