Commodore 64 mini

As someone who had the 64,128, zx spectrum and Amiga I’m not really looking into a time wrap regarding technology.

If I should go back in time it should be for real :D

Owning both NES and SNES I can say I prefer playing on the original over the minis. However, having all the favourite games on one console is very convenient. It's also cheaper as many games are super expensive nowadays and hard to come by.

An early look at the thing:

Personally, I'm not hugely interested in this. I think I'm too young for it, although I did play some games back in the day.
In Sweden this costs between 90 and 100 euros.

I knew I've seen those Jaguar eyes right at the beginning of the video.

Whaaaa.....???? What's the use then. Just playing the builtin games only?
Another overpriced ARM board with an emulator pre-installed. ;)

As an 80's kid...
Thank heavens for technological progress!
I grew up in the 1980s too, but (thankfully) without computers. So I have a pretty non-rose-tinted view of the early 8 bit home computer age. It took until the mid 1990s before I got to compare the golden age (where almost all currently know genres and gameplay concepts were defined) with the 8 bit infancy era, where everyone was trying to copy arcades, struggling with severe hardware limitations and user interfaces. There were a few rare gems released for 8 bit platforms first, but most them were ported or remade for better computers later - these are not going to appear in emulator cash-grabs.

The SID chip is still one of the most amazing pieces of tech.

IF only

Yup. I was just about to go fetch my SNES Classic Mini that's just arrived at a local post office when I saw that a C64 mini is in the making. :)

Having played many C64 games in my early youth, I can't say I recognise many of the included games in the mini version.

From the website:
"PLUS – Full sized, fully working version also coming in 2018 as well!" :D

Cool!

Reminds me why I stopped playing on my C64 - couldn't afford the Disk Drive and had lots of issues with the Tape Drive loading large programs :-(

One area i think they could have a worth (old 8 bit computers) is with young children. Sure you can offer your kids Minecraft (on PC), Zelda/Mario (on Nintendo), but it is a very real parenting problem to not have your kids play maybe unsuitable stuff too young (maybe their friends has CoD at home etc).

I had been keeping my old Atari 800XL for my kids, but sadly time worked against it and last time i booted it up the 5.25 Floppy Drive was not working properly. Damn shame as i had a massive collection of games for it, all mostly suitable for young minds too :(

I do however have some old consoles and child-friendly games for them, and these 'mini' reboots could fill those kind of gaps if they had the right games (which most seem not to sadly).

So 'Emulation' it is going to have to be, where my old games and hardware no longer function well.

There are some violent games on the C64..

with that famous poster...

'suitable' games. And the ability of the hardware to render the levels of realism we see in games today is what i was also talking about. Even the most violent C64 game looks tame compared to 'normal' PC or console games today.

No, it's not.

Looks like a repackaged copy of the Gamebase64 releases, which while also not technically legal, is at least not charged for.

Yep, got my kids (12 and 10) a SNES mini for xmas, and they love that thing.
