I haven't played since 2015 and thinking of starting again, should I and is Horizons worth it?

Thought I'd update the thread.

I bought Horizons a few days after making the thread and been enjoying it a lot thus far, I do like the feeling of personal customisation of my ship I get from engineers.

Any way I seem to get flooded with killing skimmer missions, is there some criteria that causes it to be so prevalent like the system's state? I've been to a few neighbouring systems where I've been spending most of my time now and it's similar, making up the bulk of my combat missions on my mission boards.

Unfortunately mission spamming seems to have gotten worse in my opinion, that is the mission board flooded with same old same, I like to do local passenger missions, but the boards are being flooded with ludicrous 22000ly missions to places like Colonia, this would be understandable if travelling to Colonia was a popular thing, it's like Fdev are trying to force Colonia down players throats , and the spamming leaves little room for local missions.

If you didn't enjoy the game 2 years ago you will not enjoy it today. They improved a lot but didn't turn it into something completely different and it's unlikely that this is ever going to happen. But since you already own the base game you could simply try it out yourself - if it turns out you somehow suddenly like it you can always buy Horizons at a later date.

Well. I did in EVE pretty much the same things that you enjoyed, before I came over to ED. No, there are no story campaigns and normal missions are very bland. There is one Guardian Stone campaign, but it's more like a lengthy nerdy code scanning game. But I enjoy the single player content in ED much more than I did in EVE (done the SoE and all the Epic Arcs). The multiplayer content is much better in Eve though. I also love Engineering. It's much more complex than rigging in EVE and does something that I miss in EVE - it makes you do a broad variety of activities instead of just grinding what you always do for isk since years and then buying whatever you need.

Definitely not.

This.

Game hasn't improved much.

Same stuff just put through the wash and re used in different places.

No new game mechanics so to speak.

Wait until 2019, ED may be better, SC may be out, dual Universe may be out, infinity battlescape may be out.

2019 looks hopeful!

*Gets ready to have hopes destroyed*

Yes.
Yes.

And if not; what have you lost: A couple of hours and twenty quid.

I personally would not need a straw poll of strangers to help me decide on a such a minor and entirely opinion-based decision.

Wait for a couple of weeks. There is sure to be a black Friday sale for Horizons.

Remember, if you buy Horizons now you'll also get next years content for free too(there will be some purchasable extra stuff but we don't know what that is yet).

As well as new ships and features it seems like the huge amounts of the game is getting an overhaul

So 2+years of updates for what? 20 quid, that's less than the price of a round of beer

It's all up to you and what you want. Personally I enjoy the horizon pack, but there are many things and issues with it I don't like. However as someone who owns multiple accounts I can only say it all depends on how you already like the game now.

TL;DR I last played Elite since beta to September 2015. I stopped because I got bored with the lack of mission depth and variety, I primarily like to flight various small and medium sized ships instead of one or one large jack-of-all-trades ship. I like to do everything from time to time when I feel like it, I'm not just combat centric. I play Open only. As such I haven't bought or experienced Horizons at all. Should I get back in and buy Horizons?

Seeing as the content from 2.4 onwards is HORIZONS OWNERS ONLY I dont see you have any choice unless you want half a game and no updates.

Thanks for all the replies and the FA video (I did try exclusively flying like this back when Isinona did this videos. Think I may attempt so again).

I am not so much focused with only playing Elite every day but just the expectation that if I pick up Horizons that it will offer enough for me to keep my interested if I play every odd or so day for a few hours. I have never treated Elite as an MMO I dedicate 100% of my gaming time to but when I last played in beta to 2015 I pretty much experienced everything I could have (exhausted the depth/variety of missions for example) at that point. If Horizon can keep my coming back every odd day or so for a gaming session for a while then I am happy. I just don't want to exhaust for example the extent of the game' content very quickly.

For that it sounds fine. You'll find a lot of frustration from 'hardcore' people who have invested thousands of hours and want more content faster. If you experienced nothing of S2 there is quite a load of stuff to see and do. You did miss the sale though, and I expect it will be on sale again end of december. So if you aint in a hurry you could wait for that. :)

This is very rewarding approach to ED and this is someone as hardcore fan as me saying it. People tend to jump in and trying to "get whole pie in mouth" approach, which fails for everyone.

Horizons best things are planets, passengers, fighters, if you are into tweaking your ships Engineers. I am doing day-by-day trade/mission/passenger loops between systems where I have found myself with. It works beautifully that way.

It's kind of funny reading this thread, as I ve just gone back to Warframe after about a year away from it, and O M G I have so much to do, and I've not even been to the new area that just got released.

I log back into ED and its ohh more of this then. The game has been improved with a lot of QOL over time but essentially the core of the game is still the same as it ever was.

No, simply because it's a more of the same.

I would recommend Horizons only if you enjoyed the content previous to 2.0, and with some recommendations too regarding the soul crushing grind for the PvP ships, nav ranking and money. Or if you're like those who actually recommend it, play very sporadically and with no true goal in mind.

Sure, now planets, SRV, and engineer bases look cool and all, but the same exact sense of boredom will stalk you and haunt you down in a few weeks, tops. Simply because most of the new things are gorgeous to look at and once used a few times, and they lose interest as fast as you might have gained it.

Yeah, I downloaded warframe from Steam too a few days back after an eternity away from it.

It's outstanding what they did with that game, they changed a corridor shooter/hack and slash loot based game into a fully fledged multiplayer experience with tons of variation in cosmetics and gameplay for each armor + a free roaming open world segment. All of this while running amazingly well on my crappy uni laptop too.

Not sure where your get your 'those who recommend it only play very sporadically' from. Seems like nonsense to justify your own dissatisfaction, but hey. :) Anwyay, how does someone know if they enjoyed 2.0 without Horizons? And why cant you have goals? Lots of people had all kinds of goals (flip systems, visit beagle point etc) and have been working for months to get there. Kinda weird you need to discredit that just because it fits your negative-nancy-narrative. :)

I used to play since beta till about 2015 a few months after Powerplay came out and then stopped playing (although I kept up to date with the game since).

I stopped playing because I found the depth with the mission system to be really lackluster. I was really disappointed by Powerplay because I found it was a big missed opportunity of using "blazing your own trail" and player-driven potential for Powerplay to be akin to something like EVE's faction warfare system, but it wasn't anything new than from what I was already doing in the game to begin with like simply gathering coupons.

I spent most of my time doing missions, exploring, and engaging other players in Open play.

I didn't get Horizons upon release because I was bored with the game and rather wanted to wait until its feature set was complete and with the 2.4 it is at its end, which is why I want to get back into it.

However of course over time keeping up with the forum and such I've heard a lot of complaints about the engineers and such but I can't really relate or truly understand or form an opinion because I simply haven't played Horizons. I heard a lot about the grind and RNG but grind is one thing I don't really experience in games personally. I have played EVE for example since 2003 (still do), and I have never grinded in it, I play and do what I enjoy, I could grind and mine/do industrial stuff all the time for ISK, but instead I make ISK from the market with my orders by changing them 1-2 times a day, and the rest of the time I am either doing solo PvP, exploring and peeping through wormholes, or when necessary when there is a CTA/war campaign for my alliance engaging in fleets as needed. I have never grinded for ISK or anything. In regards to what I have read about the RNG/engineers I don't find myself as someone in this sort of game to min-max my ship obsessively and I usually fly a couple of different ships for different things, and I much prefer flying small and medium sized ships.

Basically I'm just asking as someone who used to play Elite since it was in beta till around September 2015, is Elite worth getting back into and purchasing Horizons at this point? Will I enjoy it?Things I want from Elite is more in depth missions themselves from the mission board and stumbling upon things in space, variety, as well as "designed" mission story arcs that has its own designed and written self contained (or linked) story, I don't want thinks like fancy cutscenes, but written narrative experiences I can also engage in within the sandbox. If you've ever played EVE, think of something like Sisters of EVE story arc, I'd love Elite to have lots of "small stories" and large story arcs within a sandbox to enjoy because I love both concepts. Stories can be designed with narratives you actively engage in that doesn't treat the world (and you) as some single entity that is engaging in it. The engineers are an example of the potential to have stories that are designed with mission objectives/scripted events that are important to you as a player personally even though many players engage with engineers, but from what I've read there isn't any grand stories/missions really associated with each engineer.

Honestly? Get Horizons on the next sale but wait till q1 18 with the first Beyond release...

I guess you went of bit of insult here :)

I play regularly. But with 'regularly' I mean not actively, but still I remember what I did last time and where I would go next.

True goal? Not sure 'I have to own that ship' is true goal for me. For me true goal is to chill and have fun with my space adventures. Thanks to mission, ss, and other loathed parts of the game I can pick and choose what I do. And guess what, I also rank up during that play time.

Mind set is very different for this game. It seems OP has a bit of casual approach to the game.

Anwyay, how does someone know if they enjoyed 2.0 without Horizons? And why cant you have goals?

You surely stay near the water surface ready to bite anything that comes close to the pond, do you?
I forgot to add 2 words, edited now :)

My own dissatisfaction in certain things is what I use to not recommended a game, just like your satisfaction is what you use to recommend it. The fact that he abandoned the game before means 95% of time that he will abandon it again, for the same exact reasons probably.
