Did you know the Beluga is in the top 30% of DPS ships out there? (A bit of statistics)

So, i've often wondered about which ships beat other ships on average in terms of DPS and how much power you get from having bigger hardpoints.

I always went with the rough estimate of 2 smalls = 1 medium, 3 smalls = 1 large, and 4 smalls = 1 huge. (you can see that in the spreadsheet on the ships sheet with the Size count column).

Looking at the stats, that's actually overestimating things a bit.

Ok, so what i did was take from coriolis (which may have errors) the full DPS values of all the weapons that come in various sizes and mountings. This meant i didn't include missiles, mines, rails, or PAs in the stats. However, i did look at the latter two, and their DPS ratios don't actually scale all that well compared with some, so its not like they would have skewed the results for bigger weapons up much, perhaps have dragged things down a little.

Now, just to get a disclaimer out of the way, yes, DPS is not a perfect measurement. Turrets can stay on target longer than fixed with many ships, although a good pilot in an agile ship can perhaps do better with fixed in terms of ToT. But then you also have to consider things like the distributor and whether running low energy weapons or high energy ones. Doing a similar chart with DPE vs max capacitor size and running different pips to WEP could produce all sorts of results. And of course, smaller weapons suffer a damage penalty to larger ships. No need to argue this sort of stuff, i think most are aware.

If you take a look at the spreadsheet linked below, you will note that the actual ratio between sizes of weapons is roughly 1.5, with some variation. As a small point, turrets scale slightly better than gimballs which in turn scale slightly better than fixed. Its rather minor though, but perhaps offset by larger turrets turning slower than smaller ones.

Anyway, onto the actual results. Look at the Ratio Count column.

And look at that, Beluga is sitting nicely in the top 30% of all liners... and ships in general. Some might be surprised to see the Anaconda ahead of the Corvette, be even more surprising is the Cutter is ahead of it as well. Also nice to see the Gunship up there (not surprisingly) but higher than the Python, if only just.

Can i also say gooooo Cobra Mk4! ;)

Full details here (formula were lost copying from excel to google): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P1E7-6xlZTtQP8lqGRp1ZWlsyRzuzl9k2iriee-gSKs/edit#gid=0

Anyway, make of it what you will. ;)

in b4 "buff the 'vette!" complaints.

Good data, bro. It's always nice for people to see this kinda info and take their own conclusions away from it. Would be even nicer for some specific figures, but...this is slightly in depth ground.

Also, rep to anyone that makes a combat beluga off the back of this. 5 C2 hardpoints are actually kinda nice in their own way.

Buff the vette! Too early?

*chuckles*

Guys, just remember that higher class weapons penetrate better, meaning that even if raw DPS figures are higher on a given ship, it may not be better at DPSing bigger ships.

Big hardpoints=better for big ships. For example the C3 slot on the DBE might mean it has a better raw output against a large enemy ship than a cobra mk IV and its 3 small hardpoints competing with it, even though the cobra has a technical higher DPS value here.

Keep in mind that DPS numbers like that assume that all hardpoints are hitting all of the time, so you can't really apply this to actual damage in combat.

For instance, the iClipper has the DPS of 2 med and 1 large sustained, depending on whether the enemy is on the left or right hand side of the ship ;)

Its why turrets are the most superior weapons ;)

You jest but I believe this was experimented with in an early PvP league game...I seem to recall an entire side using turrets on this exact basis; maintain time on target at all times and just run about.

Again, if I recall correctly, they got their butts kicked when the godawful DPS of turrets and slow tracking tripped them up.

Nice try, though. Would have been comic beyond measure if after all the Git Gud requests, the PvP league had been won by a side boosting about with turrets doing their thing.

The Corvette's Large hardpoint positioning is also terrible, so the damage on paper would be slightly slower in reality because alot of the time it isn't hitting anything unless you're pointing the Corvette's nose at the target in front of you.

It would be nice if it was repositioned more towards the front of the ship (just under the nose) because then that would solve SO MANY problems with the Large hardpoint...

I keep saying this as well and get jumped on by the fixed wep PvP purists.

Time on Target is the most important factor. You do less damage with turrets, but they are on target a lot more resulting (in my mind) with more damage long term. Ships with limited agility can use turrets effectively. A pair of C1 turreted beams can keep shields down nicely as other weps take the hull apart.

Blow them up and post videos?
