Why is the new Krait so big?

I'm just relieved I'm not the only one who thought it was much bigger than the original.

It seems like a "combat Keelback" to me, for all the god that'll be. [where is it]

A ship with a SLF, more cargo than a Viper III and more maneuverable than a Keelback and I'm all in... Sounds like a great mission runner to me!

And minis...

Mini should just change its name now...small range rover or something.

Mini's aren't even Mini's anymore. They're BMW rejects in drag.

*sigh*
Ah those were the days.... When British cars were British. Made by some bloke called Frank at the Leyland plant and were 100% guaranteed to start rusting before they got to the end of the production line........ Oh God!! I'm having Allegro flashbacks!!!!!!

Zorgon Peterson should license the Mamba and make it a Sidewinder sized racing fighter. While not equal in firepower or tank to the Imperial Courier, it beats it in speed and maneuverability.

Ok, the Krait portion of this discussion has now ended, and we'll be focusing on a more meaningful topic for the remainder of the thread.

The Mamba!

I've never played nor heard of Elite anything prior to playing this game last year, but a few weeks ago I was reading a book about snakes to my youngest, and after reading about the black mamba, my mind drifted off to imagining the ship version of The Black Mamba.

Not sure if it existed in prior versions/Elite universe, but if not it should be:
- small, slender, and have a coffin shaped cockpit/body
- fastest non-SLF than anything else in the game and extreemly agile
- extreemly deadly hardpoint capacity. I'm thinking like, two huge and two large hardpoints
- weak armor, but large enough power supply and generator capacity, would be able to rely on rapid biweaves for defense

Basically, and big kids version of the Imperial Aegies SLF. Stuipd fast and agile, but no armor. The fastest and highest damage per shot than almost every other ship.

It would be the ultimate for experienced combat pilots, but less experienced pilots would likely die easily.

Who's with me!

THe thing about the smaller ships is they very quickly become useless, which is a shame since it would be cool if they werent made so redundant by ones that were later put into the game. Bar a change to the flight model I wonder if reducing their heat output, and therefore their signature becoming fuzzy on the scanner at shorter ranges, might make them a more attractive proposition even for veteran players. Potentially this could mean fliying in a wing of smaller ships (i.e. eagles, vipers, etc) could be effective in skilled players hands. And perhaps also lead to missions where using a smaller ship is of an advantage.

While I wouldn't be opposed to smaller ships being more stealthy than they are now by reducing the range at which they present as unresolved contacts (though some other low emissions object may need tuning as well), I don't have any problem with there being ships that are simply outclassed.

The issue comes back to the economy, or lack thereof. We have an ever increasing money supply, with payouts increasing rapidly...yet all prices are fixed. I spent hundreds of hours in a Viper Mk III, largely because it was the best combat vessel I could afford at the time and for the first year the game was out, Cobra and Asps were far an away the most popular ship. Now, if I check almost any starport in the bubble, I see that the Anaconda is likely one of them most popular CMDR vessels, because it takes less time to get one now than it took to get a Cobra Mk III in 2015.

I think that is a myth. small short range light modded ships can kick some serious a*s, they especially shine in combat zones and their extremely low ship transfer cost makes them more than viable.

that said i would not mind if the krait was as fragile as a eagle with a similar flight model, just with a little bit more bite (4-5 light hardpoints) and some more utility slots.

Because the old Krait was really old, small and a bit rubbish - but cheap. Replaced by the Mamba and the Sidewinder.

The Krait mk.II needs to fill a new niche, and it looks like it is.

THe problem is that another small ship would be redundant before they put it in the game. IMO the Krait should be in the FDL, FAS, or Clipper category, otherwise it will be an overnight novelty.

If it was the same size or smaller then the sidewinder, virtually nobody would use it. All that work for nothing. Making it a medium sized is more likely for it to used. It could be my preferred ship depending on internals.

I don't agree at all - while I have a FDl and a Conda I find myself often flying my trustee Viper (I also know I am not the only one who does that).Variation is a nice thing to have. I had hoped for the Krait to be Eagle maneuverable and Viper fast with only 2 small hardpoints...
Compared to the older titles EDs ship linup is decidetly underwhelming.

On the other hand I will welcome a mid sized allrounder with SLF capacity.

I know it's a rather derided car, but I loved my Allegro back in the 80s. I think I had it for 6-ish years and went through 3 engines. But the engines were dirt cheap at the junk yard and could be changed in the parking lot. That Allegro outlasted my Morris Minors, Mercury LN7, Jaguar XJ6 and Daimler Sovereign that I had in the same time frame.

Yes.... And some folks loved big hair..... Some even loved Bros !!!!!

I was too young to drive back then, but a couple of my mates' dads had them. Suffice to say me and my mates would rather walk than get a lift....... It just killed the "cool" factor.....Very important to teenage heavy metal wannabees!!

A Viper is still somewhat bigger then a sidewinder. I suspect the Krait is exactly what you describe, a SLF capable mid weight all rounder. Looks good too. If it has an okay jump range and internals, it could become my ship of choice.

I like the medium sized ships. Anything from the Cobra and up, but on the odd occasion I still get my trusty old sidewinder and eagle out of the hanger.

I think they should have kept it small, made it a bit heavier and slower than a sidewinder with less jump range, but a bit more armour and cargo and given newbies their first choice of ships with comparison stats to start.

Us oldies expect a Krait to be a Krait. It was old and dated back then but still a useful ship in its class. With the legacy ships I don't think we need a full reworking of what they are, they should offer differences from what already exists for the class which would reflect that we don't all play or fly the same.

I'm sure Adam Woods spoke about it in the latest ED vid...& definitely mentioned it was a small ship! :O

Oooh! Feline strategically placed amongst the pigeons!
