Next combat ship after Cobra III?

o7

So I´ve spent the last week or so outfitting and engineering my Cobra for combat, but have come to the realization that she just won´t make the cut. I can´t get enough shield strength out of her, and she has too few utility mounts for my liking.

What would more experienced players reckon as the next step? (approx 25 mil to spend) and maybe I can bring over some modules since every core internal is A-rated, and most are engineered as well. I´d also like something with three or more hardpoints, so not the Vulture. I had one of those, but never grew to really LOVE it.

Thanks!

You may need to move up to a medium ship to get more shields. The Imperial Courier is small, requires a little Empire Rank, but otherwise is cheap, fast, agile, and a load of fun to fly. However, I fear you may have similar issues with it as you do the Cobra Mk III and Vulture. "It's not the number of hardpoints you have, it's their size that matters." - everyone that likes the Vulture

The internals of the Cobra are pretty much a straight swap in for a Viper MKIV, or a Diamondback Scout. Both are pretty good small combat ships.

They also fit nicely into an Asp Scout. This is an underrated fighting ship, with great agility. the downside is it is a larger target, but it is a medium ship and so slightly more resilient.

You can also put most if the internals into a Keelback, which would let you add a fighter to the arsenal.

Those are the options when trying to retain the modules you have engineered.

I would recommend: Courier>Vulture>FAS

I was skeptical about the vulture when i first got it. But those 2 Large hardpoints and the vultures mobility wull make you the bane of any medium to large pirate ships in RES

Mmm I wouldn't totally discount the Asp E, it does have a lot of hardpoints and utilities, and the right build can be pretty tough. Though I think this question also depends on what type of combat. If you're thinking PvE mainly, then you have a lot more flexibility with what will work (including an Asp, I'd argue), but for PvP mainly, I'd have to echo what others have said here, the vulture is formidable and with engineered powerplant you can fit it with more power hungry stuff.

Achilles7

DBS as a hybrid biweave/hull-tank or Courier if you prefer a shield-tank. ~6-10mil

...or if you want, there is always the crap pilot's combat ship of choice, the vulture for ~16-20mil

I´m going for PvE mainly, my PvP tactic is still the old "turn, boost, jump"

Yeah, the one I had made me a lot of credits on CG´s back on the PS4. However, my love for having at least three different weapons makes it unfit for me. Also, I had so many canopy breaks due to the placement, so I´d rather steer clear just on personal preference, while I do understand the love for the Vulture.

What would be a quick way of making some imp rank? Go out on a "road to riches" and deliver the data to a station under imperial control?

25mil? I know it's already been posted(like a dozen times)so here's another one to support the decision. you can't go wrong with a vulture. Other than its power issue's it's a fine combat ship

Loved the vulture till I got a fdl and never looked back

Road to riches will get you rep, but not rank. That said rep is useful. Turning in the data is a system with a high number of imperial factions to get better/more missions seems to be the preferred method. Then just run missions until you're there. Also given your current wealth and preferences, I think the iCourier may be the one of the few ships that fit.

yeah, it´s rough being picky. Fortunately, I have a Python that´s combat decent, just want something quicker that still packs a bit of ...oomph! and leaves the Python available for more all-round use in and around the bubble.

May just be crazy enough to save up for a FDL, should just be a couple nights on the road to riches, but the iCourier is very tempting...

Haven't flew the courier yet, if you get enhanced thrusters with g5dd on them I bet it's loads of fun

Cobra IV of course!

That may be an interesting choice, if you have access. It has one more hardpoint and all of them have excellent placement (unlike the small ones on Mk3). All modules will swap directly, but it is quite a bit slower and not that much tougher.

I would personally recommend one of the Diamodbacks as they share a lot of module sizes with Cobra but have better hardpoint placement and 4 utilities. Scout is pretty fast with limited internal space, DBX is slower but tougher and more universal, also has large hardpoint for some interesting weapon loadout choices. And you can't beat the jump range of a DBX.
