Big ship/God ship woes

Nice. I've thought about the save reset, but I've just put too much time and effort into the game to really give it a serious consideration.

I'd put about 1600 hours into my CMDR before I reset. I don't know if that's a lot. It only took me a couple of months to get G5 access for all ENG and that's only playing about 10 hours a week.

It's hard. I miss my Python.

I don't earn credits hand over fist so I tend to get forced back into smaller ships when I loose a big one.

As much as I'd like to have big ships, the learning curve is really steep. Not going to stop me from dreaming big but small ships represent something I can invest in and have when things go so far sideways it's not even funny. I lost the conda a second time and felt really screwed when luck would have it, I had a half built vulture I was toying with. Invested back in that and built myself back up.

Theoretically I could sell my entire fleet and pick up the Conda again but I learned my lesson the hard way the first time. I'm keeping the smaller ships for backup when that thing inevitably blows up again.

Playing around with a Viper MkIV atm. First time I played with it, I wasn't impressed but I've been able to get some engineering done on one this time. If it doesn't work out I might go Vulture, at least until the Chieftain drops. Now that I've seen the ship and its loadout, I'm interested.

I haven't done much combat in Elite, but some of the most exciting has been in an Eagle. Not much special, no engineering really, just the flying and shooting.

The Vulture, I only did an hour or two combat in that ship. Also great fun. The Viper I need to experiment with someday, never used it in combat.

I loved it back in the first few months of release. Now with the adjustments made to the game, I'm not sure how fun it is without engineering. You can't quite solo big ships the same way we used to be able to as far as I know.

I understand what OP means. However, I think part of it is also due to the combat rank. The higher combat rank you have the more tougher pirates and npc opponents are generated. I'm fine with tougher smaller npc ships while engineering my smaller ships, because I'd think it's sensible and plausible the npcs would have access to engineers too, upgrade their own ships over time, and would have likely improved their combat skills with a higher combat rank.

Yea, dealing with multiple higher ranked targets in an unengineered Keelback wasn't ideal. Not that I wanted to deal with them, but the missions generated them. Funny enough, they weren't even generated when I went back to my Cutter. Game said, "Oh back in the God ship? Thanks but no thanks." [haha]

The Viper III is a sweet little ship. I am sorry I sold mine when I bough the IV. Been thinking on buying another one. My IV is a beast in CZ now that she has engineered thrusters and power distributor.

I own a Courier but still trying to learn how to best use her.

Just don't think some folks understand how fun these smaller ships can be.

I like all the ships for what they are except maybe the Type-9 (love the Type-10 when I'm in it and not looking at the spoiler).

I've spent a ton of time in a Viper III lately!

My latest project ship is a ViperIV. The big ships are all business to me; I get in smaller stuff for fun.

In a sense I really understand how the OP feels, almost for me as if the Engineers have kinda ruined the game a bit. Take an already overpowered or otherwise unbalanced vessel and make it even more so with engineers.

I miss my old FAS that is still present on XB1 account, as well as the DBX and Courier. Man, I can remember when the Courier was practically unstoppable in a CZ/Res site due to its handling and ungodly shields.

If it weren't for the rank grind for my cutter and vette, I woulda reset and I still might, just waiting to play with the chieftain.

I feel a bit similar. I really want to fly a Viper but the DPS just isn't there.

IMO the Viper and the Eagle just aren't the glass cannons they should be. SLF has taken that role when it's the SLF that should have much less damage.

To try and breathe a little more life into the game for me, I periodically decide to go back to some of the smaller and less/not engineered ships. Let's just say it hasn't gone well. I just did a Keelback yesterday and it went well for a while, until it didn't. The defense and firepower just wasn't there for me for the things I'm used to doing. Also add in the fact that engineers has basically made me feel like I need to engineer every ship. It turns into this thing were I start screwing with myself because I miss the firepower, the defense and the comfort of my decked out Cutter and I certainly don't want to grind out more mats to deck out more ships than I already have. So here I am, back in the Cutter, sticking my nose up at things like the T10 and the soon coming Chieftain, because why bother? Sort of a sad place to be in when I think about it.

If you have experienced something similar, how did you break away from it? I used to love the Viper when that was the fighter to be in, then the Vulture, then the FAS, trying to go back to them now... like I said, why bother?

In my opinion. Others will say different and thats fine. But i feel the engineers ruined alot of things in elite. They made it so non engineered ships are useless. And as soon as you've had engineered ships or been up against engineered ships you feel like you cant have non engineered ships ever again.

Ahhh bigger is not better. Once you get over the big ship fetish smaller ships become much more fun. Try an iCourier. Stick oversized thrusters on it and yes some dirty drives. Or an iEagle with that gorgeous top hard point.

I'd recommend a Vulture. Small, but still packs a punch. You may still want to engineer the power plant and distributor though, so you can fit the more power hungry weapons.

Exactly this. It is so incredibly maneuverable, it's just a ton of fun to fly after cruising around in a lumbering behemoth.

I just can't get into most medium ships for combat. I'm kind of like you TS - I just don't see the point. Most PVPers fly medium ships but I just feel handicapped - like "why am I doing this?" In a vulture though, I know why I'm doing it - for the SPEEEEED. I also enjoy busting out a REALLY fast ship from time to time - I have an engineered courier that flies 800+ in battle mode and is great fun.

The keelback is a bit of a pig I'm afraid... if you want to have fun in a small unengineered ship, use either an Eagle (II or III), Viper Mk.III or a DBS for combat, or a Cobra Mk.III or Viper Mk.IV for mission running. If you want to limit your engineering, then limit it to thrusters; you can then have fun in a racing eagle or give the more sluggish ships the oomph they need (for example, the Viper Mk.IV is ok when not engineered, but very nice indeed with even DD3 thrusters)

It's only £10 for a whole new account with horizons, on sale - or whatever it is full price if you're feeling generous to FDev, and take it down a different path maybe? You might even consider joining one of the player factions that does stuff like canonn - or fuel rats, I'm sure they would appreciate a veteran player like yourself.

But on the topic - this was one of the things FDev were warned about with introducing any sort of "arms race" style gameplay. You either do it or forgo it totally, the halfway house just leaves players feeling what your feeling now - like you can't really experience the game and "enjoy it" without them.

A new account is about the only option here.

The main thing I miss when flying a smaller ship is the number of slots - both internal & external. I like a ship that can put it's hand to anything I'm likely to want to do, and that's just easier with a big ship.

This wasn't how it was supposed to be though - each ship was supposed to have a different role - to some degree, and engineering allowed players to blur the lines too much imo.

I own a Cutter, Corvette, T10 and two Anacondas but still love the small ships.

I just bought my first DBS yesterday, what a blast that little thing is!
And the sounds are hilarious!

I find I often fly other ships like my PvP Cutter if I have been in them a long time. It honestly takes me hours to adjust to the new flight model of new ships. But I always end up going back to my Cutter, simply because my wing needs the ship more than a tiny one.

First thing I suggest is flying your fighters while your crew ranks up flying the Cutter. This will quickly adjust you to an agile flight model. Next, try changing your Cutter loadout to add more fixed weapons. After that, I would go with a similar fixed setup in a smaller ship. I use a very similar loadout on my FDL and Cutter, both aimed at PvP.

Ask yourself what are your priorities in a ship.
