Taking the plunge for a Space Cow (T-9)

I've thought about buying one, but now, I think I'm going to see what how the T-10 turns out first.

Yeah that makes sense. I thought about that. But I can always trade in the T-9 for the T-10 if it is better for my needs. I’ll take a small hit but its manageable.

True. It's the engineering that sucks to replace, especially if stuff doesn't swap directly, but you can always throw it in storage.

Just want to pop lm and say I just love hauling in the T9 not much to say here as you already got Drivers advice, and I follow his advice regarding setup, they are always top notch.

The Type-9 is awesome! It combines the beautiful cockpit of the Asp Explorer with 496T of cargo. And yeah the shieldless build is working out fine so far. Lots and lots of armor and point defence. Worst scrape I’ve had so far is 90kCr damage from an FDL and a Python. For some reason the FSD wind-up was really slow and they got to take a lot of shots at me but I still came out ahead on that run by a lot. Thanks for the help and advice CMDR’s. Now I can’t wait for the next trade CG!

just for fun!

The type 9 is anything but.

My advise: go back to your anaconda. 2nd option: get ready to die, a lot.

"armed build just in case I get interdicted by small fry" Yeah, you will NEVER get interdicted by a 'small fry', the system scales your opponents based on your ship, a type 9 will spawn pythons almost exclusively to hunt you down.
I had the misfortune of using a type 9 before NPC's told you how much cargo they wanted, I got interdicted, NPC said drop cargo, I drop 5 tons, he says "That's not enough", I drop 5 more tons, 5 seconds later my shields are gone, 10 seconds after that my ship is exploding.
I have been interdicted in my Anaconda as well, but that goes a whole other direction, they say drop cargo, I do a 180, launch fighter, and they're melting in seconds.
I've also noted that I get interdicted FAR less when in an Anaconda than a type 9. Anaconda being about once per five to ten jumps, type 9 being almost every jump.

How can you die 'a lot' in a T9 or any other ship for that matter?

NPC pirates are extremely slow to react. By the time you have been hauled out of SC and they have decided that they want to shoot at you, your FSD has charged up and you can be high waking out of Dodge. It used to be a lot harder, but the threaten timer was extended in the 2.1.05 patch.

In a T9, don't engage in combat unless you know what you are doing. When interdicted, just submit and high wake out.

Any suggestions on improving this build will be most welcome!

In terms of your overall build, the 7A thrusters are probably not worth the price on the Type 9, I just use a grade 3 dirty drive tune on 7D thrusters. It depends on how aggressively you fly your T9 but generally it's not going to be outmaneuvering anything and I can think of a better use for the 50 million credits I save by using 7D thrusters instead.

From a defensive perspective, the Type 9 really does benefit from an SLF bay, even if it only gives you time to distract an NPC while you jump the ship away. The T9 will always have a low shield strength (even with a 6A shield generator) so I use a 5A shield generator, military alloys and a class 6 dual SLF (which means I can continually replace SLFs as needed and almost always have a new SLF available even if they are destroyed quickly). Given how strong the T9's hull is now the military alloys are a good investment even if they cost another 38 million credits more than the reinforced alloys. I also carry a class 3 SCB to keep the shields up against heavily armed NPCs (at least long enough to jump away). My build only has room for 400 tons of cargo but the improved survivability from the military alloys and SLFs are worth the reduced jump range and extra 64 tons of cargo I would otherwise have.

The phenomenon of slow FSD charge is called "mass-locking" and is a function of relative "Mass Lock Factors" which each ship has as a specified attribute. For example, the MLF of a Type-9 is 16. Ships with a lower MLF will slow down your charge by a considerable amount, ships with a higher MLF will slow it down a huge amount. This is also relative to distance however, ships must stay close to you to maximise the mass-lock effect.

Worth noting that while charging the FSD to jump to another system, as opposed to Supercruise, MLF does not count, you will always charge in 10s. This is why most people advise "high-waking" (jumping to another system) as the preferable tactic for the Type 9, due to it's low MLF. Congrats on making a SC jump in this situation, that's not easy!

Just took the plunge on a T9 today. It's an interesting vessel and having low rated core components (except for the FSD of course) makes for a fun challenge. I think I will have to spend properly and put some decent stuff in (the 1A capacitor is just false economy :)).

Also been interdicted a couple of times, which I managed to evade. I think I will suck with her (Bestla she's been christened) for a while.

Currently enroute to Colonia, then out to Sag A and onto Beagle Point in my trusty Type 9 - (53% Fsd Eng Mod) 27.63ly jump range and DDrive Tier 3 she flies nice, great views and being I have all the time in the world, going to be a fun run this time out into the void.

Love the ship, it has a special place in my fleet and always shall do.

I have an A-rated Type 9, which I mostly use for trade CGs in Solo. I've ditched the shields, which adds some excitement back into the game and significantly increases my cargo capacity. I've gotten gud at avoiding PvE interdiction and I've been in the top 10% of the last few CGs I've participated in.

I like the Lakon "fishbowl" cockpit a lot, so I prefer the T9 over the Anaconda. The other nice thing is when I switch back to my AspX, it's so much fun to fly a nimble ship again. The variation helps to keep ED interesting for me.

*THAT* is what gets you killed. You get mass locked before your FSD has time to charge. Yes that's right, the type 9 gets mass locked by a python!

If you high wake, you do not get mass locked. Try it; you will realise that escaping interdictions is actually too easy.

And then you never get to your destination because you keep getting interdicted, and high waking. Time to take your fingers out of your ears and stop screaming, just face facts, the type 9 sucks.

Type 9 is the only ship I've sold (Excluding a few cheap ships I essentially rented to get somewhere). Its sort of interesting to fly for a little bit, but quickly turns into torture.

I don't actually think it's possible to lose an interdiction in this game anymore. At least against NPC's, tbh I'm happy the way it is now, interdiction difficulty has been swinging back and forth since release, either impossible to evade or ridiculously easy.

@DeathStroke - In a freighter against an experienced CMDR, you highwake, doesn't matter what type of freighter you fly. Against NPC's, you either outfly the interdiction or submit and destroy the aggressor, either way it is a non issue if handled correctly, stop being dramatic.

Or, lose some cargo space for a badass shield, boosters and all, then equip shock mines to slow your opponent down.

Then you can afford to low wake.

@777Driver, I really love your shieldless idea btw. It makes sense if you think abou it. Because the hull on the T-9 is already pretty strong I can just boost that further and then it frees up a larger slot for cargo. I used the two class-4 slots for hull and module protection respectively, but that still leaves me with 496t of cargo space. I also have Selene Jean unlocked so this thing can really hull tank. Thanks for the suggestion on that it works great in PVE/Solo!
