[SAS] The "Sidey Appreciation Society"

good. Yesterday I got a bit of money and now my fist cute sidey,

"Old Catlady"

has the best FSD, better thrusters...almost better everything. But I took out the RV hangar because that is so heavy it reduced the max jump from ~17 to 13...
and.. I think when I want to get to sagA with her I ant to not have to jump million jumps.. My boyfriend told me to go to betelgeuze, so I thought about doing that and without hangar its 37 jumps, with its 58... the difference is massive.
*sigh*

the time difference in the non-engineered class of the buckyball race to sag a* https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...at-do-you-do-when-a-mountain-is-there-Move-it is ~15 hours between the record holding anaconda and the fastest sidewinder. as the sidewinder needed 23 hours, there will have been breaks included.

people are very often overestimating the time spend jumping and scooping (which is down to shiptype and engineering these days), and everything else you do out there exploring.

exampel: my first trip to sag a* took me 3 1/2 weeks one way RL, so approx. 75 hours ingame. i took an AspE, maxed out, so (as having done some races myself and making a rank in the upper regions) probably i spend around 15 hours jumping and scooping - which means, less than 20% of thant trip.

taking a sidey instead of an AspE would have made this trip ~ 15 hours longer, 4 1/2 weeks of gaming instead of 3 1/2, hardly noticeable.

generally you'll visit/explore the same number of systems in the same time in a sidey or conda, with the sidey being faster scanning bodies.

i recommend the eskino nebula after betelgeuze!

The more i fly it,the more i like its versatility.Go anywhere do anything workhorse. What more could anyone want?

soo.. I want to make an explorer- Sidey.. but its small, so I can either bring a Hanger & SRV or I can bring a Repair unit...
but what should I choose?
Both make sense...
hard to decide :/

I took my original Sidewinder /Enterprise/ on the SWE2 Expedition this summer. Maxed out Engineer mods. Took 2A Scoop, 2G SRV, ADS and 1A Shields, the shields I only took for the ship-humping orgies at the meet-ups, otherwise I'd have taken an AFMU for Neutron-jumping. Lightweight HSL and Chaff for extra buttons to press, and a Mining Lance.

Really if you explore in a Sidewinder the 2A FSD with Grade 5 Increased FSD Range mod is essential. Ideally you'd go in a group of Sidewinders, each with a different loadout, some with Fuel Limpets, some with Repair Limpets, some with DSS, some with AFMUs, some with SRVs, some with weapons, etc. so that there's the full range of modules available within the group.

There's an idea. How much interest would there be in a long haul Galactic expedition for Sidewinders only?

PS. I would like to join the Society please. I'm an '84er and an Elite Explorer, and I've taken to exploring in my original Sidewinder for the challenge.

Just having a look in the ED RPG

The Stock Sidewinder is sold as the "Sidewinder Viva!" in the shipyard marketing Brochure

Brilliant!

Interesting Idea
Coordination of time zones would be the key, never been part of one of the organized expeds myself, as I have no regular availability

An engineered Sidey may be 'better' at exploration but it's not absolutely necessary.

A lot of pilots are hung up on jump distance and you can find loads of unexplored systems in the 'inbetween' spaces and not that far from the bubble either. I did the 5k LY requirement for Palin a couple of weeks ago in my un-engineered Sidey, no problem and made 85 million cr doing so.

Of course, if you're looking to go further, faster in a Sidey then engineering is a must do.

Ps I went to Sag A* in an Eagle pre engineers and that only had a 22.9LY jump range. So middle of the Galaxy is possible in a small unengineered ship.

Hi there and welcome to the club... do you have an inara account?

Anybody got to Elite in combat rank yet? I'm presently approaching Deadly and have never bought any ship other than the free Sidewinder (second account). that's 3300 kills so far, which must be about half-way to Elite. So far, I've had two rebuys: One when I got ganked by the cops for opening fire 1/2 a second too soon; once by a fighter, when I took on a Gunship and forgot that they deploy fighters. There was no way I could beat both, especially as the fighter couldn't miss with his rail guns or whatever he had. I was bobbing and weaving all I could with my class 3 dirty drives, but all I got was boom, boom, boom until my ship was gone. How do they manage to hit such a SW once, let alone every time? I also have Elite explorer rank and am planning ahead how to get Elite trader rank, so open to any ideas.

You should try G5 dirty drives - if I remove the SRV hangar, my Sidey does 683 m/s boost and 462 m/s in 4-pips cruise. Even now with the SRV hangar I get 560ish boost and 401 cruise.

Leave those fighters to eat your space dust!

:)

I have them in a Sidewinder in my other account, but it's not easy to get them if you only ever use a Sidewinder. You need 25 modular terminals, so have to run a load of missions. You can only carry 4 at a time, so that's a lot of messing about. Each time I want a break from combat, I go and do a bit more engineering. I feel fairly comfortable with what I have so far, except I could do with a faster charge for the power distributor. I picked up the firmware for the level 2 from somewhere, , but I need to take time out to get some of the other stuff.

In my other sidewinder, I have grade 5 everything, long-range fixed beam lasers and long-range sensors. I can shoot commanders from about 6km, which is a lot of fun. When they chase after me, I use double chaff and give them a bit of a run around, while I try and last as long as I can until they finally get me. The rebuy is nothing, so I get go straight back after them again. I can never win because it would take all day to get the shields down on a typical PvP ship; however, it's just as much fun losing in PvP as it is winning if you do it right. I guess that makes fun for everyone.

Have you checked out the Enhanced Performance drives that Felicity Farseer sells? Even at stock specs they are still faster than normal A-rated G3 dirties.

My sidey can boost over 500 m/s even with a shield and vehicle hangar equipped; and I am just running them stock.

Yes, I have them in my other Sidewinder, but I forgot about them. Thanks for reminding me.

I do all the engineering unlocks in my Sidewinder, it's the only ship I own. If you think 25 MTs are difficult (and they're not, I did it in less than 2 hours) you should try the 200 landmines for Liz Ryder or, as I just did tonight the 50 Kamitra Cigars for Hera Tani. 7 jumps to Kuwemaki with 6 cigars and 5 jumps back to Kamitra. I could've gone shieldless and squeezed 8 cigars in but didn't want to tempt fate. Still, I got to G5 with her so that's another to tick off the list.

I'm looking forward to the 500 ore mining requirement for Selene Jean.

So far I've unlocked 9 engineers and Lei Cheung is next on the list, only 24 more markets to go. I [heart] my Sidewinder.

I reckon I probably should put my hand up for this little club as well. :)

Back in the sidey after a 'soft' reset and having a blast pootling around and just enjoying being a space pilot again!

Well I've done the required 50 markets for Lei Cheung and delivered 20t of gold to him so far but I've had to quit for the night due to alcohol excess and not trusting myself to avoid face planting a station.

I'm now halfway to unlocking all the engineers but unfortunately it gets harder from here on in. I'm not a combat pilot, I'm not interested in having any rank with any super power, they're all as corrupt as each other, so the second half is gonna take some time.

I think that Selene Jean is going to prove the most difficult so I'll probably put that off for as long as I can.

On the plus side I'm still having fun flying around in my Sidey and meandering my way through the bubble. With 600 rebuys I'm pretty set should my wine and/or cider enhanced play style cause a problem... and it will... eventually.

Yep, life is good when you fly a Sidewinder. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Hello CMDR Madrax573,

Welcome to the SAS! As you can see from the overall activity on this thread the SAS is more a statement of a livestyle than an active community, but I think that perfeclyt fits with how Elite : Dangerous is being played by most commanders.

Given your remark I don't think you will live up to my usual sign-off, but you'll get it anyway :).

Fly safe,
CMDR Jermus Karlsen
