OMG - Thargoid Cinematic was ACE!

Surely the point the of the video was they were not expecting trouble. Mankind had got fed up with being disabled by flower power and were intending to try new weaponry and see its impact with a view to stamping out these cheeky petals.

Unfortunately this time a lesson got taught.

You're right except .. what if your mission is to quantify the effectiveness of your new weapon?

I haven't counted how many missiles were fired .. but that salvo brought the Thargoid down to what 40%?
No, 50% .. Mason asked for confirmation because this matters; how many missiles? how many percent hull?

Palin might know the weapon woud have some effect, but how much?

This makes a difference to weapon design because you need to know how many warheads, how much yield make it effective as a weapon, out of the lab and in the wild? Unfortunate for Mason though, it retaliated.

Very true.

However, telemetry from the battle can be viewed later. So just going all out against then would be fine.

The other mistake they made, was when it started regenerating at 10% / 1 second or so, that's a first sign that the mission is not going as planned, and it's best to leave with the data you have.

:p

Of course, if everyone acted with a shred of common sense in cinematic movies, we'd be in for some very dull and short movies.

Take Alien Covenant.
"We're carrying thousands of civilians to a new world, this is our mission."
"Oh look, we're picking up a signal, shall we investigate?"
"No, it's not our mission. We cant risk thousands of lives out of curiosity. Report it and continue"
"Roger that."

The end.

As far as he knew it was a weapon test, possibly even sold to him as pure scientific research.
He wasn't dressed for battle - for me that's the clue here. Helmets on, for any risk of hull breach.

I have to say that if you're testing weapons by actually firing them at a huge, technologically advanced vessel that has already demonstrated the abilityh to completely shut down your ships, it's probably reasonable to anticipate that they might not just sit there waiting for you to complete your scans. The issue isn't really whether he's an explorer or not but that regardless of his profession he must have an IQ roughly comparable to a particularly stupid cactus.

Hi there, Mr Armchair General. You don't seem to be too familiar with the work of Sun Tzu yourself. There's quite a bit about "knowing your enemy" in it.

If you do some reading on my follow up post I make some points that it's clear prior research on the aliens was already done base on their Cmdr's technology/weapons... but moving on

But who am I kidding, you're just here to tell everyone how bad this game is.

Man had that chambered and ready to go didn't you?.... despite in that quote I make no mention about the game or it's overall quality, just the trailer. As far as the bit about delays.... Good or bad game this season has had delays FD has announced that so that's not debatable.
I'm sorry I offended your delicate civilian sensibilities, please seek your nearest safe space.

No, two races are not currently canon (though that might be something they do in future, we just don't know yet). They were from the original Elite '84 version, but there was a lot of sentient aliens in that, it was a lot more like Star Trek. In that (or rather the accompanying short story) there was reference to different Thargoid races. That's been adopted as fanon since, and now a lot of people think it's real.

Current cannon is Klaxxions and Osrerians, both being Thargoids. Mentioned in a couple of the ED books that are considered as lore.

1984 Elite had athargoids and Osrerians being a different species that looked near identical.

Z...

I love how people just assume why aren't all the guns going, lul obvious nubs are obvious.

Except testing doesn't work like that; it never works like that. You test, you record telemetry, you perhaps test again, or you stop, make changes then go back to testing. They didn't even know if the defensive measures against the 'pulse' would work; they're also not in military gear. Oh no, this is can we resist a pulse? lovely, right record that would you Jones, ok let's see if we can hit the thing. They don't usually shoot so this should test weapon effectiveness.

What was clear, was that they weren't perhaps expecting the response they got. Probably because maybe they thought the missiles wouldn't be effective, since they'd not be used? Or that since the sleepy flower people make weird noises and move on, that'd be the outcome. A bunch of scientists and some combat jocks rock up, poke a hibernating bear which (has usually been otherwise non responsive) essentially hops up and proceeds to rip them a new one.

It's a cinematic, it's supposed to convey some ideas. I think it more or less does that. Namely don't poke bears. ;)

Alien Covenant.

A silly movie, utterly silly and not worth the cinema ticket price.

Even though Veteran Commander Mason and and his troops died in that encounter I think their mission was a success.

If they hadn't stopped firing and immediately destroyed the Thargoid ship, we wouldn't have learnt that Thargoid ships can self-heal themselves. For all we know, his orders might have been for them to shoot the first barrage of missiles and then wait to see what happened.

So... I think Veteran Commander Mason and his colleagues deserve a medal. :)

It doesn't mean Mason knew anything about the wreck reports (unconfirmed reasons?) though.
He's an explorer (from his flight suit) and could have been out in the black for months, or years.

As far as he knew it was a weapon test, possibly even sold to him as pure scientific research.

Ignorance probably the only reason to volunteer for a mission like this without a capital ship with you imo.

So does that mean we will get military suits?

This is what I was waiting for! I'll let the team know that they're now allowed to do more of them. Let's hope they do! ;)
But only if they cannot be used to enhance game play. Because shiny clips are out-of-place in MMO games. They don´t make the game better. This is not Metal Gear Solid.;)
