More of the same? Like 2.1 that utterly destroyed the pretty sound vanilla experience?

I said it before and I'll say it again: If you didn't like Elite at 1.0 you will not like it in version 3.4 or 42. Every update will be more of the same, no amount of work and time will make the core of the game any different. Yes, they will adress and rework some of the core features, but that just means that they will be more polished and the old ugly placeholders will be replaced with shiny new looks. But at it's core it will still be the same old mechanic. The BGS will not suddenly become completely dynamic and full of life. NPCs will not suddenly become completely realistic and persistent, each and everyone of them with their own job and going to sleep. You will not be able to walk around space stations any time soon (and if it will be possible sooner than I expect it will probably disappoint a lot of people). Exploration will not be changed into something completely different. They will add some stuff to find and a few new scanners, but that will just be more of the stuff what we already have. Since NPCs will never be completely persistent there will never be true bounty hunting. They will not add an epic stroy line. And Elite will also never be Eve. Prepare to get disappointed.
Now for me the good thing is, since I already like the game it can only get better.

I did like Elite 1.0? - I understood much of its mechanics were supposedly "place holder" and the game was going to be built upon and expanded...
I did not expect "sudden" improvements and changes. But I did expect sensible design choices and design choices that would at least attempt at some reasonably impressive progression to gameplay depth and mechanics. Since release I really am hard pressed to think of such design choices. Wings and Planetary Landings comes to mind as impressing me, but too much else confused the heck out of me (what did CQC and Multi-Crew for all the development hours throw at it add to the game).
Anyway, as I said, Q4 we have Exploration and Mining V2. I see no reason why some long overdue depth and connected and layered gameplay cannot be achieve with this... My fear is, there's simply not the will to go there, and we'll just get more paper thing point and click. Fingers cross at least we get son-of-planetary-landings with the Q4 DLC in the shape of a truly impressive atmospheric landings (albeit lifeless)...
Like I care for "most".

I think it must be clear by now that a lot of people are upset by the effect that engineers has had on the game so I don't think you can use the word "most".
I loved Elite 84 by the way and I also disagree with the OPs premise.

I am trying to find out which effect the Engineers had on the game since I just completely ignored them and wasn't affected at all.

Yup, same opinion here. I loved E: D from 1.0 through 2.0 but started downright hating it past 2.1.
I respect the fact that there are players still having a blast in E: D currently, but please accept the fact that there are others who play the game totally differently, and whose experience was literately destroyed by additions which some might still consider small or inconsequential.
Professional reviews are actually quite good for a niche game. It gets 80/100 on metascore. Player reviews are not so good but most of them are from people who are too stupid to launch the game or played 1500 hours and are burned out. Reviews are even better than PUBG, which is the most successful game of all times.
I'm holding out for a full-on sequel after Beyond personally. They learnt a lot from Elite: Dangerous but by now there are so many interlocking parts and legacy decisions complicating things it would be best to simply start over and add new features from the ground-up rather than botching it onto an incredibly complex system.
Bring on Elite: Deadly!
