Personal Narrative

Lets see what we get before we write it off altogether, eh?

Ah I haven't written it off but i have zero expectations :p

When they said personal narrative, my fantasy immediately went to those unannounced paid content things that are to come this year.

A real deflation they anchored the same idea to again, gear progression. Yay elites come up with talent trees. Look that's fine but its not narrative. I'll even extend a 'i get it' to the idea that they might consider elite a raw sandbox internally, but to a non combat play that's not narrative, thats NOTHING (yet).

Sorry i really dont think negatively about that tech broker feature, whatever they have in mind is probably great, its again just pinning that to 'narrative'.
 
A personal narrative would at leats mena, we save a guy from a fight or emergency call and then bring him to a specific place where he is then available for that one players. this does at elast let the player choose where his broker will be. and this would be rather unique to thsi player.

Meaning; I guarantee you will use Tech Brokers Mk 1 (we saw last night) as a save / debug stage.
 
Because, you can go grind for 37 hours then complain on the forums for another 37 hours about how you were grinding, but you dont have to. You can also get them in more interesting ways.

So narrative in games these days is meta-gaming on the forums?

"I supported the uprising of communist rebels in fringe system X, and asked to be rewarded in materials/data rather than credits. After this I helped them stave off a famine, and hunted down a pirate lord that threatened the system. This got me the required materials to gain access to a customized weapon from a local tech broker." etc etc.

But yeah, you can just drive on a planet for 37 hours. The more interesting question is: why would you do something you dont want to do, then spend time complaining about doing something you dont want to do? Its the eternal question when it comes to grinding, and it'll never end. Its why Vegas does so well, drug dealers live like kings and why neuroscience is so fascinating: the frailty of the frontal lobes. :p

I want to try the new weapons.
I don't want to spend 37 hours of grinding rocks to get them.

So what to do then?

Obvious, raw grinding is never a good thing in a game.

Certainly there should be a task to be done so it feels like a sort of accomplishment to unlock something, but this can be done in a number of different, interactive and entertaining ways that go beyond "drive around willy-nilly, pray to RNGesus, find rock, shoot, pray to RNGesus, maybe get the material you need", rinse-repeat ad nauseam.
 
I actually like the personal unlocks.

I hope such unlocks will also be availabe through chained missions in the future, as that will truly be a personal narrative with actual useful rewards that make you remember your endeavors. Once it ties into the coming player journal and all mechanics are in place, it will be a very cool experience for sure.

The last time i was hyped for ED, was the Guardian Update. So i am now :)
 
Everything every Commander I've had did added to their personal narrative. All my Commanders had their own stories, some that I remember, some that I've forgotten. Playing the game creates a personal narrative, it's not supplied only by doing a specific part of the game. It seems a bit strange that FD are saying 'here, this bit is for your personal narrative'.
However if it's good interesting content what does it matter what FD call it.

There's basically description given what they are doing.

You are so obsessed with meta that it isn't funny.

It's difficult to tell. We don't know what the material broker looks like yet and, it was stated in stream, that the material levels aren't fixed, it's just a start point for debugging and they can change.

So can adding different ways to unlock the tech broker levels .. but for goodness sake, install the tech broker first because that thing is linking to the galaxy map and - your personal - outfitting in relevant station locations.

I think we should be happy for what we get because do too much at once and you invite a total bug fest. Would you like to be invited to unlock a Tech you've already unlocked again and again for example?

Whats hard to code about this? All you need is another database enty where ones "personal" broker is located thats an entry of a single station. And if you are at this station a button is available to enter the entire broke menu.

Sorry but you missed out a step ... invent personal broker.

I'm not against your idea but one step at a time right? We can't infer anything about Frontier's plans for Tech Brokers, we can accept the development for the game potential it unlocks.

I would play the game, but I can't, because I get no money or mats. So I have to grind instead of playing the game.

If the game was designed better, I could play the game and would get mats and money while playing. But alas, it isn't so.

Whether I spend my mats on the Engineers or a Tech Broker makes zero difference. The grind is the same.
