Dropping out of SC into Planetary Rings

Hi all,

Quick question:

Is it possible to drop out of SC into a ring system anywhere I like or only at Extraction Sites marked up on the HUD?

If yes how do you do it?

On my way to Beagle 2 i overshot (oooerrr missus) and as i was coming around, passed over the rings, they looked fantastic and i wanted to go into them for a closer look but my PROX alert started flashing and I baulked.

Possible? What are your recommended flightpaths/speeds etc

Cheers,

GC

Only at Extraction Sites.

Yes, just slow down as you get close to the ring and press the super cruise button (default 'J' I think) twice. You can drop out anywhere in a system and the full ring can be explored.

You drop out of Supercruise anywhere - if you are locked onto an extraction site and within 1,000KM then you'll drop out at that site.

One thing I love to do when showing people the game is to skim the rings in SC and you can see the individual rocks resolving out of the rings - that's damned impressive LOD'ing if you ask me.

You can drop out anywhere you like in the game. Simply press the same button you have mapped for entering Frame Shift/Hyperspace again. Alternatively you can just fly straight in to them and you will drop out automatically...your ship might take some damage though if you are going to fast. ;)

Cool thnx. but what if there is no extraction site - like the ring near Beagle. How would I approach close enough so that im not in normal flight for 1000KM!!?

Yikes, might downgrade to a Sidey before trying it then!

What do you mean? Just fly straight towards the rings and when you get close enough exit frameshift. You will then find yourself just a couple of km above/below the rings. :)

Not a troll post...your ship will shutdown frameshift if it gets to close to a major mass like a star/planet/moon or rings for that matter.

Yup, confirming this had happened to me once or twice (landed me in the rings some 250km away from the extraction site).

Yeah, it's not dangerous at all. When you are close you will see the Proximity alarm go off. Get a little close and you will then see the blinking red light of "Oh crap, I'm gonna die!". Drop out of SC now and you should be fine. Or alternatively just keep flying and let the game do it for you.

sweet. emergency brakes. but would they dump me in the ring? or am i still left with a 30min IRL boost to the ring bodies?

You can stop anywhere you choose.
But there are minimum distances around massive objects such as stars, planets, ring systems etc... that you can approach before your FC drive will not be able to sustain its field and you drop out of SC.
That distance varies proportionally with the mass of the object. Bigger objects and you get dropped out further away.

If you want to get close to the rings for a look then you can do it like this. Or you can throttle back to 30km/s and see where you get dragged out.
Pressing the supercruise key twice will bring you out of SC at the location of your choosing.
But be warned that if you drop out when travelling too fast you will probably take damage and have control issues upon SC exit.

As you approach the rings in SC, just throttle down and keep going toward them. You'll drop out right next to them.

If you see a ring system with nice gaps, you can actually SC through or along the gaps.

As I said above...just a couple km above or below. I'll take you just a couple of seconds to fly into the ring if you boost.

This of course depends on where you actually exit frameshift so just get as close as possible.

As others have stated you can either hit the SC key twice and it'll drop you out at whatever point you hit the key at, or "crash" into the belt and you get dropped anyway.

Of course you may have trouble getting to rings which are very close to the planet as the current SC mechanic won't allow you to fly that close to the surface (not sure if that is possible given orbital mechanics governing rings).

Try it and see in an empty Sidewinder to be sure though :)

Massive thanks for this. I'LL give it a try tmrw and grab some postcard shots for you all on this thread!
