I'm surprised by the majority support for atmo planets first. There have been many discussions on this forum about the potential gameplay of space legs, but comparatively little about atmo planets. What will being able to land on atmo planets really bring to the table gameplay-wise? Sure, it's 'cool', but what else?
If the goal is gameplay, to me space legs win simply on account of the potential there. If the goal is more Asps in front of things, then yeah.... atmo planets.![]()

I only want to see space legs when they can be combined with some sweet space FPS. I think being able to steal someone's ship after sending the pilot into the ether will be a lot of fun![]()
I mean...if you spend time thinking about it I'm pretty sure you can think of lots to do with atmospheric planets without exiting your ship. Just flying around would be a hell of a thing, let alone seeing the *tens of billions* of people inhabiting many of these worlds inside the Bubble, and the cities & starports they'll be living in. I wager some CMDRs might get lost for weeks just flying around Earth. The idea of surfing on Water Worlds appeals to me, too.
Legs by a landslide. So many features in this game have needed to be gimped / compromised already because of lack of legs. SLFs, multicrew, AFMUs, hull repair limpets... So many wasted opportunities that will need to be redesigned after legs, or just never have their potential realized.

Because the primary draw of Elite is flying spaceships, and atmos offer a whole new flight model. It will add a unique experience rather than 'add another game'. It will immediateky add it, and doesnt need a huge amount of dev time to add gameplay which spacelegs does.
One way or another, in the end Elite is the life of a pilot in the galaxy and it would be a tremendous experience to live it as the whole including atmo and space legs. David BRABEN seems to envisionned it that way. Patience and time wil tell. But i do agree with you atmo seems to be the fast way to implement than legs.
