The ship lineup is stale

New ships is always nice.

I would like to see more mid-sized ships, more "pythons", more "AspX's", more "Clippers", basically more ships that people would actually use, not more pre-nerfed variants.

I think there's room for a few ship classes between the Hauler and the Asp. Right now everything between the Cobra and the Asp is pretty substandard and not very attractive. The Cobra IV and Type 6 are both pretty unimpressive ships, and the Keelback is fun, but rather blocky and not exactly a joy to fly. The Diamondback is a specialized explorer.

Some Zorgon-Peterson offerings that are basically larger versions of the Hauler, up to the size where they're competing with the Keelback, would be a nice addition to the game IMHO. We need some honest to goodness lower level trading vessels to bridge the gap between the Hauler and the other freighters that are already out there. The Cobra IV can serve that niche to an extent, but it's not optimized for it, and IIRC, not everyone can buy a Cobra IV because of some sort of founder rewards .

Slightly overgrown versions of the Hauler and Adder, which could hold 48 and 36 tons with shielding and light weaponry, and came in at the 3-500,000 price range, would be good additions to the early game in ED, especially if they had ZP's usually-generous jump range optimization.

The ship lineup is stale because most of the ships in the game are low level ships. The other sizeable portion is locked behind the fed/imp rank grind. It also doesn't help that there are so many rehashed versions of ships (Viper mk4, cobra mk4, FDS/FAS/FGS).

I am not a programmer but with FD's resources I find this difficult to believe.

I'm no developer either.
But I've dabbled in 3d modelling (fyi, i sucked. Lol), and there's an awful lot to just that portion of development.
Plus loads either end, like just coming up with a concept can take a little while, then obviously modelling, texturing, animation, on both the ship, and interior, asset placement, then all the stat balancing against the other ships. And probably loads more I don't even know about.

But I'm sure they can do it, but it's not as easy as I think some people imagine it.

I'm not saying I don't want new ships, btw.
New ones would be awesome. :)

But how much dev time would you say is acceptable for 1 new ship? And is that more important than other content or gameplay elements?

MechWarrior Online adds new mechs quite often. It has like 50~ or something.
Shame it only has 11~ maps. Lol
Opposite problem!

Contant delivery of new models was never in the official plans.
They announced up to 30 playable ships. We got (correct me) currently 31 and Type-10 Defender
is anounced. So everything is fine with the plans.

to fill the shipyards by regular schedule I won't commit to.
Nevertheless filling up the lineup gaps of the manufacturerrs would be nice to come over time.
Deriving from that 2 ships in 3 months is the goal to achieve is simply wrong because desinging
a ship that looks good, works and is balanced into the game is an awful bunch of work.

Miklos

I'd agree, except FDev have conveniently skipped that "balance them" step.

How about the Diamondback Explorer?

Also, OP, if you want a new ship every month, Star Citizen might be of more interest to you.
Took one to Colonia. Never again. That fuel scoop causes was too much pain to me to ever make that ship viable for any sort of extended trips.

If anything there are too many ships. With the ever escalating credit earning potential since the game's launch, the whole progression system is broken and the majority of ships are unnecessary. Who needs an Adder or Hauler when you can easily go straight from sidewinder to Cobra? And everyone constantly insists that they be able to do everything everywhere all the time *right now*, so there's no place for specialized ships like the Beluga, because (contrary to original plans), every ship can fit 1st Class Cabins, and Luxury cabins are pointless. What purpose does the T series, apart from maybe the T7, fill at this point in time?

You want variety - that's what ship kits are for.

P.S. Frontier please start adding ship kit pieces to NPC ships, preferably using a procedure algorithm that makes sense (e.g. Put raider spikes on pirate vessels, etc)

the majority of ships are unnecessary.

This depends on what you mean by "necessary" though, doesn't it. In my view, a large ecosystem of different ships, including old, obsolete, odd ones, is necessary for immersion. It makes the game universe seem more alive. I actually wish FDev would add a few NPC-only freighters (meaning, don't bother to model the internals) just to flesh out the galaxy a bit more.

Dont know about every month, but for sure we need at least another ship for PVP, right now the PVP scene is hevily dominated by FDL and FAS, and a clipper once in a while. We a need something that is a shield tank but faster than the FDL with a bit less fire power.

I could have sworn they said in the live expo video there was going to be a lot more ships and they only showed a couple and then there was a glimpse of another one or 2 as well, Pretty sure I heard them say there was more than what they showed us. Has no one here watched the expo vid?
