ED: still no multiplayer content...

True ... the multiplayers are far from content.

Eh? Eh? *high five* Eh? Fellers? Don't leave me hanging here.

Fellers?

[sad]

*Goes to high five, reads through your post again*

Multiplayers are far from content.

Far from content.

Far from...content.

MIND. BLOWN. *keels over*

...pretty much, yes.

Aside from locking an engineer at Shinrata, I couldn't take less notice of my combat rank. It has no bearing on actual combat ability, I can get discounted modules and ships from LYR space, and...well that's about it. I think I've covered off everything related to it.

Oh yeah, it means you have higher end missions. Which can actually be negative, as many of the more awkward materials are obtained from mid-rank missions, leading to many experienced players asking to dial their combat rank back so they can get missions they actually need.

At least originally, while not "useful" per se, it was an actual indication of achievement. I bet most players would fail to dock correctly in Elite before hitting the Elite rank in ED.

So yeah, to sum up...useless and an inconvenience.
...

wait -
the Player federation ranks have multiple impacts:

1. somehow they affect what missions you get, still
2. what ship and what rank you have affects what NPC will attack you. since their bounties is also somehow connected to their ship and rank, this affects how much bounties you can farm
3. Elite Rank in trading gives you a persistant 1.5% discount ontop of any other discount... thats good for your rebuy
4. OFC, there is the only grade 3 shield cell engineer in that permit locked system
5. for some reasons, FDEV cares more about seeding the shinrata station with new modules and ships then the rest of the galaxy, or giving any hints ingame where you can get certain equip.
6. at some point there have been missions unique to that system, but FDEV decided to randomly place exploit spots around the galaxy for players to find
7. Multicrew -> your share depends on your PF combat rank.
8. I am pretty sure there was even a global rebuy discount bound to one of the ranks, but that could have also been a paid feature of the past.
9. if you are not at least dangerous, you are no valid target for archon fury's sidewinder and wont appear on his stream.

Update: as per new Pixelbandits podcast, Ed Lewis has confirmed wing missions can be taken solo.

So we still have no multiplayer content and none in the works - just a regurgitation of solo content that splits the rewards at the end.

Good job guys.

I think someone mentioned a reworking of PowerPlay. Scrap the current methods of increasing your faction's power in the galaxy, and force players into combat or interaction with each other in order to establish control. Each week, have very specific locations of conflict/interaction where players can go to extract specific materials for their faction, and give opposing faction players an opportunity to stop other players from successfully supplying their faction for expansion. Don't allow PowerPlay activities to be carried out in Solo or Private; Open only. Set it up so every PowerPlay related action taken by players creates necessity for some sort of player interaction, be it combat or cooperation.

I've been staring at this topic for nearly two weeks now, and I still don't how to say this politely - so here goes;
I both love and despise the nature of this thread.

On one hand the hyperbole is touching the border to a straight up lie. The way it's communicated is the usual twisting of the facts: AKA - "there is no [insert whatever fits agenda]"

---------

On the other hand, I absolutely agree with the agenda at hand.
There is nothing in the game that a player of sufficient skill and/or equipment can't handle on his own.
I could go on a long confirmation bias rant about this, but this thread already has that covered.

But none of that changes the hard objective fact, that multiplayer exists in Elite.

Whenever I play COOP with my buddy, whether it's wing or multi-crew, it's done entirely to help him, since he is a low-skill player and he knows it. (Nothing wrong with that)
He is uncomfortable in using strafing or FA-Off, so he doesn't use either.
He is not capable of beating the AI in a 1v1 scenario against a ship bigger than his Vulture.

So from where I'm seeing this, the problem is not whether the game has multiplayer but rather that multiplayer is optional and focused at the lower skilled, or lower equipped player base - leaving nothing for experienced and well equipped players.

And sure as heck despise the idea of having to arbitrarily handicap oneself: "Because challenge"

i almost fear asking - but what would you expect under the term "wing mission" ?
Missions where one person has to tank up the armor, another person has to equip healing beams, we need a ranged DPS ship, and another with battering ram for close combat DPS. (Battering ram, what an awesome idea).. then we need to have our own instance, and bad stuff to kill and then we upgrade our cutters, anacondas & corvettes with blue & purple loot, then we come back again and again until we, at the very least have an epic FSD, epic, fuel tank, epic bulkheads, epic life support, epic power distributor, epic cargo racks, epic power plant, epic sensors, epic thrusters, epic shields, and epic toilet seat.

Simple MMO 101 :D (BUT IT WORKS lol)

EDIT: Oh I so forgot.. Epic docking computer... the standard docking computer is getting old! Also, engineers can just be a rename for 'enchanting' :) :)

Not sure I follow this logic.

Wait, what? I was on your side before, but - what? You're saying that nothing can be considered multiplayer content unless it LOCKS OUT single player participation?

In order for the wing mission to be engaging it should obviously require teamwork...

Yes, to some the mere fact that solo players can even try the content on their own means its not good enough. Its ridiculous.

Hey, wing missions is better than nothing. I feel like whatever the game evolves into we always have something to complain about :p
On a serious note tho, what would you add in this regard ? What content could fit in without destroying everything else around it or making it useless ?

Agree. It's a door FD has opened which they could really take to a new level. There should be some mega- thargoid and/or fleet which is so immense and hard to fight that you have to have a squadron to take them down, and you have to use different tactics in that combat to achieve it.

Its more than that...said boss encounter needs to actually change the system/BSG when you're done. Otherwise you do it once or twice and its just another boring grind. Thargoids should be a faction that takes control of a system. And player activity actually does some thing to that faction when you kill them.

At the moment they're completely dead. 100% scripted, zero outcome for killing them or interacting with them.

Are you saying soloing a wow raid is engaging multiplayer content?
Have you ever done a WoW raid?
It's very engaging multiplayer content; just because some players are good and strong enough to solo some* of them, doesn't mean the content is suddenly no longer engaging, or multiplayer.

* It's usually the older ones that Blizz hasn't reworked yet; I'm personally not aware of anyone solo'ing one of the new ones (but then I don't follow WoW news any more).

I'd like to plug a world vs. world option in ED. Factions battling over a large region. There are diverse roles for large groups, small groups, even individual players within the combat instance. Sieges to take points, defense of points, supply protection and theft, scouting, pitched battles, feints, strategy, drama, etc. etc. This is all emergent game play based on a compelling setting and a faction reward system. Regions could be instances with megaships, asteroid fields, ground bases, space stations, alien sites. Low skill entry level players can participate in roaming zergs, experienced players take on the role of commanders issuing orders. It would almost be like the game trailers. It's great fun - but would require a central server...
