Does anyone else feel like Beyond is a graceful exit strategy ?

I think Frontier has done extremely well with the limited resources they've had. ED could have ended up been a one-shot. If they didn't have the success of PC and ED for PS4, I'd be worried about the future of ED. JWE could potentially give ED a big recognition boost. The kids and new audiences who play JWE if it turns out to be a hit alongside the new movie, will see the frontier logo and wonder why is the background in "space" and why is it called "Frontier" with a planet behind the "F"? And oh, they find out there was this space game all along, the flagship title of Frontier, and the base combo (ED + Horizons & Beyond) is only $10-$15 and try it out and wowz, a million or more copies sold as more discover the wonders of the ED universe simulation. And with that outcome, it all but guarantees expanded continued future development /w ground-breaking spacelegs and atmospherics within ED's massive scope.

I would be interested in that post/vid if you have a link.

Thanks

It was a forum thingy. FD had the expo end of last year, and only discussed the Beyond element. They arent sure about the timelines for [redacted], so they completely left it out. So people with a Lifetime Expansion Pass freaked out and assumed they got ripped off, the games was dying etc. So someone from FD came to the forums and simply said: "Hold yer horses, this isnt the end of ED, stuff is coming, others have to pay and you'll get it for free.". Then a new crapstorm emerged:"Why did FD not tell us this sooner? Why are they sneakily making paid-for content? Are they ripping us of? Did they make a pact with the Devil or Putin?" Then FD said:"Screw this." and never responded again.

True story.

Here you go

Query
I think it's the right way to go ; the yearly season model just does dwindle the player base. Still I have a bitter taste i my mouth when I think of the 165€ I cashed in for the LEP, when I could have got Horizons and be good until Q4 2018 - at the very least. When I bought LEP in August 2015, the (10y)plan was one extension per year, and even then the added-value of the LEP was a gamble : it would be covered after about three extensions/seasons. Now we know that Horizons lasts for three years... FDev should really seriously consider some perks, or partial refunds by now.

Response
Hey Astral! This is a very reasonable and understandable post. Hopefully I can put your mind at ease a little.

In addition to all the content talked about at Frontier Expo, we also have some pretty cool things in the works which will be available to purchase. We're not ready to talk about them just yet so we can't give you any details but rest assured that the lifetime expansion pass owners will be looked after and will be getting their hands on premium content as part of their lifetime expansion pass before the end of 2018 and the Beyond series of updates.
I hope that helps,

Zac

Okay, yeah I seem to remember that. Being the only game I play anymore I am interested in where it is going.

Dont hold your breath, I dont expect them to make any solid commitments before the next expo. This summer we have the grand release of JWE, which must be timed exactly with the movie, and the two smaller ED patches. Any big reveal will come at the expo.

Serious question: how do you find this stuff (it was of course the correct quote btw)? The search function sucks more than this...

Just need to drag it out another 4 years and the fanboys will have their "10 yr plan" chants vindicated!

hehe, fair enough. One of the cool thing of this generation of spacegames is that everyone feels vindicated all the time by everything. :p

haha, "dragging" out 4 more years sounds more like the cig-arrets 'project' which is on bare life support, than ED which actually has 7 more years left for the 10-year.

No comment. :)

OK... [weird]

Honestly curious if they made some sort of further announcements along these lines. "Premium content," could be just about anything we can optionally buy or have already bought with the LEPs, like mini DLC or something. Expansions would be nice, of course, and I have no reason to really think Frontier don't plan on having more of them. I just haven't heard one way or the other.

If they are abandoning ED than i must say they are idiots!
ED in VR is masterpiece not to mention unused potential game have.

If the definition of graceful is tripping over your own feet, comically rolling down the hillside getting passed by run-away cheeses and women in long frocks piloting steam driven perambulators, giggling all the while until finally coming to a rest having lost your trousers only to quizzically inquire to the gathered witnesses, "Did we win?"

Then, yeah.

yea there gonna just ditch this project they have built the entire company around cause what?

They may make Elite: Deadly and charge full price for it again. ....I know I'd pay for it :D
As I said, micro-transactions will continue and bring in dollars for them. And that will continue to fund small additions.
But huge game changing ones? I don't know.

Well, technically, if it really was a supposed "ten year plan" from the start then they have about 3-4 years remaining. Development started in 2012. And we know what 2018 will bring (Beyond). So this is what we have after 6+ years... Framework, maybe. Where's the house? Seriously, there never was and there isn't a "10 year plan". That is pure fan-fiction. But what is real is the 6+ years of development made so far, and look what we have. Doesn't seem anywhere close to DB's vision and marketing hype.

OP you're probably more right than folks are willing to accept.
