Pimax Owners/Backers Convince me!

I am a converted ardent OR owner, long story short, i got one in April, was disappointing, put it on eBay, but retracted the sale, now you can't get me out of it. I still use the Monitor in my second account (Exploring) and when ever i need to do a lot of keyboard work etc.

I am reading on here now about this Pimax stuff and how it is the 'Near' Future in VR.

So, as the subject title says Convince me ?

or

Doubter's, Tell me that OR ver 2 is going to be better?

The next version of anything is always going to be better. Depends on when it’s shipping. They just announced the go with no announcements of a new rift afaik

I’m in for the 5k bundle for pimax. I saw it in San Fran recently and was impressed enough to keep my backing. The 200 fov was the game changer for me.

There is an ask that for the next round finished units to demo with elite. Hopefully that’ll happen.

I think we have at least another year left of the life cycle on the cv1.

I'm honestly fine with the SDE on the cv1 but more FOV would be a total game changer so I'm very tempted by the 8k with eye tracking module.

Not sure I'm ready to back though.
spent that budget already.

I have upped my bid to the 8k after seeing this vid of ED in the 8K. This was with the custom CLPL screens and the blacks and contrast looks fine to me:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iisLwROA8o

Have that huge field of view with virtually zero screen door effect is what has swung it for me.

Thank for the YT link, but that short vid does not show this 'fence sitting' OR user enough. Maybe i don't know enough about what i am looking at to take this short vid for what it is, and i am the first to admit 'I know Nothing', (as manuel would say in Fawlty Towers) about VR, only that the OR resolution could be improved. I am thinking 8K (4k per eye) is like looking at a high res Monitor?????

Guess i need to try see if i can get my head inside one of these 8K Pimax sets, or wait until they become mainstream and lots of user reports are available. From my perspective at the moment, the people who have invested in the pimax 5 and 8K are singing it's praises (As you would expect if you forked out several hundreds of hard earned cash), and the people who are dissing it are the people who have not invested in it and won't.

Me? I am asking to be educated, i am asking to be persuaded, or should i hang out there for CV2?

I get the tech thing, after all i am in IT sales, so understand todays top of the range CPU, GPU, SSD, M.2, Monitor is tomorrows ebay material, so i know things move on and upwards at an alarming rate.

Thanks anyhows guys and girls for answering so far!

The only other thing to do is look up the kickstarter pages and see what the people who have used it say. They have pretty much all been positive with a few minor issues which we have been assured will be addressed before the units get sent out.

So I have the Pimax 4K with NoloVR. I used to have the HDK2 which has the same resolution as OR (although apparently less screen door due to some film on the screen that also made it dimmer) long story short I've never tried OR but the screen door on the HDK 2 ruined it for me.

I got the pimax 4k and can not seeany screen door effect anywhere it looks unreal I can read text just about aswell as I can on my monitor (only a 1080p monitor I will add)

The downsides.

You get ghosting the headset does some clever wizadary to upscale 2.5K to 4K (since 4K at 60FPS is difficult for most PC's) also you can't run 4K at the optimal 90FPS (HDMI ports just won't let you do it at the moment). So to get round these things is basically shows 1 screen at a time so that it tricks your eyes into seeing 120FPS but only ever display 1 screen at 60fps (It's a lot more technical than that and I've probably got it wrong but it sounded convincing in my head)

Anyway ghosting is far less of a game breaker to me personally than screen door effect is so I would absolutely recommend. I can run the game without super sampling and still get a crystal clear image running the game on VR ultra it does push my system to the limit (I7 6700k and 1080TI) but it is awesome!!!

I'm looking forward to the 8K and will be getting once it's been out a while (I got the HDK 2 before it was consumer and that was a pain to get working properly so won't get stung again!)

stay away from the Pimax and the new Rift by all means. If you don't want to do your own research ur just not worth it ;D

Are you trolling? there's all this testimony on the new pimax, including some people here in this very forum and then you come along simply saying to stay away!
what the hell gives?

Not sure how to interpret you post as it really is not clear or clever, so hey, i'll just ignore it. I have researched until my brain is frazzled, and that is the problem i am now confused, so hence asking on this forum for ED or just general Pimax experience? If you can't be civil in your post, may i suggest you keep your opinions to yourself!

As i said, you're now officially ignored!

Just a quick question..., I'm wondering how current PC hardware will stand up to this VR headset ?
Regarding all those extra pixels really
Flimley

Hmm, yes another part of the equation Flimley, but as i work in IT, that part of it i can get my head round and i am fortunate to be able to latest CPU & GPU, as i just order them through my work. But any increase at one end will demand an increase at t'other end. Its the way IT in general works.

That is probably the best we have, but I do not believe for a second those testimonials aren't highly curated and cherry picked to present a positive feedback.

It's like looking at the back of the cornflakes box, for reasons not to eat cornflakes.
We just have to wait is all.

I guess you are right TorTorden. Patience has never been top of my qualities.... HaHa!

BTW, there is absolutely no reason NOT to eat Cornflakes, with Ice Cold full fat milk!

Agreed. I also checked out the Elite Dangerous video they posted too, nice location they chose to film in... deep space with nothing going on. Oddly the Arizonia Sunshine video also showed no actually gameplay or any of the titles more demanding scenes. It didn't fill me with confidence at all.

I'm still waiting on some real impartial reviews of this device running Elite Dangerous in some resource intensive areas and keeping my fingers crossed that a high FOV HMD is viable at present.

I decided not to back the 5k becuase I haven't got a Vive with the lighthouses. It was my impression that Pimax has no tracking system and relies on third party lighthouse from HTC Vive.

Got a Rift CV1 and it does not use the tracking from that so....

For me personally I just want a little higher resolution, no more FOV becuase I need to save on GPU power (only got a Titan Pascal.... yes it does fine but I'd rather have a smooth game than a very high FOV). Wish Rift was just some hundred lines more rez and it would be fine for me *sigh*.
