I am a gimbal scrub.

And I'm proud! Yes I'm hilariously bad in fights, but I don't care.

CMDR Amalthea Winter-Heart, not trying to be the best at anything.

Anyone else not bothered by the knowledge that they'll never be "the best"?

Nope not me, as pointed out in other threads I use a DC, never flown FA off and tend to log into solo. I'm having fun so its all good :)

Edit: I also use gimbals.

Pfft, and I say again, PFFT!

Gimples are for wusses, no skill! Be the alpha Commander that is inside you and brace the no weapon layout like I have. I just fly endless loops around my inadequate prey until the die of laughing
....... ;)

Seriously, I tried fixed, didn't like them and immediately went back to gimbals. I am old, my reflexes aren't what they were and gimbals are in the game. There is only one type of player that puts down anyone who he/she/it thinks is using 'easy-mode' weapons, a child (of any age), and this normally occurs immediately after said child is soundly beaten in combat.

So yes, I am a proud member of the gimbal club :D

I have no expectations to ever be "the best", but I to make a point of trying to do MY best. That said, I usually prefer a mix of weapon mounts on my ship. Gimbles are great for keeping the pressure on and maintaining some amount of DPS, but I like my heavy-hitters (or longer range) weapons fixed. Having a mix means I'm ready for a broader set of situations. I find that at the very least, fitting at least a fixed long-range beam laser into your loadout to be very helpful (and fun).

On a related note, I'm off the opinion that with fixed vs. gimbals, and FA on vs. off, a mixed approach is the strongest. Sure fixed only, FA always off is HARDER, but I'm not convinced that it's necessarily better. Use the right weapon type and flight mode for the right situation, if you ask me.

I'm not here to impress anyone, and besides, I only do combat against NPCs and I don't think I could impress them if I tried. ;)

I use gimbals because to me, they are the best of both worlds: larger firing arc in normal mode, and when a NPC puffs chaff, I can simply unlock the target and use my weps like a fixed mount. That and I'm lazy. :D

Hello Ralph. I often wondered if your avatar represented your RL job. I sit up the front of UK MAGIC and put the frame where it needs to be for the "goats" you've probably spoken to. HaHa.

Back on topic, I'm a gim-baller. Have more fun with them. And since this is a game. Fun is the aim.

Yours Aye

Gimbals?

Turrets are where it's at for the real slackers.[up]

I've got more turrets than Camelot.

People moan about how it's possible to build a turret boat, stick it in a hazRes with a bar of gold in the hold and go and watch TV while your ship makes credits for you.
That's how I test my big ships.
If they can't do that I consider it a fail and it's back to the drawing board.

Seriously, I first realised I had this "problem" when I found myself bolting turrets to a Cobra.

I'm donkey doodoo in combat too, but I actually did get all fixed burst lasers on my FAS and did decently well in a cz.

I'd fail completely against players and have gimbals on everything else, but the FAS with A ratings and a little engineering is just so fast that you can generally still get a good hitrate even with fixed guns.

I pretty much only did it because it reminds me of those old arcade machines with the vector graphs where you should tie fighters or something, actually kinda fun ^^

I have only put turrets on my Corvette: After proving to myself that I could fight with gimbals.

Now if FD would give me huge turreted beams for up top, I'd give serious consideration to your 'test'. :D

Me too. I'm not that good at combat, but it doesn't bother me because it's not my primary reason for playing this game.

I encountered another commander in a CZ the other day. He was in a Corvette, I was in a FDL. He proceeded to wipe the floor with me, while I barely made a dent in his shields. I flew back to base to repair, and had another go. I got his shields down to around 30% before I had to bail out again.

3rd time lucky - he'd changed ships to a Federal Dropship! I sent him packing this time.

No messages were exchanged between us because we both knew what we were doing.

Neither of us were using much in the way of tactics, and we were both using gimbals. But afterwards I thought of half a dozen ways I could improve my combat tactics for next time.

It was fun! :)

Mysterious Cmdr - if you're reading this, thanks for the duel.

I used gimbals for a long time. Now I use fixed weapons almost exclusively. Improving as a pilot is the way I have fun in the game. It doesn't bother me that I'm not the best. I just want to keep getting better :)

I actually started out with fixed, then discovered module targeting and switched to gimballed. For PVE farming, it's better most of the time, especially with ships with widely spaced hardpoints (cobra, clipper). The only ship I use turrets in is my multiplayer dedicated gunship, which has a mixture of beam turrets and fixed multicannons (to give me something to do in case someone decides to try gunning).

I'm a gimbal scrub too. I can't aim for <censored by poster> at anything greater than knife fight range. I do know what to do when someone (NPC or human) throws chaff; close to knife fight range and have a jolly good knife fight with my weapons unlocked so they act as fixed. I can't miss. Unfortunately, they can't miss me either. But hey, you pays your money, you takes your chances.

Gimballed for PvE
Fixed for PvP

I see this a lot, and while that might work for some, for me I've ripped gimballeds off every ship I use, even ones with poor hardpoint placements. For me it's fixed only, if only as a self challenge, everyone else can do what they want but I refuse to touch gimballed weapons these days, that plus landing fixed weapon shots on weapons with travel time such as PA's or railguns or cannons, or module sniping with even pulse lasers, is just so satisfying to feel that personal accomplishment.
