Out of interest how many here are running it on PS4? Not trying to make excuses, honest, still happy with my time, but things like the galaxy map and station services seem to take an age to load (especially when youre in a rush), do those running it on PC have the same issues?

PC here, sometimes the Galaxy Map is a little slow, but not as slow as the system map or Missions Board can be! Those times are generally more down to internet connection rather than hardware though.

My Bookmarks were... The stations :D

Ditto.

Having read Polly, Aken and furrycat's posts I'm entirely happy with whatever mid-table result I end up with. I can't be doing with all that! (impressive tho it is), that sounds like hard work to me! Rock up, strip the ship for weight, put my faith in the route plotter and floor it ... that's my style. :p (actually I did dabble with not refuelling at every station and hoping the reduced weight might save me a jump or two ... it didn't! and I did dabble with filtering out random star types in the hope of tricking the route plotter into coming up with a shorter route ... it didn't).

Respect to those prepared to go the extra mile to optimise their routes tho ... very impressive stuff indeed.

P.S. I threw my first pot today! Well chuffed. :D

Agreed :)

Actually I'd worked out from the distances in the first post that I wouldn't have to refuel at Hamal, but Barathaona I had to check on my first run. I did it purely for the 5-10 seconds you'd save by not refueling :p

Congratulations on the pot.

Guys and gals, you can stop holding your breath, here's the video each and everyone of you was craving all day long.

Or maybe not.

Edited out the gazilion jumps, and also the galmap shenanigans.

Rock up, strip the ship for weight, put my faith in the route plotter and floor it ... that's my style. :p

You know that's also my thing as well, but what can I tell you, it all started as a simple "let's check if I can eyeball a better route here and there", then one thing led to another and an hour and a half later I found myself with that mess of a bookmark list above. :eek:
Route was still less than ideal judging from furrycat's analysis, but at least I nailed the fuel management part flawlessly for once. :D

Regarding the DBX in the free-for-all, I lacked the range to make use of the white dwarfs between Ugraswar and LP 102, so it was run with the route planner as usual. My tactics here was that painting the ship pink would make it go faster.
Whoops, didn't think about these :p

I played around a bit with EDTS (for anybody wondering: It's basically a better route planner in form of a python program along with a few other powerful tools).
With the DBX it of course comes down a lot to engineering, but the minimum range required for 16 jumps is somewhere around 57.5 ly (for 15j you would need at least 67.42 ly while anything >51.9 ly is enough for 17j), so a good grade 5 FSD should be enough with a normal jump range-focused build. I managed to barely squeeze enough range out of a shieldless mostly-D-grade loadout to fit engineered 4A thrusters without having to do manual plots (I had one critical jump bookmarked just in case though).
Most of the approaches were relatively short and fairly standard (I mostly used a spiraling approach and am now getting used to it) with the two gas giant stations making light use of the deselect trick (When approaching objects that are a few ls out of their parental body (mostly at gas giants), there's actually a trick to stop really fast if you are approaching the object (station) too fast: Deselecting the target while having throttle at 0% makes you stop nearly immedeatly. It only works where normal gravity braking doesn't work at all though.)

I've had responses to the evidence queries, CapitanAceR's entry will have to come as a late addition, so lets bring you some results! The last 26 hours or so of the race were fairly busy, and have seen a bit of a shake up on the scoreboards...

Starting with Free For All, a couple of veteran commanders turned up determined to show that the race course doesn't have to be purely a place for small ships. Cmdr Crotalus brought his Beluga Liner Cetus which, despite a bit of toasting on the way round, ends the race propping up the bottom of the leaderboard. A couple of minutes ahead is Cmdr Perseus Tacitus in the Anaconda Festina Lente, this wealthy participant having generously donated a fair-sized bit of work to one or two of the repair shops on the way round.

Moving into the top ten, in ninth place we welcome Cmdr Markzx59, finally making it to the track in the Diamondback Explorer Hellfire, with a time of just over 33 minutes after reporting a bit of trouble with Belugas on the way round. Within sight ahead, Cmdr Stern Winter improved his time in the Asp Explorer Polar Express by just over a minute, enabling him to keep in front of Markzx59 and continue keeping the DBX contingent honest.

Cmdr Maro-Val in Turrita II also improved his time, by just enough to get past Alec Turner and take fifth position.

And now to the podium, where less than twenty seconds separated the top three, all Diamondback Explorers. Cmdr Bruski managed to hang on to third with his time of 28:54. Cmdr Aken B. in Bucket of Bolts pushed his ship hard, improving his previous time by more than a minute and a half to get ahead of Bruski with a time of 28:43. However that still wasn't quite enough, as Cmdr Cookiehole arrived in his normal style. With one or two close calls (hull down to 5% at one point...), Cookiehole's RATtlesnake squeezed through to take the win by a margin of eight seconds, completing the course in 28 minutes and 34 seconds.

The Adders have been equally out in force. Cmdr Ray Mobula returned for a second outing in Wumpus - The Hunter, successfully pushing past the one hour mark despite needing to evade multiple interdiction attempts, but unfortunately limited by a penalty for a missing screenshot. A few minutes ahead, another newcomer in the form of Cmdr Pajk of Turboskoczek completed the course in a steady time of just under 56 minutes.

Into the top ten again, and Cmdr Maro-Val switched to set a time in the Adder as well, Adder-o-vgaltis's time of just over 48 minutes putting him in 9th place. Newcomer Cmdr NWade's unnamed Adder recorded a couple of attempts with a good improvement between the two, setting a good final time of 46:32 to take 7th.

Onto the podium, where it's all change, with Cmdr Polly unfortunately pushed down to fourth. First-time Buckyballer Cmdr Arnul returned for an improved attempt in Dyskoteka w Remizie to set an impressive time of 43:36 and take third place. Cmdr Aken B. also improved his previous time in Happy-Go-Bucky, with fuel management techniques enabling him to gain nearly three minutes. With a time of 42:50, Aken B. might have thought he was safe, and might now be cursing that mid-race phone call.

Outdoing Cookiehole at his own game, though, is Cmdr furrycat (or maybe that should be Cmdr futrzanykot, following through the linguistic theme of his ship name and bobbleheads). With a lot of preparation work enabling some extensive fuel management, and despite clipping several station exits, furrycat's ship Zupa z żmija jeszcze lepsza blazed through to take first place with a time of 42:37.

Well done to all (especially Cookiehole and furrycat), and thank you for taking part, we hope you had fun.

Special mention has to go to Cmdr Polly, who set the early benchmarks in both classes with some fabulous times, but in the final day's racing was pushed off the podium in both. :(

A note on next races: Currently the next race is scheduled for 2-10 December, keep an eye out in this section of the forums for the race thread. Next one after that is likely to be 6-14 January. The schedule is updated on the website at www.buckyballracing.org.uk; we'll let you know about new races when they start through our Discord channel; and if you would like to keep a closer track of our race planning (or have an idea for hosting one yourself) you may wish to keep an eye on our thread in the Groups section of these forums.

Beaten by a few seconds by furrycat and cookiehole. Ah, that warm fuzzy feeling that only routine can give you. [smile]

Good tactic from furrycat in naming his ship that way...we both had very good planning and piloting, but in the end he applied a bit more...polish.

Crowd stares silently

...aaand The Winged Hussars' KOS list just got a brand new entry. [where is it]

Now back to seriousness (or a sorry attempt at it), thank you rootstrat and all TWH for setting this up, and to drakhyr of course for the hosting efforts, it has been a pleasure to celebrate (in our peculiar way!) a real cosmonaut.

And one last thing I wanted to say from the start of this race...whoever came up with that race banner, a great work, I absolutely loved it!

Ah yes yes, almost forgot, bitter congratulations and a fake smile to those two cookiesomething and furrycat guys, I hate you both with a passion.
No really, congratulations to both, and Polly and Bruski too, the kind of amazing flying and planning always to be expect from the professionals. :D
Honourable mention for cmdr Arnul, that was one hell of a time! I hope to meet you (and everyone else!) again in future races. o7

P.s: speaking of meeting, after seeing the latest update to the leaderboards I think I've met cmdr Crotalus along the course...that hollow-squared Beluga dashing through the slot at ludicrous speed was all too suspicious :p...should be somewhere in my Adder video, can't remember the station...

Thanks for a great race, rootstrat and drakhyr!

Being knocked off the podium was hardly unexpected since I haven't been able to do any racing since tuesday. I'm more surprised I stayed on it for so long. Congratulations to furry, cookie and everyone else who had fun! Good to see so many new racers with such impressive results!

Thanks to drakhyr and the Hussars ... terrific race and another superb turn-out. Congrat's to the usual suspects and special congrat's to Arnul ... podium place on your first Buckyball Race? Unheard of! (was the rule about buying everyone else drinks clearly explained to you by the race organisers?) ;-)

Joining in with thanks to everyone for making this event fun! A few special mentions from me: Cmdr Quarion for collecting data on all the Hermaszewski stations in the galaxy, Cmdr Kethrax for working out the actual race route, Cmdr Galimathias for an excellent banner, Cmdr SP-GGX for producing and donating the awesome coasters as prizes for free, Cmdr Alec Turner for introducing me to Buckyball Racing at Lavecon earlier this year, Cmdr Drakhyr for looking after this thread and updating it with the results and all the Buckyballers for creating this awesome activity in Elite! You're all legends!

My only shame is that I didn't manage to squeeze more runs, especially in FFA category. I've had 4 different ships at the ready, but I've started a new job and had lots of stuff IRL to sort out because of that... You can expect to be seeing me at the next race too, if only time allows!

Thanks again all - great fun!

Ah, I will contact the winners to get your postal addresses in order to send you the prizes - as soon as they arrive from Poland to me.

Thanks to Drakhyr, Rootsrat and the Winged Hussars for a great race.

Congratulations to Cookiehole and Furrycat for the special coasters. Not envious at all ;)

Fly safe, everyone.

As BCR noob Im really happy with 3rd place. I made about 10 laps and every time lerned something new: how to start using boost and not splash on station wall, how to fast land on proper pad, how to refuel and set new system on galaxy map without losing time and how to approach station in supercruise. Last one was most difficult. I used tehnique called here "Loop" because I knew only this one. Using it I made my personal perfect run which gave mi 3rd place, but time 43:36 is all I can did.

My route (I saved 4 jumps):
START: === Arthaiyati (fuel level: ~40% - faster boost)
PLOT COURSE: === Ugraswar, REFUEL TO: 100%
PLOT COURSE: === LP 449-6,
SELECT ONLY: === Ngurelban,
PLOT COURSE: === LP 102-320, REFUEL TO: 51%
SELECT ONLY: === LHS 494,
PLOT COURSE: === Hamal, REFUEL TO: 39%
SELECT ONLY: === Tascheter Sector BG-O a6-1,
SELECT ONLY: === Tascheter Sector OX-U b2-2,
PLOT COURSE: === Buzhang Ku, REFUEL TO: 100%
PLOT COURSE: === Barathaona, REFUEL TO: no refueling
PLOT COURSE: === Serre, REFUEL TO: 70%
PLOT COURSE: === Crucis Sector DL-Y d163,
SELECT ONLY: === Col 285 Sector II-O b21-6,
PLOT COURSE: === Arthaiyati

Sorry for what could be silly questions, but being another BCR newbie myself, can someone explain the idea/reasons for just selecting a destination? Ive seen it used to find certain points in space (on the live stream when FD announced 2.4 etc) but don't understand how it helps here.

Also, how do you refuel certain amounts? I cant remember seeing the option on PS4, mind you I haven't looked that hard if I'm honest.

Thanks.

reasons for just selecting a destination?

Your jump range is dependent on - among other factors - the mass of the ship including the mass of fuel carried. As long as you have at least the max fuel per jump amount listed in outfitting for your FSD, the less fuel you have, the further you can jump.

The route planner always assumes you have a full fuel tank and plots for your worst case range. That means it won't plan a route you might end up too heavy to make - which would be a bummer - but it also means it won't give you a jump that you could make if you burned some fuel previously.

Sometimes that means that it will give you two jumps to a destination that you could make in one. By selecting the destination manually you can do the direct jump and save time.

Furthermore, it's sometimes really obvious what's happening. You'll see a long hop to a system close to where you want to go and then a really short one. It's a good idea to check if you can go direct when you see that. At other times you'll need racer's intuition to realise that you can save some time.

how do you refuel certain amounts?

Advanced maintenance.
