Who liked the planetary surfaces

They look awesome... from afar.

Up close it didn't seem to be that much different, but I guess that up close it has more to do with topography than anything else. Let's see in Q4 the surface improvements, together with the hinted improvement in (well, first introduction of) exploration gameplay...

To my understanding they will do a complete makeover of the surfaces in Q4, what is changed now is the colour map.

The colours are a improvement for sure, now they really need to work on surface stuttering, texture improvements and add more detailing in general.

Still looking like playdough terrain most times imo.

We haven't seen enough of them yet but it's the part of this deployment I'm looking forward to the most.

I've been spending a lot of time surface prospecting for materials in the past month so this will make a big difference.

i would say a giant stride in the right direction.......... but Q4 is where i am really excited for planetary surfaces, and TBH i think i will hold off any wild exploration trips till then.

i have plenty to do in and around the bubble for the next 10 months or so.

I am really looking forward to exploration again now. Thought they looked superb.

Me too. Fantastic job by FD here.

Though I'm curious to see :

1) texture at surface level.
2) If material finding makes more sense (i.e. meteorites in craters...) and if finding geysers became less of a PITA.

Does anyone know if they are planning to sort out the terrain normalisation in this update? It took a massive downgrade, especially noticeable if you run everything on ultra. It currently looks like low resolution mesh, I appreciate they had to make changes due to SRV's getting stuck, but the current result makes many planets look bland, many of my bookmarked Mountain ranges and Canyons are now unrecognisable.

Anyway, the terrain textures look excellent, definitely a step in the right direction.

I think they looks really great, way better and realistic than what we have now. As a explorer I stopped playing some time ago, now I have a reason to go back and hunt for some pretty screenshot opportunities.

I thought they looked MUCH better than the boring beige and bubble gum worlds we have at the moment.

It didn't look like they have quite the level of surface detail we had in 2.0. but I can't tell for sure. Will have to actually land with an SRV to be able to reach an informed opinion.

Hey! What a concept! ;)

Is there anyone who has screenshots from the close up surfaces?

Only shots from the last live stream. Tbh the planets surfaces already look very good up close on ultra, the current issue is more with the colours and variation, and the visuals from high altitude.

From what has been shown in the streams they do look good from orbit, but less impressive close up. Until they rework the terrain (Q4) I doubt we'll notice much difference at surface level.

Yeah, that's Q4 update right? Surface scatter objects and so on. [up]

We should definitely notice the color variations on surface level, so that will definitely be an improvement when cruising around in either ship/srv/slf. It'll be nice to see the change, hopefully subtly, as you cross over landscapes composed of different material types. As for other things that may be improved with the new coloration is Vulcanism. It may be that various types of geysers/fumaroles and perhaps even organic sites will have various colorations that match their chemical makeup. They may seem like small changes but the colorization could make a whole "world" of a difference, add to that what is to come from here through Q4 and we could have some awesome looking places to explore, both on the ground in and among the stars.

You know what would really knock this out of the park?

Tectonic activity and actual volcanic eruptions.

To feel the ground shake, or even see it open up in places, to see torrents of magma launch into the air or flow along... would be spectacular.
