FX17: No space legs and no atmospheric planets

What makes you think it's gonna be free?

I haven't heard them say these updates will be free.

You heard Sandro say the word "Feature" right?

In ED, Features historically cost real world money.

he's actually right: all the new 2018 stuff is free for Horizons owners. Its insane, but I'll take it!

After the main streaming this is the conclusion, there are a few upcoming features that are good but not enough, at least for me. They showed a roadmap until Q4 of 2018 and in the incoming features there were no mention to space legs, atmospheric planets and other features promised by FDev. I have the feeling that FDev refuse to compete. It seems like they have accepted the second place behind Star Citizen.

Star Citizen may well take the lead here (eventually), but it has to become a game first. And (yes I do own it) that doesn't look like it's going to take place anytime soon.

Chief

FDev have repeatedly said that Legs and Atmos were not coming soon. Any expectations you may have had were clearly misplaced in the first place.
This. As much as I'd like some hint that this is in the pipeline it has been made very clear that this is not going to be a feature for a while yet.

I would have loved some news on atmospheric planets but reading between the lines it sounds like FDev have sat down and after a long hard look at things decided that the current implementation of the planetary tech needs a second pass. As such the announced overhaul (new lighting model, new particle system) sounds like an investment that will lead toward that eventual goal. Given that we are still in the dark about the gameplay goals of atmospherics I'm happy to wait for them to get this right. There is also the possibility that we'll hear more next year as work progresses.

I'm actually happy their not throwing in spacelegs or atmospheric landings. It really shows that they're going to really focus on making the core gameplay better, which this game desperately needs more than another new, half implemented feature. Great choice IMO FDev. also, people have been screaming about the core mechanics since season 1, it's about time it really got adressed.

I'd be very careful about what your saying and how your interpreting the event.

Believe it when you see it.

We've all "seen" things announced in the past and they've turned out to be lemons.

Cough , power play, cough Multicrew.....

Just sayin!

But in keeping with the theme of you and so many others around here, other features NOT introduced at FX17 include: tiny SLFs that fit inside normal SLFs called Inceptions, melee weapons, and cockpit cheerleaders.
We don't get an Ender's Game ripoff that never actually appears either. BOO!

No paid content means no big features also. Another year with no 3.0 means there won't be any 3.0 ever. Do you really think that Horizon is paying for 3 years of updates and another year, let's say, for the next big update? The game looks to be basically in maintenance mode...

Its not the impression I get although I will be very disappointed if atmospheric planets are never delivered.

I got as far as your thread title.

Anybody, anybody at all, who thought frakking space legs were going to be announced today is delusional. We have been told again and again, most recently THIS WEEK on THIS FORUM that any such gameplay is a long way away. What does it actually take to break through the carapace of some people's wish-fulfillment fantasies and make them accept reality?

Oh my days, I just read your last sentence. I'm off to change my pants.

While I agree that waiting till what looks like 2019 for any sign of atmospheric landing or walking around is pretty dodgy, you have to accept that ED is always going to be second place to a game that has over 163 million dollars worth of funding, and is going to take more than 5 years to get out of alpha.

Wow, did I just stick up for ED?

No way!

Seriously? You think that SC is in the lead? Dude...!:O

SC just looks like its desperately flailing around and playing catch up to the latest thing that caught Chris Roberts's eye this week.

For that 163 mil and counting what they've produced so far is a joke.

I guess that means you'll not be posting on the forums or playing anymore. I mean anything else would logically be hypocritical. Sorry to see you go.

What? Very likely Cmdrs will be first able to engage in meaningful clan gameplay with their own carriers and dedicated missions for groups. The game already has the mighty BGS.

I wouldn't want them to announce or even hint at these things until they are very close to done with them. You're talking about two additional game modes, essentially, that have to be layered into the existing game. One of them has to have enough variation that it's not like visiting the same planet. The other has to account for outside ships, physics, and collisions with other players that can be in your ship. It's a headache. The fact you mentioned SC is amusing, because they have not yet solved these problems and they've been selling pictures of ships for years.

While I agree it's taking a long time, I think after alpha 3.0 comes out before Xmas, you might be eating your words.

Time will tell.

Just saw the show.

well ...

not a complete disappointment, But also not what I hoped for. :(

For me, caring mainly about a more interesting universe to explore, this means waiting for spring 2018 until they redo/improve color maps for planets and almost a full year for more realistic landscapes (something I hoped they would achieve during 2017).

I don't care about free updates. I would purchase another full price fee, if they would finally give us more planet types to land on. But anyway, I also understand that making the game itself more interesting for everybody has to be a primary goal.

Wait, a published playable game is second place to a endless tech demo that is the KING of promises and sells ships for hundreds of real pounds?

Some of you haters are just so funny. Please, go play your tech demo, and please leave these forums as well.
