News Forum Downtime - Evening of Sept 25, into morning of the 26th

I reckon it's a set-up job so the mods don't have to deal with a flood of "are we there yet" posts tomorrow.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if it 'accidentally' didn't come back on line until the servers are up and running.

Cynical? Me? ;)

Greetings commanders,

There probably will be a little bit of change-shock when the forums come back online, as many forums will be in different locations or slightly renamed. We've spent a couple months deciding what forums should end up at their new destinations. No threads are being pruned/deleted during this downtime.

Question, Is there a general channel? I couldn't find it. Or is it BY DESIGN not using a general channel? cause I can dig that.

Hating it so far, Brett. Probably going to result in less people bothering with it. Hope the 2.4 content is better than the weird and unnecessary changes to the forum.

Brett, you need a Sticky at the top of many of the new categories to explain what they are supposed to be.

For example, "Modes of Elite" .... what is the purpose of that?

"Horizons" - does that serve any useful purpose now there are so many sub-forums?

A short sticky explaining them might help .....

I had a whole post typed out ready to submit on the Dangerous Discussion page when it was closed and linked to here.... guess I'll sorta condense what I was gonna say:

I hate the change, as do many. Sure some will get over it but these changes feel kinda pointless and counter intuitive.

1. Exploration didn't need it's own area. Sorry but that's a fact, so few make any major or unique discoveries and those were usually in the Screenies thread to show off.

2. PvP sorta makes sense to make it's own area but let's be real, who is going to use it? The only place to get attention for PvP is the front page / main area otherwise what's the point of showing off swag skills?

3. Why is there an Aliens section? Because it's better to talk about that in the main front page aka Dangerous Discussion. Now all important Canonn info is under the Aliens thread that's another pointless click away instead of in the most commonplace area.

4. Too many sub forums now, enough said there.

5. Sorta relevant but I used to (still sorta do) admin over on a MH forum, the name isn't needed as it's mostly dead now but we used to be THE place to go for info before MH went mainstream and reddit took over. The head admin over time made pointless changes to layout, categories, and forum colors to the point that no one uses the site anymore, even with more MH games coming out than ever before, all our diehard vets hate the place and it's layout and thus we barely get any traffic. Everyone hated the changes except the head admin. To this day the site still looks obnoxious to use. Also look over at Blizzard, they just do what they want without asking the community anymore and look where it's gotten them, their own "fans" hate them with a passion because of too many pointless changes. Don't become Blizzard, Frontier.

I'm not the only one who feels this way. What you guys call "organization" looks like a giant cluttered mess now of pointless sub topics and dividing the community to make it a chore to bother looking at any forum. Especially when your workload is going to be cut out for you as you KNOW everyone will just keep using Dangerous Discussion (aka main area) as they always have, so what you think is nice and organized is now an endless chore of having to move threads because let's be honest, only a handful are gonna bother. Spoilers for Thargoid stuff are gonna end up there and seen before you have a chance to move them, the latest PvP videos and gankfests are going to end up there (cause what's the point if no one notices your pro ganking or pvp skills?), and people are still going to post their epic screenshots from exploration (the few who are actually out there in the black). Nothing has changed except what many of us will perceive as more mess than before.

I get it, you guys wanted to try something new, but who exactly did you run it by or ask before just changing things up? And I'm not trying to come off as a troll although I'm sure one of the volunteer mods will be more than happy to see this as some sort of attack against yall instead of criticism pointing out things that are disliked like the other threads that have been locked and deleted already. I'm just really disappointed with these changes, what was once a single click away from the Dangerous Discussion bookmark is now a bunch of backtracking in the forum to get anywhere to read anything of worth.

Consider undoing or revising your changes, I mean yeah it's your site, but honestly who gave the okay to do this? It really is too tedious to navigate anywhere now.

2 months: Design by Committee, Brett? Everyone wanted their say, so it had to be included somewhere?

I'm willing to give it a go, and I might get used to focusing on some of the thread titles that see regular traffic, but it means investing more mental energy, so it won't be a comfortable experience, I'm afraid.

The subscribed threads thing is borked. I did make a post in the forum feedback section, but going to put it here too. Just in case

You must be new here. Exploration has always had its own area and DEFINITELY needs one. You obviously have no idea what exploration community is all about..

On the topic..

I was really expecting a whole new forum software, something good like Xenforo as it would go nicely with xenomorphs and xenophobes.. :D

I must have never noticed it, all the fun exploration stuff always made the top 15 topics under Dangerous Discussion =O made for an easy read (I really like the screenies thread, lots of great sights!).

There is over 100 players who joined the 1 year Dead Ends Circumnavigation Expedition that's starting in a few weeks. Maybe you should join?

Thanks for the changes, Brett. I love that there are now a PvP and modes sub-forums (fora?), it'll mean Discussion has a lot less threads to ignore :)

I recall a long while ago, it was mentioned about linking your forum account to your game account. Is that still on the cards?

Liking the new layout!
Will take a little bit of getting used to; but I think it'll work.

Edit: "Subscribed Threads with New Posts:" isn't removing read items.

The dynamic view of "Unsubscribe/Subscribe to this thread" is turned off temporarily (today into tomorrow only) due to the impending 2.4 Thargoids release. It's a feature that is a bit resource intensive, especially when the forums get extremely busy. Unless I am missing something here?

But, but, I just got used to where everything is!

Good news is that I don't foresee the need to mass-move forums about for a few years.

Previously, so many forums were jumbled to places that really didn't belong, or simply had threads that wound up in Dangerous Discussion, but fell off the list rapidly.

Modes of Elite = Open, Solo, Group discussions. Probably could be named "The GOS & BGS forum" however! :p
