The difference between the 2014 video and the 2017 one is that in 2014 it was a proof of concept, and in 2017 they actually show they have the technology working and reached their goals as shown in 2014. Its a big difference between the two videos.

I know people feel CIG deserve a free pass because they're doing "stuff that hasn't been done before" but look at it from the point of someone who doesn't care about any of that. All they care about is getting the game they paid for.
If this was EA, or any other publisher, there would be all kinds of hell about the state of the game.
Imagine them taking $160 million upfront in pre-orders, imagine them missing every single announced patch for their alpha, imagine them giving all the false platitudes at E3 while showing off tech demos for content that was never included in the original scope, imagine them selling $850 DLC. Imagine EA fans saying you need to wait another 5 to 6 years for your game.

EA and other big companies don't reveal that they develop a massive game until its almost close to completion, precisely because they know people are impatient. Look at Mass Effect Andromeda, that when was revealed was already 4 years into production, and took another year to release.
And to be honest no one is forcing you to buy expensive SC packages and ships. It was always mentioned you get access to the full game with no restrictions with the basic Aurora package. If you want to support the company and get more, its your choice, its not a paywall, like the big companies love to do these days with the DLC's.

Both are proofs of concept.

Sorry, but I disagree. In the same way you could claim the 'sandworm' is working, and the original SM was 'working'. Yet we know they didn't. What you saw was a standalone single-play isolated demo of a module. It is working when it works in the game on your HD. And considering the track record of CIG, which basically consists of tons of amazing videos 'proving it works', of which none of them make it into the PTU, I'd be a bit more skeptical if I were you. Or not, that is your choice of course.
Fanatism? Not sure why some have so much difficulty with the concept.
I still remember seeing a video in 2004 showing the future technology of intelligent AI in Oblivion, with NPC's having their own schedule, and was so excited, but sadly I had to wait for the developers to actually finish the game. I was so sad that I had to wait two more years, since I wanted it right then, when I saw the trailer.
The conclusion is that you have to wait for the developers to complete their vision before being able to enjoy what you see in presentations and trailers. I know that "I want it now" mentality, since I have it too, but let's be reasonable, development takes time to have a complete working game, and you simply have to wait, no matter the game.
Edit: "So its okay to take people's money in 2011, promise a game in 2023, then not deliver 90% of the original promise "because the scope expended"..." Well, weren't there stretch goals? The scope expanded thanks to the backers as well, since it seems they agreed on some point that they wanted a more complex game, knowing it would take more time.

And its not like we don't get anything until full release, we are getting updates like 3.0, and hopefully SQ42 soonish.

No need to behave like that...
It is fine if you care.
As I said: I do not!
The Arena mode is free for those who own ED.
Are you saying you do not own ED?
Arena mode was added as a bit of a surprise.
It was never mentioned in the kickstarter.
For ED owners it was nothing more than a free extra.
Cool if you want something like that and immaterial if you don't care about it.
My only concern is the wasted dev time on a feature that has nothing to do with ED.
