What can I do in the game at the time?

Can I go bounty hunting? Smuggling? PvP? Compared to EVE, what features currently exist and which don't?

I'm looking for side activities. I understand that it's beta though, but are there a lot of side activities in beta?

Thank you for the response.

First of all it isn't a spreadsheet non-real-time game like Eve. It is a FPS real-time persistent universe in which your instance will be network limited to what we hear is a max 32 players because the game play cannot slow down.

Next, you have 55 1:1 scale systems now (out of 400 billion) that you can do all you list above, plus take on contracts/missions for trade and military conflicts and generally faff around exploring the sights. Missions will be built out during Beta to include exploring, salvage, protection gigs etc. with reputation tracking so you get missions that others won't see if they haven't made all the slog you have (more lucrative, more risk, more secret military ops and the like). After the first release the new content like FPS mode and walking on planets will only make the missions get more varied, possibly deeper/more complex and more cool.

Huh?! Is this some sort of joke?! So basically large pvp battles are out of the question, and the MMO just turned into a MO - a glorified CoD in space with 32 players on the map. So if the 32 guys are spread around the galaxy, you're basically playing a single player game while occasionally running past some guy every once in a while.

I need confirmation on this cause this is a deal breaker for me.

Yeah, but what else?

;)

Right now? Look for bugs, try various things, try to break them, report the things you broke and that you see are bugged.

Considering that ED isn't primarily a PvP game I guess large scale PvP battles are out the question.

Also, the online galaxy can host 1000s of players, but in order for the servers / clients to cope you're limited to 32 people around you. The instance is you, not a region of space so as you fly about other players merge with your instance then leave once you're out of range.

There will not be huge EVE spreadsheet style battles in ED ... there will be no time dilated point-n-click battles .. there will instead be you at the helm flying the ship surrounded by up to 31 other players and plenty of NPCs.

I guess that's a "deal breaker" though ;)

No, the instance is a bubble around you that maxes at 32 (PC, unknown if it counts NPC). The Galaxy is populated with all players.

.... and instance bubbles will split when players get too far apart and will merge (subject to available capacity) when they get close enough.

There can be large scale conflict but the result will be an aggregate of all the instances associated with the conflict. But yeah EvE style fleet battles are out.

Also players can only own ships, they cant build stations and such, that's all NPC, although player actions will influence NPC events. So you wont be able to hurt anyone beyond blowing up their ship. I suspect that might be a deal breaker for you too.

This isn't an MMO to begin with. PvP is not the focus of the game. You CAN shoot other players, but the game is not ABOUT shooting other players.

Also, the "32 player" limit is, from what I understand, those that you can see and interact with. There could be 50,000 players online, and even if all of them are in the same place as you, you can see only 32 (unless I am mistaken about this). These 32 won't always be the same people.. it's like "your bubble"... wherever you go, whoever gets into your bubble can see you and you can see them, and a max of 32 people can be in your bubble at the same time.

Think trade build alliances with ncp factions fight destroy explore bounty hunt build a friends group, or join a friends group run high speed missions do seek and destroy mission rescue missions get use to flying small medium and large ships find hidden planets. Look for new discoveries the world is vast and the possibilities are endless most of all try and have FUN.

I have to say, 64 players an instance would be better. I noticed yesterday that my instance felt a bit lacking in atmosphere.

Pretty much yes.

It's not 32 per instance of the entire galaxy, but 32 in your local bubble (but really most people will just hide from PVP players in solo mode).

This is looking to be a very lonely game. Kinda sad that the tone on the forums seems to imply that's a good thing.

A think most players would get bored with solo play very quickly and will play online open multi player, but I really really feel that still only makes it possible if you can not tell the ncp ships from real players in multi play mode.
Until you get close to scan them or are already in combat with them.

And the greifers (not PvPers) have none but themselves to thank for that.

"Why won't people stick around so I can be an anti-social jerk to them?"

As to the 32 player local limit (and I do hope that is raised), it isn't likely a big deal as the size of the environment means that for the most part that will accommodate all of the local players.

Space is big, and a lonely feeling is appropriately part of that.

Caveat Emptor. You should have read what you were getting into. In fact, if you think that what has been said means there are only 32 players 'on the map' then you should go and read the DDFs. Elite is a co-op game with a PVP element. It was never designed to be and never advertised as a PVP battle game.
