Completely agree with Tuub. Don't get dragged in by people who incorrectly claim that ED needs to load maps. We all know it's purely a matter of instance negotiation. Let's keep this thread about SC only.

ED loading maps is only being brought into the thread because the big sell of the SC Gamescon demo was 'seamless transition between ground and space', and the press for this started a few weeks ago. The MO is to point at something that other games are doing "wrong" and show a video of SC doing it "right".

For example, David Swofford re-tweeting a PCGamesN article that said SC planetary landings "blow NMS out of the water".

Once you point out that this is happening, instead of engaging with the poster, it stops. I think we should be allowed to point it out in order that it stops BEFORE the thread gets dragged off topic and needs heavy moderation.

The helmet visor that they are using in the live-stream - its frame looks like player is looking through swimming goggles... also it bobs like crazy, kind of annoying to say at least.
Also they said that ships actually behaves and handles different in atmosphere but its hard to spot for me, still looking like same space fps movement.

The first and last time I tried the PTU the motion blur + bobbing was the death of me. Trying the /dance emote from first person is a surefire way to a barf bag :D

I'm sure today's presentation will contain as many bells and whistles as they can throw at it, and be as well rehearsed as any live demo ever can be.

Overall the evangelists will find plenty to enthuse over, the critical will have seen enough over the days to feel no more optimistic than they did before, and 3.0, as described this time last year will, yet again, not materialise.

In the grander scheme, night will still follow day, people will go about their daily routine, and SC and SQ42 will continue being a dream that, one day, we all hope arrives and is at least decent. Just not anytime soon.

Happy Friday one and all.

Amen.

Just connected to the livestream. What time is the big reveal supposed to be? I'm just watching the regurgitated repeats of the last few days and at the point of connection they were doing the "fly really high then jump out waving my arms like a madman" thing that has them so amused for some reason.

EDIT: How many times are they going to try something crazy right at the 15min switch over? Pretty sure this is now planned. This time it was trying to get an Ursa on to the back ramp of a ship. But oh noes, they ran out of time so we can't see what happened.

9PM CEST which is 8PM in the UK

Been watching the stream, everything is broken, literally everything. Jared has apparently said this is the "legit 3.0 build" but I must have missed that bit.

And that will be where we get a peek behind the curtain, what the real 3.0 will be like when it is released to the public. If I was being charitable I would guess that the real 3.0 would be too big a thing to show off to the many people that turned up to Gamescom and still give as many people as possible a go. At least that is the reason we are told there is a 15min reset, not for stability reasons but it's the quickest way to reset the servers for the next group of 10 players to have a go.

That does make sense, in that respect only. Get 'em in, have a bash, get 'em out again, production line style.

Perhaps their budget doesn't stretch far enough to have a larger booth but I attended the other games launch event and there were far more than 10 seats at Duxford.

I hope that CR has a good presentation and shows some new stuff off to us that doesn't involve trying to pursuade us that picking up a shipping box is cool.

I've watched this demo being described by CIG over the course of the week as a "very very very early alpha", the "legit 3.0 build", a "build of 3.0 with some features disabled" and Chris didn't refer to it as an alpha at all but as the actual game in that GameStar.de interview.

They don't even know what it is or what to call it. When it breaks it's an alpha, when it's being promoted in an interview it's the actual game.

You mean something like the Radiant AI that Bethesda had since .. oh I don't know... Oblivion and the advent of the Gamebryo engine? Though technically the Morrowind NPCs already had schedules and routines. And if I would dig even deeper, even the Ultima 7 NPCs had that :p

Yep, before you know it we'll have NPCs in Star Citizen tell you "I saw a Mud Crab the other day" whilst they are standing directly on top of the corpse of a Mud Crab.

Or space police chanting "Halt! Halt!" in creepy unison as they hone in on you ;) But on topic, was just pulling a few games from the top of my head that had implented schedules for NPCs without having to sacrifice a goat at the altar of AI dark magic, so it's not as if it hasn't been done before. But when it comes to SC, everything has to be groundbreaking and never before seen. Creautes would like a word about learning artificial digital organisms :p

I just watched a segment of the stream where they try to park a rover on the roof of a spaceship. Seriously, there is nothing like a newtonian flight physic. The movement of the spaceship looks super unrealistic, thruster firing and orientation make no sense. Spaceships that have a mass of several tons should also show some form of inertia, that is not the case here at all. See yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SD8k3M15OiY&t=2h45m11s

What is happening there, does this program actually have some form of physics based flightmodel, like kerbal space program, or is this just a marketing thing?

The explanation that I believe that is given is that the ships thrusters are so powerful they easily overcome external forces like gravity as well as inertia. If anyone watched Andromeda: Ascendant they had a device that reduced the ships enourmous mass to a few kg. Contrived explanations perhaps but nothing less could explain the way the ships move in this game.

It kind of reminds me of those bits of blurry footage of UFO's that some of you may have seen, where the UFO seems to fly about oddly until you realise its a tiny little model hanging on a bit of cat gut and not a 50 foot interstellar exploration vehicle piloted by little grey men.

I am not a game engine dev, but looks like this happens, when you try to build space game by using engine that was developed for single player FPS games...or they are just totally incompetent..

I think the ship is some variant of Cutlass. Most of them are supposed to have a mass of well over 30 tonnes, though it's not clear if that's with or without cargo. The mass of the Ursa isn't listed. If it's supposed to be a really tough, armoured APC, it could have a mass in the 20 to 30 tonne class I suppose, but more likely it's a lot lighter than that. Based on the velocity of the Cutlass after the impact, I would've guessed that the mass of the two vehicles was pretty much identical, so yeah, the way the ship responded to being nudged by the Ursa was a bit crap, to say the least.

EDIT: Also if the Ursa really is that heavy, you'd expect it to lean a lot more on it's suspension during a turn. It behaves more like a far lighter vehicle IMO.

3.0 as it stands. In other words, it could be anywhere between 3.0 and more or less what is already available in 2.6.x PU with some bits added on.

Since we haven't seen anything else playable other than the cryengine FPS level, one presumes then that is all they have to show that is really playable and that is the current state of the 3.0 build.

Unless CR shows us something later today that is actually playable, and not just another sandworm demo... oh, he did that, erm, dinosaur demo, with lasers on its head.
