This community is 'different'

I'd love to see more moderation against the name-calling. Anyone calling others white knights, whiners, special snowflakes, trolls, haters, etc could be given a warning and a time-out if they keep it up. It would make things less contentious and toxic around here.

As someone who is mostly critical of the state of the game I constantly get called a "whiner" or a "special snowflake". I'm told to leave and go play something else, or accused of "probably never even played the game". To be quite honest, it's making me even less inclined to want to engage with this game and this community.

I have been accused of not playing the game as well, which is pretty funny. Just because I didn't agree with them about something.

I see your point OP. However, there are quite a few jaded players out there that fell for FD's shall we say "Disney like" advertising and unrealistic dev forcasts and feel that ED HAS great potential but is hampered for whatever reason by FD's lack-lustre record on content (I should add NEW and ENGAGING content, a galaxy that looks good is great BUT if its an empty one whats the point?). I have seen MANY posts on here from the defenders making fun of players who are not so happy, often telling them to leave. So. you see there are two ways to look at this picture. Not every gamers has experience in game design or coding and to tell people that they should provide "constructive" critisism is a joke in itself when you are faced with a tirade of snarky and often infantile rants from the WK brigade. You cannot blame people for being jaded, thats what you get for TRYING to bring out a game before its ready, you have to play catch up adding game mechanics WHILE still trying tyo design and impliment new cdontent that will keep players happy, which is like being a one armed juggler :)

The thing is, the white knight brigade you are talking about doesn't exist. It's a myth. According to those using the word, a white knight would be someone who thinks the game is perfect as it is. But everyone in this community agrees that it isn't! There isn't a single person saying "FDEV, your game is perfect. Please stop creating new content now, because since it already is perfect, everything you do from now on will make it worse". That doesn't happen. These people do not exist. However, there are people who disagree with certain suggestions, some people don't want to turn the game into Eve for example. Or make it PvP focused. Or they simply disagree with priorities: "FDEV, you absolutely must add space legs now, otherwise SC will take all your players away". No, don't add space legs now, add it when it's ready! And there are also people who simply disagree with the insulting and rude tone some people use. And there are people who just can't see the same half baked suggestions anymore "Simply disable friendly fire...". No! Don't do that! It's stupid and wouldn't work!
White Knights don't exist, that's a fact. And if you believe you have spotted one, send me a PM, tell me who it is and I'll guarantee you, I'll find something that he doesn't like about the game or that he wants in the future.

Black Knights however do exist. There are people in this community that are around since the removal of Offline mode, they threatened to sue Frontier and probably got told by their lawyers that this would be a stupid idea, and since that day they just hate FDEV, the forums and the community. These people join the forum every 3 months and tell everyone how the game will fail, that FDEV are evil liers, etc.

Anyway, the reason people are 'faced with a tirade of snarky and often infantile rants from the WK brigade' is because they are unable to provide constructive criticism. You are saying they can't provide constructive criticism because of the 'white knights', I say it's the other way around, your perceived whie knights exist because people just absolutely suck at making good arguments and constructive posts.

I agree. Everyone can see that the game need improving in areas, it just that they have different priorities and different ideas on what will make it better.

Yes, my priorities / current wishes are:
- NPC crew and wings
- persistent NPCs
- complete rework of Engineers and real crafting
- more tools to support your own personal storyline like a journal
- better missions, USS, RES, CZ and POI mechanics

That stuff is really important to me. I can understand however how a PvP focused player or a explorer isn't interested in these things at all.

(just to prove that I am not a fanboy :D)

White knight doesn't mean you think the game is perfect. It just means you can't see a critical post go by that you don't agree with without telling the person how wrong they are.

You can't post a criticism in this forum without 20 people jumping on you to tell you how your opinion is stupid, or how you couldn't do any better as a game designer, or how there are other things you can do in the game, or how you probably just hate the game and don't even play, or how you need to "get good", etc.

FDEV are grown-ups. They can sift through the nonsense and decide what criticisms are valid or not. They don't need you doing it for them. The only thing "white kighting" does is make people defensive and start arguments and contribute to toxicity. (I hate the term white knight and I apologize for using it. I didn't know how to make my point clear without it in this case.)

Yes, my priorities / current wishes are:
I am an explorer at heart, but I would love most of those changes.

- NPC crew and wings
Agreed. It would also give me a reason to fly one of the big three/four. NPC management would be great as well.

- persistent NPCs
100%. Would be great, I would also put in some kind of NPC/PC comms system in as well.

- complete rework of Engineers and real crafting
I am fine with the engineers as they are, but it wouldn't bother me if they where changed.

- more tools to support your own personal storyline like a journal
Agreed. Looks like we may be getting something like this with the codex.

- better missions, USS, RES, CZ and POI mechanics
Again, 100% agree. A better USS and POI mechanic would be good for explorers too.

That stuff is really important to me. I can understand however how a PvP focused player or a explorer isn't interested in these things at all.

I would also include a complete rework of Powerplay. The idea is great, but the execution is very poor. If they can get the execution in line with the idea, that would be great.

You are completely wrong. ;)

Pretty much sums what I want too. I have to think it's still on the cards.... Pleeaaase!

lol, I thought about adding a rework of powerplay to that list ;)
Personally I think Power Play should expand the ways how we can interact with the BGS and manipulate star systems instead of being a cardbox game that got glued on top of it.

Gotta disagree with ya on that definition... A White Knight, be it for a game, a person, a football team, a movie fan or whatever, isn't somebody who thinks something is perfect. A White Knight is someone who cruises around looking for dragons to slay and challenge anyone they perceive is threatening their beloved. They'll jump into any conversation or forum thread and raise their sword to beat back the attack - whether or not it's justified or the thing they are trying to protect wants it or needs it.

White Knighting isn't about denying imperfection, it's about preserving the honor of your beloved.

And there is plenty of that in the ED forums, along with the unrepentant haters who have to jump into any thread, positive or negative, to spread their views. Yin and Yang. Flip sides of the same coin.

And some of them are in this very thread. :D

And yet a few pages ago someone who was complaining about white knights told me that this is exactly what the term means... Anyway, if someone disagrees with someone else I can't see anything bad about it. We are on a discussion board after all.

Because 20 people have 20 different opinions. I can't post a positive thread either without having 20 people telling me how wrong I am.

Yes, FDEV can (and will) ignore you when you are unable to post your opinion in a reasonable manner. I don't think they need me for doing it. But if you are lobbying for a certain change and I like a particular mechanic the way it is, how about you just let me voice my opinion too, without insulting me?
BTW, I am not talking about you personally ;)

If that is what white knighting is, then I really haven't seen that either. I have been called a white knight on a number of occasions, but have never done that. It looks like to me that some have a very different opinion on what a white knight is. Most people who use that term in a derogatory manner do it just because someone has a difference of opinion to their own.

Or am I being a white knight now.

As said above, that's your definition. I just looked for the posts where someone said that all White Knights think the game would be perfect, turned out these posts got deleted...
Anyway, what you are describing doesn't happen on this forum either.

The main problem is that there are too many people here that would even cheer and applause when Frontier would offer a turd on a stick as dashboard deco in the shop.

You mean that there are too many people here who treat everything they offer as if it is that right? ;)

Two sides to every coin. I know the game isn't perfect, but I also know that whining about it won't change that.

Have you started clanking yet? Or had a sudden knee-injury involving a projectile shot from a bow? If not, then you are just fine.
