Star Citizen Discussions v7

You can, currently, walk around, fit weapons, fly, pew-pew, repair/refuel... that's plenty of interesting stuff. Far more than just walking around your ship. Plus ships like the Starfarer/Gemini, Caterpillar, Connie, Retaliator provide quite a bit of square meter-age to explore. I can currently fly a Starfarer from Port Olisar to Grim HEX (and everywhere in between) in Q-Drive or via standard (and very slow) means and have people on that ship with me. And not just sitting at a console.

Theory crafting makes for a good game. CIG has said they plan on putting it in game, and has said so very recently (CitCon), so it sounds to me as if this is a very important thing to do right and get into the game.

Cool, refueling and repairing your ship! Can you describe the gameplay mechanics?

Yes you can actually get up and walk around the cockpit of your ships in ED.

Nope there are not plenty of ships available to him because the ships are locked behind a P2W pay wall.

Nope because you can earn that FAS in ED, you can't earn ships in SC.

I have to side with Merlin on this one - You can send your head flying around like the Fireys in Labyrinth but the rest of you is still sitting in the chair.

Again, you can walk around the inside of your cockpit, in VR, in a more immersive way that SC even hopes to do.

Yeah, but in SC you body turns into a Lovcraftian Noodle monster then glitches through the floor. Immersing your self in your ships superstructure is technically immersion, isn't it? :D

Yeah but according to the almighty CR, VR isn't good enough until it's down to a pair of sunglasses -- so there's no point following through with any of the promises he raised money on. All you simmers having a blast in VR despite early HMDs having low res are wrong. The visionary has spoken!

CIG really are missing their calling. CIG's inability to write good code had created some of the scariest creatures I have ever seen in a video game.

I thought the same when I saw those glitch videos -- that stuff should be harnessed into Lovecraftian horror! Rock Paper Shotgun would wax rhapsodic if an indie outfit put out a game exploiting those noodle bugs.

No, you can actually stand up and physically walk around the cockpit of your ship. It is far more than shifting a camera position.

Nope, it's just shifting a camera position with an unusual controller. Your character's body doesn't move, as far as I remember MFDs activate as if your viewpoint was still in the chair, simply no game mechanic recognizes such behaviour as "walking around".

So I guess the only ship that is available to me is the FAS.

I can name every ship in Elite as a ship you can get in the game.

Please name five ships in SC I can earn right now without paying additional real world money?

I really don't care if the model sits in the chair. I can get up and walk around which is exactly what I am saying. It's, by definition, getting up and walking around the cockpit.

Alternatively, I can say that SC doesn't let you walk around either, it just puts a camera in a space that moves around when you press buttons and keys. I'd also be wrong.

Elite could easily design the game so you can not leave the cockpit chair, they chose to allow it so that VR users can get up and walk around the cockpit, and ensured that the entire cockpit is rendered (even the stuff you normally can't see from the chair) which encourages VR users to do just that.

No, I can't agree to this madness. In SC you walk around in a game, in ED you walk around while playing the game, it's a difference. Moving a camera isn't gameplay,

camera [...] that moves around when you press buttons and keys
this is. Using a vanity camera or whatever it's called to look at your ship from outside in ED isn't EVA gameplay. Third person cameras floating over the character's shoulder don't make TPP games flying games.

no one said it was gameplay. But you can physically get up and walk around the cockpit of your ships in ED.

This is awesome - yeah, your avatar stays in his seat, but it is real first person VR walking around (fast forward to 2:11):

Ha, yes!

Can't you guys see, say -- Alec Meer droning on about that? "The primordial, endlessly shifting forms of CIG's Star Horror are a marvel to behold. CIG has finally stumbled on a successful formula to present the sheer unsettling ALIEN-NESS of well, aliens." Alice O'Connor: "Noodle-em-up Star Horror blah blah blah. Insert cutesy thing here."

Indie cred to be had, devs! Go for it.

For all of SCs potential successes and failings them backtracking on VR and clearly building a game unsuited to vr is for me the biggest turn off they could have done. ED may have it's failings but the moment I put on my rift I am IN my ship. After playing this way since mid 2014 I just can't conceive going back to flat screen. :(

Which "you"? In-game "you" still sits in the chair, evidenced by the fact that "your" in-game body can steer the ship while "you" admire the rivets on the other side of the cockpit, real "you" stares at a screen really close to your face while walking around "your" room. Also, this is an immensely stupid discussion.
