2017 Best *looking* games

I’ve searched for the best 4K game several times recently and I get an odd mix of results, but none I’m really happy with. I’m curious what everyone’s thoughts are, purely for the purpose of visual impressiveness.
I would submit Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice as the best I’ve seen. Some clipping issues are really the only way I can tell these aren’t actors somehow doing what I’ve told them. The draw distance isn’t... great, but the effects I’ve seen so far do look amazing and as I mentioned character detail is the best I’ve ever seen bar-none.

A nice little plus is that the story is original and unique and a little heartbreaking if you’ve ever known anyone that suffers that way.

Senua is looking great I agree, the details on the character are impressive. Few days ago I played new Star Wars Battlefront II and I must say it was the best graphics I have ever seen next to Battlefield 1. Frostbite engine plus Dice design team and I was literally playing "the movie" on my screen. Also same as other Frostbite base games the performance was flawless.

I was going to nominate Hellblade if it hadn't been mentioned :) A fantastic looking game, fantastic all round to be honest.

Playing the recently released Middle Earth game. I'm using a 980ti playing on high and it's very pretty indeed. There is an ultra HD pack you can download for it and it probably looks nicer again with that applied.

Fun fact re: Senua's Sacrifice - the actress who plays Senua in all the mo-cap is also Ninja Theory's video editor in her day job. A woman of many talents.

ehhh old Skyrim with some mods and ReShade injection still beats it!

I have the old Skyrim and I tried loading up at the workshop but honestly it all looked better in pictures than playing it.

I didn’t beta Star Wars Battlefront II when I had the chance a week ago, I’ll be kicking myself for that for a while I suspect.

What's the point of good looking when the gameplay is shyte? Anyway my game of 2017 (I go by date of purchase - not release) is Alien Isolation (for "looks and atmo") and XCom2 (for gameplay - LW2 mod).

Middle-earth: Shadow of War is pretty violent and bloody, same Senua’s Sacrifice. Both are PG18 I`m sure.

depends on the version. The german version is pretty tame and loses lots of its "feel" and impact due to the restrictions made by german law on computer games /sigh. I m sure some animations have been cut as well same as in Sleeping Dogs. Due to the presentation and gore + animations in the "correct" version I totally agree with the 18 tho.

And agree 100% with this. Regardless how incredible the graphics, you get used to them pretty quickly and soon dont see all the nice things anymore. All you are left with then is the gameplay and I rather play a "bland" looking game that holds my interest for dozens if not hundreds of hours then a short-living "interactive movie". Todays market of course holds games which look fantastic AND offer great gameplay, just have to find em :)

Didn't know that about games in Germany. Do developers have to "edit" out gory bits and make different animations for their "stabby killy" bits then?

I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve recommended Dwarf Fortress, but it doesn’t negate the fact that visuals are powerful for us squishy humans. If they weren’t, games wouldn’t be going in that direction. They can’t save a bad game, but they can push a good game into greatness.

Maybe it’s like MTBFritz says, and it’s only the first few minutes and then it blends together... but how many times have you heard that first impressions are important?

That's why I put up Alien Isolation there. The art design, visuals and perspective (along with sounds, yes) capture the spirit of the original very well and make it a fine experience. I haven't played any Dishonoured game, but the visuals look interesting, not because it's fancy graphics, but rather it seems to transport the art design quite well. Whereas when I look at Destiny, it does look good, but I don't really know what to make of the art - it just doesn't come together for me.

No, but they run the risk of getting only approval for marketing to adults. The only thing that really land you on the index are e.g. totally overblown violence for the sake of it. Stuff on the index must not be traded publicly, but it is still legal. Then there is stuff that is outright illegal e.g. symbols and insignia - this would just get confiscated and destroyed and pulled out of shops, of course.

Battlefront 2 looks really good. Can't speak for the gameplay of course but that's not what this thread is about is it.
