Galnet Audio: The most useless thing in the whole game?

whats wrong with it, if it reads me galnet while I can proceed playig instead of being stuck in the galnet screen thats fine.
also, dunno if TTS is so much devlopment time, most already exists as a black box tool. Funny will be if and how they implemented specific names and their phonetics to not soudn weird.

Nothing "wrong" with it per-se, it's just fluff. Pointless fluff at that.

Can't wait for Galnet to read me the current top sellers in the system, word for word...

GalNet is great for when you don't want to read. You can fly around while listening to the news. They should use this to turn NPC text to speech.

Christ you are naive beyond belief, look what happened to Holome, straight into the store went costumes and other tat for dressing up your dolls.

Last time I checked I never felt forced to buy anything for my avatar and I got my cool sunglasses for free.

Also yeah, devs shouldn't implement voice synth to give voice to various parts of the game which are now presented as text. If they sell voice packs at side - woah, more power to them. I love default ship voice btw. No issues. But if there's alternative which I will like too, I will buy it.

It is a barter. Devs give us cool feature, enable cool tech for betterment of the game - and create nice venue for them to get some additional money to do cool things.

Everybody wins.

Last time I asked they plan to. It will be a long haul though, as it is quite challenging to give voice synth voices emotions.

well, the ycna furthe rutilise galnet if it gets read into a galnet with news ticker that reads stuff like recent hotsots for trading and thargoid attack locations and so on. it could lay the foudnation for some amazing future additions.

It could, yes. But I'll bet you a Cutter that this will get no more significant dev time spent on it until Q1 2019 at the earliest.

FINALLY! Someone sees my point!
Have a Rep, good sir.

Nobody would use Galnet Audio after a few tries, I can guarantee this. Well, except if you are illiterate. But if you are, what the hell are you doing here playing videogames? Go to school and learn how to read. Seriously, it's a great skill to have.

Sometimes I get that peope expertise is not really their field and try an opinion.
As an IT and part time programmer I actually cringe when I read some stuff.

For example. There's this wide assumption that in order to achieve this Text-To-Speech a lto of resources were wasted.

Honestly I don't think so. The Audio department is taking charge of making new ship sound and tweaking what's there. I'll expose myself and say, moreover, that the tech was already in development since we started hearing ATC (Air Traffic Controller- or Space TC, if so you wish).

That said, once you teach to read to a program you can apply everywhere.

So, it's not like they had to program it to read Galnet. More likely it was the pet program of a developer for a little gift to players (the ATC/STC reading out the CMDR name, Callsign or Ship ID) that they managed to apply to the Galnet.

Theorycrafting? Yeah maybe, but I've seen sort of this stuff happening first person... and in anycase how's my theorycrafting worse than nayseyers' ones?

I think the Galnet Audio is a great layer of polish. It adds life to cockpit while flying. I listen to the radio all the time in my car. This feels the same. I read the Galnet whenever I log in so see what’s happening and there have been events I would have missed in there.

It has a great potential for delivering story to players. It was a pleasant surprise to see this coming.

Its not a waste of time, you can buy the voices yourself for windows text to speech, they're pretty damn good to. Was going to ask for a discount if i already owned the english one but had to do a double take.

Also, I'm pretty sure (nearly) everyone is familiar with the Radio in the car?
You don't listen to it all the time everytime, but you definitely prefer to have it in case you want something to listen to rather than not.

Apologies for derailing the thread slightly everyone but I did just want to respond to that.

I have no issue with Frontier making additional money from cosmetics (especially seeing as the Beyond stuff we've seen is all free, it's win win - those who like this stuff and/or who want to support Frontier financially can do so, those who don't are equally free not to).

What I do have an issue with are those who suggest that Frontier are some kind of cynical money grabbing corporate monster (which I'm afraid your "big picture ... cash cow" remarks suggested to me - apologies if that was not your intention).

I believe that Frontier genuinely care about this game, that they're enthusiastic fans of it who continue to think about it in their spare time, that their motives for making it are first and foremost because they thought it would be an amazing thing to do, and that the need to find ways to pay themselves a wage and fund what is now a largish company with sizeable running costs is the means and not the end.

Oh, and it's not pure naivety, I know the kind of company I describe exists because I work for one (and we don't do anything nearly as cool as game development).

You're joking right? You can't be serious in attempting to vilify something that is totally optional.

If you are serious, all I can say is WOW! Get some professional help.

"Hey this guy has tried out this feature for a few years, while I have no idea how it works in practice because I only had a glimpse of it in a showcase livestream.

Let's straight out insult him"

Galnet audio is just another CQC module, sounds awesome on paper, and *it is* awesome, but joystick in hand it's so unpractical and intrusive it's not worth the effort of implementing it in the first place.

That said, tts could be expanded to other areas of the game, so maybe this is just a first stage or something.
Not that fdevs have such a big reputation for expanding their previously released modules, especially if nobody is using them anymore, but still ;)

Oh oh oh, slow down there cowboy, you're going to need a source before saying something like that ;)

Not unless you'd like to hear something like this half the time anyway. I think very few people want that, especially those who played the first iteration of X Rebirth and remember how terrible is to have a npc with bad voice acting talking to you all the time. But this is not a problem though, I bet very few people here played that game since, from what I read around here lately, I gather the average forum user in this forum played probably less than 10 games on their pc in the last 5 years, if even that.

And, by the way, that youtuber uses a way more expensive version of the Ivona tts, the one Fdevs is using is Salli, which is like half the price and one of the oldest versions available. Just so we're clear about how unnatural tts sounds and how it doesn't fit for anything else than a computer voice.

Pssst - that's not my quote.
