If I sold every ship I had, I could get a Python...

I am a huge lover of the Python, mine has made my cmdr the rich guy he is today and will always fight it's corner BUT I would not sell my other ships to get one. I saved up doing passenger missions with my AspX, saved until I had about 200mil in the bank so I had enough to buy, outfit and have plenty of rebuys. Within days I had that 200mil (and more) back thanks to the Python.

I have only ever sold 2 of my ships, the T6 I had to get the money to buy my AspX (I hated the T6!) and an FDL I bought once I reached Elite in trade and had access to Jameson, I got giddy and bought and A rated it, flew around for about 30 mins, realised it didn't suit me or my play style and sold it again.

I still have my Sidey, Cobra MKIII, AspX, Python etc.

Some numbers above are overdoing it. My Python's total value is 97Mcr, after giving it everything I wanted including A-rated thrusters and mining gear (15% discount on the hull). Rebuy is 4.9Mcr. And as you equip a ship you don't quite pay the full price because you sell the modules it came as standard with.

I still advise "no" to selling all other ships to get a Python though.

Here it is:-

This is how "Lost everything, back in sidey" stories start.
If you can't afford to fit it and then loose it (preferably multiple times), you can't afford to fly it.
Since you appear to have to scrape the bottom just to make the purchase, all i can say is....don't.
And being almost certain you will do it anyway, don't start another "Lost everything, back in sidey" story should the worst happen ? ;)

you buy one of the best combat ships in the game for a bunch of cr just to mine? what?!?!?!?!?!

A variety of reasons:

I like mining.
It's not just for mining, I have >190 cargo capacity for delivery missions and trading.
Collector limpets are great for collecting materials from USSs etc. as well as for mining.
I'm collecting all the iconic 1980s Elite ships. I don't want the new-fangled things with wings and fins so much.
I don't care much for combat.

... with a couple million left over for some basic mining gear.

Go for it? Don't? Thoughts?

I did exactly that. I had a Vulture and a FDS and I wanted the Python. Liqidated my assets to buy a D-rated Python, barely enough to cover 1 rebuy, but I had a Python!

I eventually came to my senses, sold the Python and got back in my FDS and A-rated it. Bought a Python some time later when I could afford to fit it properly.

Don't do it.

Still hanging out in my AspX and my Cobra MK3. I'd love to get a bigger ship, but not at the cost of my smaller ships.
I currently have

2 Cobra MK3.
One full A Class, the other is more expendable due to reduced equipment.

Asp Scout.
Got it one night after drinking too much Stella.

Asp X.
Next to the Cobra my favorite ship so far.

Dolphin.
Thought it would be a good idea after sipping half a bottle Jack Daniels.
Yeah it was fun, did the passengers like the ride. Hell no... [hotas]:D

If you find yourself so short on funds that you need to sell your ships to buy one large one than you probably shouldn't buy the large one just yet. If your looking for a cool way to make money than get a T6 or something similar with big internals and good jumprange, and run some passenger missions, specifically the multi-stop adventure ones that pay 1 - 3 million credits per job, its a fun way to earn lots of cash and you get to see cool sights you've never seen before. If your not into passenger missions and would like to mine, then fit a T6 for mining, it does a pretty good job at it for how small it is (so long as you know what you're doing). Here's a build of what I use for a mining T6. ( https://eddp.co/u/R3z8rxCx ). Don't rush to the large ships just yet commander, they'll always be waiting for ya, Elite is like a drive through the woods, scenic, good to take your time and coast to your destination.

If you make a single complete run of Ram Tah's Alien Ruins mission you'll be able to buy a Python and outfit it quite nicely, keep all you current ships and still make a profit.
111m credits is still good credits.

I meant on top of your current assets.
Classic as in: seen to many threads that refer to not flying without rebuys.
Its better to have a bigger bank account before flying stuff you cant really afford to lose as others have stated aswell.

Right !?!

?

I sold an A rated FDL and an A rated AspX to buy a mostly A rated Python (which I have since fully upgraded), with rebuy of course. I just kept hold of my 50LY DBX and my Imperial Eagle. I don't regret doing that at all - I hadn't engineered the FDL or Asp so I figured I could always buy them back in the future. I set about engineering the Python and now it's a beast that I'm happy to have as my main mission runner. Did loads of bounty hunting in it too. For a dedicated combat ship, I ended up buying and engineering an FAS instead of another FDL.

If you can afford a Python with a decent loadout I'd say go for it. But personally I wouldn't want to be stuck in an E rated Python, or E rated anything, as my only ship.

That seems very underfitted. Mine is more than twice that. I suppose it depends on what you fit it for.

What are you spending on your python. I pretty much A-rated mine apart from the armour (getting heavy upgrade on the current armour) and it cost me under 1 million.

Hello. How do you do.

Go for it if you have enough creds for 3 pyhton rebuys.

If you dont wait a little longer.

Never fly what you cant afford to lose.

Love mining? check out hip 118213 and hip 4005/

No, be patient and wait until you can comfortably afford it, and keep your ships.

Make sure to have a few rebuys. If you don't want to do combat in it and you know how to high wake it doesn't need to be A-rated. A good FSD is important though.

Parallel to OPs question, I had been thinking of selling my Python and FAS to buy an Anaconda, but after seeing most peoples reactions it may be better to wait? Glad somebody else has the same thoughts I do OP :D

Relative though, I enjoy my Python. I barely have it upgraded, and use it mainly for mining and hauling. She's good for that, but I've seen people use them for far better purposes after they've been upgraded and engineered. A solid multipurpose!!

I have a python but it doesn't get used. OK at most things but doesn't excel at any of them. If it was a footballer it'd be James Milner

At the time, I did the same. The Python is your first real earner, a big jump in cargo capacity and with it you can earn your way into the next big jump, the Anaconda and with one of those, you can buy your other ship(s) back in no time. o7
