J. J. Abrams Working At Frontier

Did Frontier recently hire J. J. Abrams, because I seem to be getting a lot more lens flare recently. Sometimes it's downright blinding - as in, I can't see what I'm shooting at. The following video is an example (15 seconds in), but it's not the most extreme example I've seen.

I'm on a PS4 Slim, so maybe this has always been in ED for PC and they just recently added it to the PS4... Regardless, it's too much, IMO. Thoughts?

I sincerely hope JJ Abrams doesn't have an input into the script. I watched all of the Lost series and the convoluted plots, sub-plots and hyper-imaginative sci-fi/eerie/spiritual theme made for very gripping entertainment from week to week, but it all fell apart in the final episode and felt very contrived in the end.

Non-humorous version: are these lens flares new or "improved" since 2.4?

No mention of it in patch notes, could be stealth 'improvement'.

Always thought that lens flare was an amateur move, one made by someone who doesn't understand how lens flare works. If you don't understand how lens flare works, then you probably don't understand why you're using a camera that costs tens of thousands of dollars, and why that camera uses lenses DESIGNED to reduce/eliminate lens flare.

That's how its been on PC with Effects on High and Bloom on since 2.1-ish as far as I know. Stuff like other ship's engine glow are more subdued when Effects are set to Medium or below and Bloom is switched off.

I do remember when ship's engines weren't quite as bright so it is indeed tied to FD making optimisation improvements to their tech.

Lens flare's cool, right?
When used appropriately in terms of scientific accurracy or used artistically for aesthetics but sparringly, sure.

J.J. Abrams however tends to go overboard with the effect because he thinks it's "cool" and therefore should be in every single scene where there is even the faintest of light sources such as a video screen or a small desk lamp. If you watch his first Star Trek reboot film it's a wonder how everyone aboard the Enterprise's bridge isn't stumbling into each other because they've gone flash blind from all the lense flare coming off of every single screen and every single source of light.

looks like the same lens flares we got on PC, maybe they hesitated to add it to consoles since you guys can't edit your config files.
try the medium bloom setting if you don't like it.

btw if you think that is allot you should see my game, i modded the crap out of my bloom cfg + added extra with graphic injectors and it now looks like Riddley scott, Micheal Bay and J.J all made a game together [big grin]

Clean your windows!

I've been asking Frontier for some Windex since day four. My window is dirty and my visor (which I'm not even wearing) is dirty. Oh, and the camera on my selfie-drone is dirty!

I told Frontier that they don't need to simulate dirty glass, because my monitor is dirty, my glasses are dirty, and my eyes are getting old. My glasses also provide more than enough "lens flare" on their own ;)

Dose JJ Works for FD? Hmm... lets see:

jk, those are my ReShade extra flares here :D

anyway, overdone post processing like blur, flare, screen dirt should always be optional imo, way too many games are abusing them, especially horrid motion blur that eats your framerate and makes you sick. Many inde devs are using them in spades to hide poor graphics, or they think its omg so real! :(
But in Elite flares are not that bad imo. What I would tone down by like 80% are bright ships in super cruise, literally blinding haha

Most of the visual artefacts come from simulated lens objects, which actually make sense in this game due to the cockpit screen and helmet. I hope they don´t go to far with that, since I like the rather natural approach they take on ED.

Or perhaps you have never tried wearing glasses that are not clean... :D

Could they at least add an "if" statement to give me visor effects only "if" my CMDR is wearing his / her helmet? The dirty visor annoys me more than the windshield.

Lens flare's cool, right?

It certainly is in 2001, Blade Runner, Close Encounters, E.T. etc...

Dunno, I think lens flare is cool-looking, appropriate and fits the genre. Like in those films, it sells the reality by implying the big fake things you're seeing are interacting with a real lens. It also blends things together nicely to make things feel less computer-graphicsy.

But maybe there could be less of it. Or more of it!
