Who liked the planetary surfaces

I flew to that same crater in the current build and took some screenshots to compare. The difference is night and day. I'll post them when I get back to my home computer.

Excellent thanks.

(Just to be clear I’m not saying the changes aren’t great - just that I couldnt see too much difference on the stream).

I am very excited about the improvements!!! :)

The new coloring and resulting vistas that Ed flew over looked amazing to me. The "white sands" off to the side in the distance from where he half-landed reminded me of a long time ago driving trip through the "death valley" area on the way to Las Vegas. I saw stark "whitish sands" in the distance where my current surroundings were dark and beigelike and wanted to get to that area which were many miles away actually.

That confuses me honestly. The difference is huge IMHO.

In 2.4 that same spot would most likely be one color, some shade of beige no doubt, whereas in the beta stream you could count no less that three different colors from that single spot, but moreso there are gradients between the colors introducing even more variety into the terrain. The actual terrain itself might be the same between 2.4 and 3.0 but the new coloring is doing a superb job of highlighting said terrain into someting much more than a singular beige wash was ever capable of.

The beta planet looked 100% more interesting visually to me than anything in 2.4 does today. If you truly don't see that, then I hate to repeat what someone else said, but are you sure you aren't colorblind and you just don't know it? Not trying to be sassy or sarcastic, I'm honestly asking the question...

Check your screen settings, colours might be turned way down.

I wonder if we'll ever see some grey surfaces. From a gut feel I would expect a lot more grey planets in our galaxy (maybe even the standard color for most systems) but as far as I'm aware I've seen none so far. [where is it]

The moon is grey. Is it grey in the game? I can't remember.

At 720p and a kiloton of compression I couldn't tell what it looked like.
.
Just my answer. From orbit it looked great, simply for being more colorful. When hovering over the surface, i found it to look very washed out, but as said, it's based on lower resolution and compression. Actual Feedback can be given once we actually saw it at full quality. :)

Alright, with the obvious caveat that my before images are going to look much more crisp by virtue of being taken on highest settings and not grabbed from a blurry stream, here's my comparison album: https://imgur.com/a/H3UIf

Just focus on the coloration. Also embedding the images below.

The new planet textures is one of the features I look most forward to in beyond Q1.
I realy like what I've seen so far, it's gonna make space so much more vivid to fly and drive around in.

A very nice appetizer for what they're planning to do in Q4 I think.

That's a VERY good compare ! Thankyou +1 [yesnod]

They look awesome... from afar.

Up close it didn't seem to be that much different, but I guess that up close it has more to do with topography than anything else. Let's see in Q4 the surface improvements, together with the hinted improvement in (well, first introduction of) exploration gameplay...

I believe real on-surface improvements have yet to be added at a later time.
FDev did show the concept art for this a while back, and it is part of Beyond.

That one looks fantastic. That gray planet could be favorably compared with a real photograph of our moon. The fact that the surfaces are so much more detailed now really helps to sell the true-to-life scale of these bodies.

Yes, they seem to taken them to next level. Planets has never been this good, this is not bug fix, this is proper improvement.

I am really looking forward to exploration again now. Thought they looked superb.

They do look better from what little I have actually seen, though being on console will mean I get a somewhat less impressive translation, but anything is better than that hateful pasty beige cookie dough planets. Fer anything really impressive, well Im honestly just happy to see something change 'now' as opposed to a year ish...makes what Im currently doing so much easier which is grinding empire rank and using engineers...dont laugh but I was shocked by how many materials I actually already had and didnt realize...

Im actually more or less avoiding the forums entirely because I am grinding and playing more lately than Ive done in years, 6 hours a day sometimes 7 days a week because...Im motivated by what Im seeing and its giving me goals like a T10 to beagle point sorta thing...obviously such things do not grow on trees and one has embraced the grind to make such things a reality.

I do not complain about grind...I enjoy it sometimes but one has to be in the right frame of mind. The improvements to exploration and what Im seeing...thats what motivated me.

And best of all...Im in open 100% of the time now cos Im in a dbe with dirty drive whatever and Im now faster than they are anyway.

The point? Checked the forum...its like the river of slime from Ghostbusters only its not slime, its a river of salty tears fer which I care little for atm, which is possibly quite beneficial cos I know Id enjoy it too much and Im lovin this game too much to talk moan about it...I might be in danger of having to admit I was wrong after all and my skepticism was wrongly placed...proof enough perhaps on its own merit by the fact Im playing again...and then some.

This is about the one cool happy thread that gets one of me little rants before back to the grindstone...cya in the black cmdr ^

For me, those new planetary textures are one of the biggest reasons why I’m looking forward to Beyond so much (the other reason being the Chieftain).
