I never wear a watch:

Just look up and if the sun is as high as it can be; then it is lunch time and then time for my afternoon nap. What else do I need to know?

Nothing.

Lol

I used to wear watches all the time. But in my old job I used to get them caught on things all the time, even more so in my new job. I lost or broke so many, I gave up.
So I don't bother anymore.

I just use my phone to look at the time.

So here is my watch;

I just use my phone too. I like the look of nice watches and like the idea of buying one but when I run through a cost benefit analysis I conclude something similar to that as if I were about to spend £200 on a pair of boxer shorts to wear over some briefs.

I'd like a nice watch though so fair play to those that have one :)

I am not on Imgur (and photobucket are being unfriendly) so I cannot post up a picture of my watches. I will, however, tell you the story behind the one I am always wearing.

I was unemployed at the time (early 2005), and I was wandering into town to help a friend set up his stall (it was either do that, or sit at home feeling sorry for myself, which I do not like doing). I noticed, in a drain cover, something that looked unusual. I picked it up, and it was a nice looking watch. After I finished helping my friend I called into the police station, and handed the watch in. Two days later I got a phone call from an employment agency who I had sent my C.V. to. They had a client they thought I would be suitable for. I met their local rep (the agency was based in London, and I live in Berkshire), and I got on well with him. The following day I had an aptitude test (over the phone, multiple choice), and two hours later I was told that I had got the job (Yay!). Several weeks later I visited the police station, to be told that nobody had claimed the watch, and that now I could consider it to be mine. I consider it to be a bit of a lucky charm, as the week I found it was the week my life changed for the better.

Although the watch itself is a no-name (Mx-Onda), the workings are made by Seiko, and are a YM52 unit.

Had quite a few watches along the years (worn one since at least 11 years old), I'm not really an expert or an enthusiast about watches, but couldn't stay without one. If I have to choose between going out without a watch or without underwear, I'll gladly choose the latter. [squeeeee] (in that regard, pendulums still qualify as a clock, right?)

Here are my current ones:

On the left the Moto 360 that I usually wear during the week (Christmas present from my gf), very useful when driving to make calls via voice commands or take a peek at incoming messages without being too distracted, and also at work for checking emails at a glance, adding calendar remainders on the fly or ignoring unwanted calls when speaking to customers. Also with personalized Buckyball watch face, because fashion.

On the right a very minimal Chronostar (anniversary present from my gf, again. Isn't she lovely! [smile]), sleek, lightweight and comfortable for when I actually need to know what time is it, in style. Also love the cloth wristband.

T.j made a thread about timepieces on an anniversary, a marker of time. That anniversary? He posted this thread exactly ten years after first joining the forum, according to the member list.

Coincidence? I think not.

T.j is Illuminati confirmed.

I'm with this guy. ↑

My job requires not to have any loose articles dangling off my body, for you know, safety purposes.
However, I did ask an electrician for the time, who wears an oversized watch on his wrist, who pulled out his iPhone to check the time...

So by todays standards, this thread is so off topic, it's probably too off topic for the off topic board.

I have some watches in my drawer but to be entirely honest, i haven't used em for years, because they are not that good to simply wear, and if i want to know time there is my phone.

Here's one of mine.

Omega Speedmaster moonwatch.

Mods think alike. This is my current 'giving my left hand a point, as all it does is stop my watch falling off' subject:

The thing that's hard to explain to people is rather odd, not only is it a piece of wonderful craftmanship, the sapphire glass is pretty much unscatchable. Mine's nearly 20 years old and the face is perfect. Likewise, small things help. The Seamaster has a clever expansion to the wrist strap for putting it over a wetsuit/drysuit. My seamaster is actually more waterproof than me.

They don't have any story per se, though. They are relatively cheap, reliable, waterproof, unscratchable and altogether pleasant to wear.
I just like'em. :)

There are some beautiful timepieces in this thread.

My day-to-day watches are fairly boring and inexpensive things - I've got a rather understated Sekonda that I wear to the office, and a practical Casio for other stuff (not a classic 80s digital watch, alas - I just picked it up because it was cheap and the battery in my other watch had died at that point, and I didn't have time to go anywhere but Argos!).

I do have two other rather lovely ones - a Pulsar I bought... ooh, 20 years ago, which really needs some TLC and is reassuringly solid on my wrist, and a beautiful vintage South African railwayman's fob watch, which generally just looks decorative (and which I fear I may need to part with).

Perhaps time to break out the camera?

Incidentally, I find I'm peculiar amongst my colleagues for wearing a watch. Most people seem to tell the time with telephones these days. (No, not the Speaking Clock...) Mind you, they also keep their diaries in there.

Cool thread, I’ve had many watches, I loved my Omega Speedmaster and the Breitling Navitimer Olympus, but Rolex is my favourite brand. I’ve had the Submariner steel no-date, Submariner gold/steel and a classic GMT Master full gold with black dial and the jubilee bracelet. My grail has always been the 18K Day-Date, the «President», and I recently found and bought a mint 2002, until now a safe-queen, almost unworn. This is now my everyday timepiece. Don’t know if I’ll ever buy another watch :)
