Star Citizen Discussions v7

The difference between the 2014 video and the 2017 one is that in 2014 it was a proof of concept, and in 2017 they actually show they have the technology working and reached their goals as shown in 2014. Its a big difference between the two videos.

I know people feel CIG deserve a free pass because they're doing "stuff that hasn't been done before" but look at it from the point of someone who doesn't care about any of that. All they care about is getting the game they paid for.

If this was EA, or any other publisher, there would be all kinds of hell about the state of the game.
Imagine them taking $160 million upfront in pre-orders, imagine them missing every single announced patch for their alpha, imagine them giving all the false platitudes at E3 while showing off tech demos for content that was never included in the original scope, imagine them selling $850 DLC. Imagine EA fans saying you need to wait another 5 to 6 years for your game.

People would be doing their nut.

Kind of working. It's still more prototype than anything because it's not incorporated into a functioning game, we're not seeing it working with multiplayer etc

EA and other big companies don't reveal that they develop a massive game until its almost close to completion, precisely because they know people are impatient. Look at Mass Effect Andromeda, that when was revealed was already 4 years into production, and took another year to release.

And to be honest no one is forcing you to buy expensive SC packages and ships. It was always mentioned you get access to the full game with no restrictions with the basic Aurora package. If you want to support the company and get more, its your choice, its not a paywall, like the big companies love to do these days with the DLC's.

Sorry, but I disagree. In the same way you could claim the 'sandworm' is working, and the original SM was 'working'. Yet we know they didn't. What you saw was a standalone single-play isolated demo of a module. It is working when it works in the game on your HD. And considering the track record of CIG, which basically consists of tons of amazing videos 'proving it works', of which none of them make it into the PTU, I'd be a bit more skeptical if I were you. Or not, that is your choice of course.

Right, and that full access wil be in 2023, according to your estimate. So its okay to take people's money in 2011, promise a game in 2023, then not deliver 90% of the original promise "because the scope expended" (normally it means you get more, btw) and charge $850 bucks for basebuilding. And you claim its perfectly alright because you can also earn it in game almost a decade after the game was supposed to be launched? Really? A decade? [haha]

Can you explain why they didnt just deliver on their promises and then expend the game? Other than 'they couldn't and now they are stringing us along."? :D Oh, its true noone has to buy those jpegs. But who is gonna fund your additional 5-6 years of development? Santa claus?

Nah it just your Stockholm syndrome.

I still remember seeing a video in 2004 showing the future technology of intelligent AI in Oblivion, with NPC's having their own schedule, and was so excited, but sadly I had to wait for the developers to actually finish the game. I was so sad that I had to wait two more years, since I wanted it right then, when I saw the trailer.

The conclusion is that you have to wait for the developers to complete their vision before being able to enjoy what you see in presentations and trailers. I know that "I want it now" mentality, since I have it too, but let's be reasonable, development takes time to have a complete working game, and you simply have to wait, no matter the game.

Edit: "So its okay to take people's money in 2011, promise a game in 2023, then not deliver 90% of the original promise "because the scope expended"..." Well, weren't there stretch goals? The scope expanded thanks to the backers as well, since it seems they agreed on some point that they wanted a more complex game, knowing it would take more time. And its not like we don't get anything until full release, we are getting updates like 3.0, and hopefully SQ42 soonish.

Not sure why some have so much difficulty with the concept.
Fanatism?

The problem is that we didn't see a bit of the most critical parts yet. There is no indication that they really manage to get the full-immersion AI working to populate the world. How many AI do you need for this planet? Then we know for a fact that net code is a massive problem and there is no indication that this game will be playable with more than 10-15 players on one server - ever. But without these two, most of the vision is pointless, it's just a big single player level with fancy looks but nothing to do.

These updates get delayed by years and then release (it at all) with a dramatically reduced scope. We have seen this with StarMarine. We expect this for 3.0. And there is not life sign of SQ42.

Erm... how do you actually differentiate between the two? Both could be actual working tech or both could be proof of concepts.

We can't take CIGs word for this, they are liberal with the truth as we have seen many times in the past to say the least.

Until it lands in PU, all they are is proof of concepts, regardless of how far on the tech is.

Yes I'm fully aware they don't announce games until they're ready. Congrats on choosing to completely miss the point.

Again completely missing the point. It's nothing to do with being "forced", it's about a company offering DLC that costs $850.

No need to behave like that...

It is fine if you care.
As I said: I do not!

The Arena mode is free for those who own ED.
Are you saying you do not own ED?
Arena mode was added as a bit of a surprise.
It was never mentioned in the kickstarter.
For ED owners it was nothing more than a free extra.
Cool if you want something like that and immaterial if you don't care about it.
My only concern is the wasted dev time on a feature that has nothing to do with ED.

Atleast they use the assets for the main game so not that much wasted.

Yes, let's look at that. A sprawling space epic that took 5 years to publish: SC is barely an alpha after 6 years.

And don't give me that "ramping up" rubbish. The programmers Bioware folded in weren't up to speed with ME:A when they joined the team. The artists Bioware folded in weren't up to speed with ME:A when they joined the team. The PM's Bioware folded in weren't up to speed with ME:A when they joined the team.

Unless you're a drooling imbecile you don't hire people who don't know what they are doing. I've been a consultant who worked internationally: If I can't get my head around a problem 5 timezones away in another language inside of 10 minutes, I don't eat.

Or maybe I don't understand IT?

No, the scope did not extend thanks to the backers. If I order a pizza, I dont want to hear my pizza is delayed by ten years because some other consumer is okay with it. Thats not how you treat people. And your Bethesda comparison is again missing the point: We dont mind the waiting we mind the lying. You dont have to explain the concept of time to us, we are not five years old. The thing is that CIG told us we would have 100 systems in 2014. I have .1 system in 2017. CIG told us AFTER THE SCOPE EXTENDED that we'd have 40 stations and a dozen planets within weeks. That was over a year ago, it is not coming in 3.0 or any 3.x patch so the 'few weeks' became '3+ years'. Again. That is not how Bethesda works, that is how noone works. You should acknowledge that CR was simply lying to you. There is no way anyone mistakes 'six weeks' with 'three years', unless you are so incredibly incompetent you should instantly lose any 'faith' in him.

And I have been hearing the 'we get Sq42 soonish' for four years now as well. Guess how serious I take those claims? And heck, why do you even suppose there is anything good about that game?
