Star Citizen Thread v6

Not to defend ED here, but some people really seem have put their expectations for space sim genre way too high. Technically it is all possible, but not at once, not without huge costs, and not without considerable compromises to make it even look like something regular people would want to play around with on regular basis. I personally felt NMS had a chance to be nice little game which actually bigger depth than ED because of single player nature - before hype, high expectations, and HG own marketing game destroyed it all. They are still games, they aren't full sims and most likely never will be. It is just too much for any company to handle, and really won't work together. If you wonder why ED moves so slowly with tweaking and changing features, that's why.

I think Star Citizen is culmination of this 'imagine this as a game' culture and fitting end to all of it. It will be healthy for genre imho, especially because not only ED exists, but NMS and tons of other, smaller space games, all looking for their own unique angle (Everspace, e.g.) and delivering it in spades. As for ED adding space legs yes, GTA in space is kinda possible (while still having strict set of actions possible), but requires very forward thinking team with long term goals. Either FD, or someone else will do that eventually. I just don't see CIG being able to pull that off.

The thing is, when DB (FD) says they will eventually do it I believe them, when CR (CIG) says something I just laugh now.

And so the Gamescom 2017 hype begins....

Ah, the upcoming demo. Chances of it being something new and awesome that will be available in the PU? I give it 0%. Chances of it being something heavily scripted and controlled (while of course being touted all done in the game engine). Ill give that one 99%.

Also, someone has never heard of the tragedy of /u/tfaddy and the inedible sock.

Very casual how he links "Big Surprise" with "Can't wait to get 3.0 into players hands..." almost as if he is hoping people will conflate the two and be hyped for 3.0 Surprise launching at Gamescom?...

Well, Gearbox did say Colonial Marines was in-engine, too. Remember how that ended up? :p

Also for some reason the first thing that came to mind after reading tragedy of was.. http://imgur.com/4VU1kfI

Oh well, let's see what they are going to PR off at Gamescom then, shall we?

Maybe the big surprise will be that 3.0 won't be out this year. Oh, wait, that won't be a surprise :D

Forget 3.0 this year! Who cares about that when we can have 4.0 next year? It'll be much more superfidelicious and 3.0 would've just been a stepping stone towards it anyway.

MVP official release...suprise!

Yeah I have no doubt at all that the "mvp" is coming...maybe 10% of the development promises intact with a few basic gameplay loops. CR will then stand up bold as brass and state that development will continue as long as there is a will by the brave commandos to continue supporting the "dream".

Hearing about this mvp over 18 months ago was what made me push the refund button. That and the rubbish they were producing.

What! You mean if I forgo bread today, that I can have jam tomorrow and the next day?

Well, I seem to have heard that before, quite a few times now, but... okay then...

So biggest reveal is that CIG has gone bankrupt? That's really not a reveal....

edit: of course they have done some work for Gamescom...showing some bling for trade shows is only way CIG can survive. It is just not enough anymore.

All the stuff they were supposed to show at Gamescon last year re-imagined for Gamescon 2017. I'm sort of expecting a long SQ42 demo and 3.0 demo and release date with concept sale.

Makes Gamescon a joke though, developers can show up with half-baked smoke & mirrors one year and come back a year later for another try without all that messy business of having to plan the actual game and release it. Especially naughty when your essentially taking pre-ordered. They should be made to disclaimer their presentation so it's known that this isn't for a consumer product coming soon, this is a crowd funding pitch that they do annually.

Well, every time AAA or even respected developer does that (*cough*Witcher 3*cough*) he gets blasted heavily for this. But not CIG and not for SC. But I suspect this time gloves will be off for media - they smell blood and will magnify every small error CIG will make.

They will show same demo they showed for that gaming media. It is their 'money making demo', while real release is still impossible to ship due of broken nature of the code.

I think everyone that pitches the same "coming soon" product at Gamescon more than one year in a row should be forced to have a Peter Molyneux face stuck on their branding and live streams. Then a further Peter Moylneux face for each subsequent year.

Star Citizen will have the most Molyneux's

I think that if Star Citizen's had any backbone they would boo Roberts off the stage. How can anyone stand there and listen to him spin the project after what he said after last year?

Didn't they also say that they wouldn't waste any more precious dev time on things like demos built specifically for tradeshows, so either they play 3.0 as it exists or they go back on their word (yet again) and show "intentions".

I think you've hit the nail on the head perfectly.

Even in a well controlled environment, and I think as an example FDev do a decent job of controlling and dampening expectations, people can run away with ideas and get far too invested and excited, ultimately leading to excess dissatisfaction.

Unfortunately however Chris seems unable to reign in his imagineering, to the huge detriment of CIG, the game and the community. Is 10 for The Chairman still running? I used to cringe watching it as he confirmed the wildest elements as coming in game, and always done so much better than anyone had ever done before.

I hope 3.0 comes out this year. I hope it's stable and shows strong progress. But with so much debt built up now, I can't see things ending well. Sadly.
