Kev B's ED Motion Chair - modification v4 - OMG !

Hello Commanders,

Thanks to FD for making reference to my ED motion chair v3 in newsletter #200

I have continued to develop its capabilities over the last 3 weeks and this has culminated in v4, which I completed at the weekend. The main drive motors have been vastly upgraded to give me super-smooth movement, big lean angles (great for cqc) and a huge leap in torque. Its a real blast now and I plan no further movement mods to this particular chair (although I'm designing a 6DOF for a 'new' chair in the new year). This one now does everything I need it to do - even allow my 'heavier' friends to try it out.

I attach a short 2min vid of the latest mods in motion (a short montage of pics followed by seeing the chair in motion in a quick CQC bout). The lean angles are huge - at only 50-60% power.

Fly safe (I have to now)

Great work CMDR - that mouse looks like its going to escape the pad at some point. Have you considered a trackball perhaps? I did with my pit and the arcade cabinet type can be had very cheaply from ebay.

Hi Kev - some nice work and some rough as foxtrot botchery on the go at the same time there, I must admit I am really impressed with the project overall despite my OCD nature having kittens about the state of your workshop, and the wooden bits and the exposed wires....

Yep, same here.

Kudos for your creation, but for Chrissake fix some safeties in there.

Brilliant, just brilliant. Green with envy and when you are ready to build for someone else, LET ME KNOW! as i want one like NOW!!!

Please keep these versions build updates flowing. i love to watch your progress!

Well done Sir, my rep seems so inadequate in comparison :(

Many thanks for the comments Commanders!

Just to reassure the "safety" and "bad wiring" worriers .......This chair is a development model, constantly being modified and adapted as I progress through the various modifications - in stages. To this end - point-to-point wiring is the most efficient method (but not necessarily the tidiest to look at). As I've pointed out in the past, the final build will be real pukka.

The main power supplies are HP 'server' PSU's and supplied by normal 'mains' 230v (rms). The wiring for those is professional and protected by plug-fuses, and circuit breaker and RCD (via the mains supply distribution board). All of the 'exposed' wiring that you see is 12v DC (well within the extra-low voltage band) and protected via its own separate fuses that I fitted. In addition, I built and programmed a monitoring circuit for the chair that monitors all motor and driver temps individually as well as current and voltage. As this is a development project - the latter was a definite requirement. I'm afraid many of the perceived 'safety-issue' comments are not an issue at all.

Finally, the chair does indeed have an emergency stop button, easy to reach (even with cv1 headset on) in case of any emergency. The only thing I really need now to keep the Galactic HSE/OSHA 'police' away to fit is a harness!

Anyway , I'm off for a (safe) fly this evening
take care

I agree in part - I usually use my garage for building 200mph+ racebikes (my other profession), so it can get a bit crowded in there when I'm working on multiple projects (which I am at the moment).

Ah, that explains the breadboard circuits. I was wondering if you were going to be doing long-term tweaking/experimenting.

Congrats, nice work! Couple of questions:

1) How are you pulling motion data from ED? Or are you just using joystick inputs?

2) You're moving around a LOT! How are you accounting for HMD movement? Are you offsetting it somehow so you don't move in-game?

Thanks
