Oculus Rift Arriving Today

Just enjoy the experience and don't get too hung up on graphics settings, sde, godrays, blurry, twinkling, and etc. I should say amazing, mind-blowing, experiences. Anyway, if you're like most of us, the better image on a 2D monitor doesn't compare favorably and after a short time you won't miss your extra pixels at all. If you have a low attention span, ymmv; I'm old so I can do things for hours in the Rift w/o having to watch TV or Netflix or browse forums ...

Of course, I still want higher resolution, higher FOV, and etc., but I'm sure I'll wait at least 2 years, probably more, for a full upgrade. I'll probably need to get some Lasik too.

You've taken your first step into a larger world, OP. Congratulations!!! Once you get a feel for it, you'll wonder how you ever played ED without VR. It truly is the best way to experience this game.

Some fun places to experience once you get it all set up: Mitterand Hollow in the Epsilon Indi system, any Unknown Site in the Pleiades Nebula, any planetary ring, and of course Betelgeuse 2. The sense of scale and depth perception really change things.

Couldn't hook it up tonight. My Inateck PCIe to USB3 card didn't arrive, so will have to wait till tomorrow!
I have to get a couple myself. One for my spare pc, as im setting up my spare pc in a empty bedroom with 2 or 3 sensors so i can do standing up while playing VR games. But im also getting another 2 sensors for the loungeroom to setup my main pc so i can play VR games sitting down. The extra sensors, etc just saves me setting up and moving from room to room all the time. The only thing i will need to move, is the headset :)
My spare pc dont have any USB 3 ports at all lol.
My main pc is down to 2 usb 2 ports left over, as 8 of 10 ports are now occupied, by warthog stick, throttle and pedals, kb/m, headphones, VR head set, sensors,& a gamepad.

Newb here with VR as well. About a month into it now i think.
I have just noticed that myself, few things appear to be a tad blurry, no matter how you set your headset in vr. For the most part though, everything looks great.

So after much drama I got the Inateck USB 3.0 card working, hooked up the Rift and got it configured. A couple of take aways:

1. The tiny space I've arranged for my gaming setup isn't big enough and will need rearranging.
2. Power supply kept conking out. I mean in a big way. Did my research and found that a CorsairCX750M is waayy underpowered for running my 980Ti and an Oculus Rift. Happy though, because this fixes a long running issue I've had with BSODs and inexplicable shutdowns.
3. Managed to play Elite for about ten minutes in VR. Loaded me up straight into my Type-9 cockpit and OMG. I was giggling like a mad man as I just stared about at the cockpit.

So tomorrow I'm popping into Maplins to get a replacement PSU: A Corsair RM850X which looks like it will do the trick based on my research.

Fingers crossed, but so far this has been utterly mind blowing, even after all the hard work to set it up.

So happy for you getting your first taste of VR! Reminds me of my first time, when I was giggling like a lunatic...

Your PSU issue might be a good excuse to upgrade to a 1080! They do consume less power and all, donchaknow... ;-)

I believe there must be something wrong with your PSU. 750W is more than enough. My max system power draw is 430W with an overclocked CPU and GPU (1080TI) and 650W PSU works for me. More doesn't hurt of course...

Enjoy your time in VR. The first couple of days are just so jaw dropping :)

Hmm. haven't had that issue with my 980ti and the 750w psu.
Could try dropping one of the cameras down to a usb 2 connection, should help it work.
then again going big on a psu is never bad.
even though by my calculations I shouldn't exceed 500w with my rig, I plopped a full 1000w EVGA psu in it.
Headroom is good when it comes to psu's. Usually doesn't cost much more than a slightly smaller one.

Anyhoo.
I have vr now for little over a year now.
At least 1500 hours in elite plus a bunch of other games.

I still get the nice "WOOAAH, Dude!" moments, often when swooping in through the mail slot or breaking off a rdice and rounding around a settlement tower etc.

I have also starting to get into project cars 2, also have a g29 wheel.
And earlier tonight I was practically in a formula 1 car doing 300kph on an utterly black nurburgring.
Whiteknuckling the wheel that was wanting to twist me off the course I hoped to god was the road..

Hey it was an 8 minute lap around the long version of the track.
I'm still grinning.

My brand new Oculus Rift is arriving today and I wanted to shout it from the rooftops! So excited right now :D

Can't wait to get this thing hooked up tonight and try out Elite: Dangerous.

Ive been a Elite Dangerous VR user since DK2...... I actually CAN NOT play Elite without a HMD now.

Nobody mentions how much better your aiming, tracking of targets etc is in game with (Good) VR.
Its like...you can look at the cockpit or joystick...or your feet and think...ok thats 4 feet away....thats 1 foot away.
Depth perception just makes everything so much more natural ingame.

Docking becomes a religious experience in VR.
Dogfights make you hold your breath in VR.
The adrenaline pumps so much harder in VR.

Surely it cant be THAT good.....ok ok....just you wait ;)

Just make sure everyone buys VR now before someone dies for real whilst in the Rift or Vive...... "We will not make/sell anymore until this has been fully investigated' etc.
Long term affects are no where near studied enough....and I simply couldnt care lol [noob]

Still to this day the first time I saw the inside of a station In Elite Dangerous VR........ the best gaming 'OMG!' moment ever...........

(PS: Do not play a horror game first with your VR) L M A O

If you have instant shutdowns without warning the psu is indeed the main suspect. 750W should be plenty (even a bit overkill) for any single gpu system though.

Thanks! That must have been such a buzz kill. Hope you get yours soon!

Got my replacement today, nicely timed with the new lower price for the rift :p Ah well, can't win every time! At least they sent me the full retail bundle again so I now have a third sensor and an extra XBOX controller!

If you follow the setup you should be ok. When u finish setting it up and it says "not enough room" or whatever it is saying, just click "Skip". It will pop up a message asking "Are you sure" or to that affect, click "Yes, i understand"
I do this in my empty bedroom as the sensors are about 6 to 8 meters apart from each other. And i have read going by Oculus that they can be up to 10 meters apart. But as long as i follow their setup, which i do, i should be fine. So, try it and see what happens.
But they do recommend at least 6 feet distance between sensors.

Worth. The. Wait.

I will never play Elite without VR ever again. The sense of scale. The... everything! Taking a short break to avoid getting sick, but soon heading back in again! A little tip though, run through the tutorial first, don't fly your most expensive ship out of the docking bay and destroy it because you haven't got the control bindings or view quite right ;)

I got the Corsair RM850X, installed it, and took photos to make sure I knew exactly what was plugged in where. Booted successfully, ran some checks on Windows and then started the Rift and loaded Air car. It seemed to work a treat, but then....

the computer shut itself down again. With the old PSU, I used to be able to boot back in, no problems. This time, however, it wouldn't turn back on. I turned off the power switch, waited a few seconds, then tried again. It turned on, but then I noticed traces of smoke come out of the top and I turned it off immediately...

Oh crap, what have I done?? Any suggestions?
