Cleaning lenses (Rift)

So how do you guys clean your lenses? I'd like to get some optical wipes but these typicaly have isopropyl alcohol or the like in them, and I believe Oculus specifically state not to use such chemicals?

I just don't like wiping a dry lens with a dry cloth to get smears off.

Had the cv1 since it came out and I just wipe them with my shirt and the lenses still looks great

Rift is the only to have this warning and it is only to get out of something down the line.

I just use the same wipes as for my glasses have done so for over a year as needed and no problems.

Use a very smooth/fine Lint Free camera lens cloth similar, but not the same as this one...... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wa-Microfi...12042102&sr=1-3&keywords=camera+lens+cleaning

Not sure where you smears are coming from Neil, but you should stop poking it with your fingers or other appendages. :) ;) My CV1 since April has only dust on it, and i never touch the lens with anything but these cloths!

I very quickly learned to stop lifting the unit onto the natural "waiting" position of your forehead. That introduces huge smears onto the lenses.

Now I simply want to periodically wipe the lenses to ensure nothing is on there to cause out lovely god rays!

Happy to use dry clothes, but I'm sure alcohol based wipes would remove oil/smeras far more easily?

They say their lenses are not glass, hence not using alcohol etc?

Ah plastic lenses, fun for the whole family. Friends don't let friends use plastic optics.

Get a brush and something like a rocket blower from a photography retailer (e.g., this kit), make sure the brush is big and fluffy. The blower will deal with most loose dirt. If you manage to get a grease stain on there, use a soft, lint-free cloth (maybe microfibre, see kit above, I wouldn't trust dish cloths for plastic) and maybe moisten it with water with just the tiniest amount of mild detergent and that will take care of that. Original brand q-Tips are also really nice to have around.

Never exert pressure when cleaning, don't breathe on lenses to try and moisten them for cleaning (spittle), and don't use canned compressed "air" (risk of mechanical damage from sheer force and freezing, and unless you get the highly pure lab stuff it will always leave compressor oil residue).

Isopropyl or pure ethanol is used for cleaning plastic based lenses and cd's as well.
It's the fluid they included in CD cleaning kits etc so unless their plastic is super vulnerable, and then I would have realised when I first cleaned the rift a year ago and it broke, which it hasn't.

I did try cleaning an old CD using EthylAcetate once, that was fun, kind of dissolved in my hand after grabbing the wrong Jerrry can at work :p

I'd rather use 70%, pure alcohol just evaporates and you end up "dry humping" the surface with your cleaning implement. At 70%, it'll stay wet a bit longer so you have less friction, longer time to dissolve impurities, and it'll wick dirt into a cloth. The remaining moisture evaporates very quickly.

Just use MEK and weld all your CDs together :D

LOL.

Yeah the 99% pure stuff was only cause that's what we had in the pump at work, as I no longer work there I just use the usual over counter stuff, which is horribly overpriced Isoprop diluted to 10% or something.

Most glasses, and mid range camera lenses are plastic these days, this is the norm, you would have to go magnitudes up in price and weight to get real glass.

I was considering getting these to use every now and then on the oculus - https://www.amazon.co.uk/ZEISS-Lens-Wipes-Pack-200/dp/B00IKGH2TI

Lint free cloths and a little breath when the lenses get a fingerprint or some errant smudge. Gentle. No alcohol. Not a scratch in 18 months.

Those prepackaged moist towelettes tend to dry up surprisingly quickly in my experience. Check out a box of Kimwipes and a bottle of the Zeiss cleaning spray if you want something that explicitly says it's good for plastic. The spray will outlast you, and you have nice and big wet and dry wipes when you need them. Two squirts and a single wipe are probably good for the Rift, a pair of glasses, and a monitor.

Maybe this goes without saying, but make sure you're spraying the towel first then using it to clean the lenses. Don't spray anything directly inside the Rift!

I use the cloth that came with it.

No way! The more you use that single cloth, the more crap it picks up, the more likely you will scratch your lenses.

I believe these were the specific wipes recommended by Oculus Staff on the Oculus Forums a while back: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004Z29L9K/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

although I've also used the Zeiss wipes: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UWNFRIA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
