Woes of the Elite Dangerous VR Commander

First off this is not a jibe at anyone who has developed apps for ED in the past. I have tried a lot of them and none of them seem to be able to do the trick.

I am currently running a Oculus Rift CV1. The problem I am having is that in order to play Elite Dangerous and do anything accept flying, it requires constantly taking your headset on and off during game play.

There are no tools, information boards, or anything in the game. Everything from the latest discovery, to finding out the closest station with a plasma accelerator require the use of third party sites. Everything that the third party sites are doing should be done inside the game.

Since I wear glasses, I have to re adjust everything so as to not smudge my glasses each time I put the headset back on. It becomes super tedious and breaks all sense of playing in a living game.

I have tried all iterations of app injection software to have access to those tools in game. The problem is they are not natively supported by FDEV and they use more resources then they are worth. Not to mention some of the ways you interface with a couple of them are locked to the use of the xbox pad and I dont use one when playing.

FDEV need to write in a native frame that will allow you to see your desktop while playing the game in VR or they need to add all of those tools in game. At the very least FDEV needs to make a native plugin that allows one or several of the most popular browsers the ability to open screen in game.

I find myself playing less and less, because I know that within the first few minutes of starting the game, I will need to take my headset off and get information off of the Internet. Information that should be in the game already. FDEV does everything so well with VR accept for this. Its the flagship experience for all VR IMHO. The game as a whole including non VR playing would benefit from an in game fully functioning browser and or maybe access to the game forums on screen.

I know its not a world ending problem, but its just so tedious to play the game when you know you will be taking your headset off 2 or 3 times within 30 minutes in order to see information that should be in the game.

Does anyone know if they ever plan on adding this or something Similar? I have tried everything there is to use including V and none of them are worth the system resource cost as well as the interface issues.

I haven't heard any gossip about FDEV adding anything like that. I think you're preaching to the choir here, though. We would all love the perfect solution.

Have you tried switching to Big Screen Beta whilst wearing the rift? I use a voice attack command to open and focus Big Screen so I can see my desktop. I then have a second command that closes big screen and re-focuses ED. Doing this I can see my desktop without taking the HMD off.

Doing it this way means Big screen does not uses resources in the background whilst you are playing (as the program is not open).

That I have not done. I do have Big Screen, but it is kind of RAM heavy. I only have 8 GB of RAM for the Mobo and 11gb on my card. For some reason ED defaults to doing calculations that should be done on the GPU through the processor, So it uses the smaller amount of RAM to hold that data.

Also does the Big screen required you to run steam? I thought it did and I dont like using steam unless I have to when playing ED.

This sounds interesting, can you link a tutorial on setting this up?
I run Elite thru steam, is Big picture available there? I have it on oculus. I could run elite via oculus as well I think...

This post explains it. It works well, I just decided personally I liked the integration of V. It looks like Big Screen is available on Steam, although the process to get it set up might be different than the post above. To make it work from Oculus Home, you have to launch Big Screen from OH but use the native launcher or ED, since only one app can run at a time from OH. Not sure if this behavior is different in Steam. Report back!

So the way I got this to work was to launch ED via ED Profiler. ED Profiler was pointed at a steam install of the game but I think others have got it to work from the standard FDEV install. If I launch ED from Oculus home Big screen wont open.

Once I am in ED in VR I open Big Screen Beta via voice attack by getting it to run the steam install of BSB. Once the program is run (I add a 3 sec delay) the voice attack command focuses BSB.

Once I am done a second command closes BSB and focuses ED.

Here is an older thread where someone did something similar...

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/366970-Rift-Swapping-between-BigScreen-and-Elite

I found that leaving BSB running and just re-focusing meant BSB used a lot of CPU resources. Opening and closing BSB prevents this.

Good luck. Let me know if it works and if you have problems I can try and explain with more details when I am at my PC.

If only our ships computers were updated with some kind of galactic knowledge base. It is disheartening when the headset has to come off in order to find what engineer does what upgrade. That information should really be in the ships computer.

Flimley

Thinking about it you could probably do this without Steam. If you run ED from the FDEV launcher and then run Big screen from Oculus Home that will probably work. As someone else said you can’t run two VR applications from Oculus Home.

when ? Cause it work fine now, and u can control it with touch...

I use a HOTAS keyboard and mouse. Already have enough things in front of me that I cant see. The touch controllers will get in the way. The only way V will be viable is if it can be fully controlled with mouse/keyboard.

OP. Agreed.

Though this doesn't solve the issue with lack of in-game database/snapshot of modules sold at space stations

Here's looking forward to some nice QoL improvements in 3.0+!

On the vive I would use steamVR desktop mode. Does oculus have something like that or can you use steamVR desktop mode with the rift?

You can, but you will use up a ton of resources. ED doesnt use near enough of a GPUs resources. It offloads way way too many calculations to the CPU via the system RAM than it should. I have ran Elite Dangerous in VR and did a graph of the resource usage. The largest spike of the DDRx ram on the card was 6gb with 4gb avg and GPU core usage had a 60% spike and a 40% avg. usage. The rest was dumped onto the CPU and system Ram. CPU would peg out at 95% 70%avg usage and system RAM at 6gb 4gb avg. The card is set up for quality usage and has no power throttling or energy saving features running. The game has full access to the whole card.

Since i have a vive i dont know if the steamvr (with advanced settings addon) desktop can be displayed on a Rift, but...

If it can, it is very usable once you resize it to 1.2m wide and have it pop up 60cm from your face, instead of huge and on the far side of the room.

How:
Steam\steamapps\common\OpenVR\tools\content\panorama\dashboardlayout.json

The changes i made to dashboardlayout.json are as follows: "distance": 2.0, changed to "distance": 0.6, and "dashboard_offset": [ 0.0, -0.7, 0.0 ], changed to "dashboard_offset": [ 0.0, -0.3, 0.0 ],

Distance is obvious, how far away steam displays.
Offset is the display position relative to the hmd when pressing the menu button to show it.

This makes the steam UI hard to use since it shows up so close to your face, to get around this i lean forward in my seat when pressing the menu button.

After this i go into steamvr advanced settings > utilities i think, go to steamvr desktop size (slider at the bottom) and pull it down to 1.2m instead of the default 3m.

There isnt a way to save desktop size for now so i have to do change that for every session but its just a couple of clicks and worth it for its usability.
(might be a value to be changed in a different file but the dev for advanced settings didnt know)

Now the desktop is very readable, i use the kb/m like normal for desktop use, works fine for ingame menus too.

Is that set in stone or can FD change that should they want to. Does it mean a 8 core processor for eg would work way better than a 4 core of the same speed
