Would You Pay to have a System You Could Name?

No, it's special, has been done for charity events raising hundreds/thousands of pounds in the process and as above it'd very quickly get abused unless the price tag was very high at which point people may feel they have a "right" to have the silly names in if they are paying...
I'd bet within 60 minutes we would have a Raxxla system :p

That having been said I won a "name a system" as part of the Frontier Expo Buckyball race. I have honestly no idea what to call the system and what system to pick, i'm working on a shortlist but I think I am a ways away from a decision.
Anyway, could be a biased source because of that but I can honestly say before the Expo I had a similar opinion. Take it for what you will, full disclosure by me here :)

Isn't that why there's a planet called Stapled Peacock Flesh?

Frankly if I took over Frontier my first order of business would be nuking that planet from existence. :D

Are you prepared to reimburse Mr S. P. Flesh his 3,000 monies, pretty sure they'd question the legality of removing something from the game that he paid a lot of money for. :p
New tourist beacon: "The Stapled Peacock Flesh Event" .. :/

I'd have the Thargoids do it. Nothing in his purchase I suspect said anything about Alien destruction. :p

*This is all a joke, obviously

I would call my system Trumpton. With the planetary bodies (yes, you've guessed it) Hugh, Pugh, Barney, McGrew, Cuthbert, dibble and Grubb.

I am somehow more irritated with amateurish-written "player-submitted POIs" - I mean, it was bad enough to trek 7000Ly, but it was topped by reading POI beacon story written (from the looks of it) by some high-school kid.

Given that those POIs wouldn't even exist at all if they weren't player submitted, because it's players that find those POIs in the first place, I give those a little bit of leeway.

Fair one! After all, it could indeed have been a high-school kid that wrote one.

I disagree. I like seeing astronomical catalogue names on my route planner, such as HIP 7456.

I don't really like HIP names and similar for inhabited planets. People would give their stars something with a bit more pizazz and distinctiveness.

Plus its annoying when you're trying to remember whether its HIP 7456 or HIP7426 that you were going to sell fish to

What? If you are not aware, FD has tool allowing to insta-"jump" into any system in the galaxy. So its super-easy for them to browse it for these interesting-looking system - and put a professionally-written story for them.

Also FD can just *create* any kind of system and POI they like. They can override procedural-random layout for any system/body/parameter.

If you mean these amateur-made stories would not exist without players submitting them - well, I can live with that ;)

I don't mind seeing them. But boy do I hate typing them into the search field. Or trying to remember them. Anyway they wouldn't go away because not everyone would rename everything that they discovered. Plus at least in my imaginary fantasy scenario, renaming rights would only apply to systems discovered after the option went on offer. So it would mostly be outer worlds that have not yet been discovered.

Well to be honest I have no issue with it.

If people have enough money to pay for it, why not?
Just don't ask for anything more than a name.

;)

You truly believe that FD is manually inspecting 4 billion procedurally generated systems to check for cool places to set as tourist POIs? :D

There is a reason why they asked explorers to submit POIs for cool places that they discovered on their galaxy.

And it's not like you have to take those missions anyway...

When you sign up for the game, there should be a slot in your account for a system name.

When you die, your account is closed and a random letter system somewhere is renamed accordingly.

No Thanks, but on that note, I would LOVE to know why one of the systems near Colonia is now called Pennsylvania.....

Oh, and I am an American, our currency is Monopoly money made from unicorn whispers and the crushed souls of small business owners.

Your currency is made of... What?

[blah]

I truly beleive that
a) they could just input a parameters query (e.g. find two planets colliding) and simple script will find such system if it does exist in ten minutes or so
b) they could just make the damn system straight away without having to roll the dice gazillion of times

I totally understand the reason why they've asked explorers - because they thought its cute and "engaging the community" to give people just some more meaning of spending tons of time manually and slowly observing these dice rolls :)

These missions are needed for some very vital engineer unlocks - I would gladly pass on them if I'd have a choice in that matter. But I will obviously never do them again (not unless there will be a good overhaul) - once a time it was enough, thanks.

I guess I don't have to play the damn game, thats right - but there is lot of good stuff here too, so...

No, and I can't see FD doing that without at least slapping down some pretty severe content restrictions.

Not the sort of thing you can automate, because people are

1: scum
and
2: very good at finding ways to creatively insert bad content into a name everyone gets to see from now until the end of eternity.

so this would be a manual process, and the revenue would quickly disappear into the staffing required to do it effectively,
