General / Off-Topic Another Copy of Elite Sold!

I post on several forums, Facebook groups, YouTube, etc. Heck I even have friends in the real world!

Just persuaded someone else to get ED this week, whilst it's on sale.

I know 2 people messaged me to say they'd got ED off watching my (rather crap) YT videos. Someone in a Formula 1 Facebook group of mine saw one of my video's and remembered playing it in the 80's. He bought it too. Couple of relatives have bought it also, after me mentioning it.

I think Braben should give me a commission or a few FDev shares, don't you think? :D

Heh. nah.
But good recruiting job, nonetheless. :)
But now they're your responsibility, so better show them the ropes! (Nice opportunity and inspiration for another one or two videos. ;))

Actually - I was reading some of the Steam comments (the negative ones)

Seems the learning curve is too much for many of today's Special Snowflakes - so I thought of doing a tutorial series to help them out, since I just got a 3rd account. I'll leave it too their mommies to wipe their bottys though.

Yeah. Most of the negativity towards Elite is born from people's inability or unwillingness to blame themselves for their mistakes. It's trendy. :)

It may have something to do with Elite's motto - "Blaze your own trail". Most people seem to translate it as "I can do whatever I want and the game should better arrange a good time for me", while it actually means "You're on your own buddy. Nobody cares about you, you eat what you cook."
:D

(edit: by "most people" I mean "most people raining hate on Elite" of course, not the majority of players. Majority of players are awesome.)

I was able to learn enough off of the tutorial stages to get an interest in learning more. Got me to where I am today. Sitting on a fleet with a Corvette and a Cutter at the top. Can't understand how people don't use their mk1 eyeballs to read what a screen is telling them. Poor folk. They miss a lot of good experiences.

They seem to be incapable of the joy of wonder and discovery in a game that is ALL about wonder and (self)discovery. Some of them also dislike piloting a spaceship, apparently. :D

There's a generation of people who have been spoon fed in everything they do, particularly gaming (in this context).

Elite is not that kind of game, so they just can't cope.

We can't even blame them. (Some of them)
It's kind of sad to watch someone who REALLY tries to like Elite, but simply wasn't raised in this mindset.

But hey, copies were sold and you've a promising career in marketing. Maybe just the former bit. Either way...

Well, I tried to slap a meme in here. I'll just say "Yay!" myself...

Perhaps a little ambitious in terms of representing the value of the sale - but you do have a valid point, and there are plenty of business models to support it.

For instance, if when buying a copy of ED, you put a legitimate commander (or their registered email) in who recommended it for you, that commander could receive free items from the stores, special "recommend only" ship decals, and as the recommendations build up, more and more accolades could be shared with that commander. 100 recommendations might get something really special.

Of course, it's open to abuse. Hence why I am not sure real money is really going to fly. But the business model [which I have been involved in, in many other non-gaming markets] can make a huge difference - in this casing really upping the ante for players to act as the marketing/sales/viral social network promoting the game.
