Question for forum veterans

I still can't figure out why the associate with an only half-way decent Eagle's song about the dark side of the American dream and excess in America. Most folks I meet around here aren't even Americans.

Because it's a slightly more charitable metaphor than "Roach Motel".

What are the most frequently requested features that players ask FDEV for?

So I assume you're not asking for our own lists but rather, as people who've been around a long time, what do we see being asked for again and again.

So yeah, people have already pretty much covered this. In descending order of frequency I'd say:

space legs
planetary landings
more "love" for the explorers
more "things to do", especially down on planets
orrery map (and older request that's raised less frequently now)
planetary bookmarks (a newer request that's becoming more popular)
more SRV variants

NB, the OP has asked for "most frequently requested features" not "features requested by most players"
The 2 are VERY different.

probably a more accurate summation than mine.... ;)

People talk an awful lot about "deep gameplay" and "innovative game mechanics," some very loudly. Yet none of the talk translates to sales for games that do provide such innovation, even games that have been praised for how well they did it. Which is one of the reasons I think such arguments tend to get raised eyebrows from dev studios and little further consideration.

Yeah I'm aware of that. It's an irony in and of itself.

It's almost like people calling for such things have absolutely no idea what it is they want. They're just trying to use corporate speak to sound sophisticated and essentially ask for "more" without defining what it is they really want. See Jim Sterling's 'Rich Dark Roast Coffee".

Elite does offer deeper gameplay but it's often hidden in plain sight. People tend to miss it. Case in point, everyone wants more advanced Trade Network gameplay because they're frustrated with the 'difficulty' of being unable to find and make a profit on common market commodities.

I figured out the economy system on day six. The information is already RIGHT THERE, people just refuse to look for it.

The new trade network I'll reserve judgement on and say it's nether a good or bad update because I don't know how it will work until I see it. I do think it's a little unnecessary since all the information is already right there but if people need it to be thrown up in their faces with big flashing neon signs, alright then. I'll give it a try and see if it's a worthy addition and ignore it if it's pointless and doesn't already add to the information I have.

If it does make the more difficult to find commodities easier to find such as government specific items, HE suits which are consumed by the very systems that produce them, and explosives, then I think it would be an excellent addition. See? Not that hard to define what it is you want.

I've already made my case in Elite for the complaints of lacking in "interactive gameplay" and narratives. Won't rehash that here.

There is however no 'perfect game' and the disgruntled simply need to accept that. I play multiple games of multiple genres and I'm much happier for it. If I'm feeling like a certain mechanic. I have a game that scratches that itch and come back to Elite when I need my sandbox spaceship fix.

Moon cheese, space loach bobblehead, something for explorers to do, something for multiplayers to do, and for FD to fix the game.

x.

I agree with some of what you say, however, when i say i want a more complex trade system... what i mean is.

right now i can for instance, go to a system, and (so long as it is not on thrudds or what ever) trade imperial slaves all day without fail one way, and then maybe bring say, machinery back, and make a nice profit. the supply never dries up

there is no reason at all for me to trade anything else, i can just sit all day at the top of the pyramid and never worry about the 100 other commodities because they are too low earning.

however what i would like is, for the top of the pyramid to be much more controlled.

if i rock up to a system and say "I will take 600 tons of your finest imperial slaves please" I want them to say, sorry sir we do not know you, you have not helped us, we do not have enough for you..... here, have 22 tons and be gone with you.

and i want the same to be true all down the chain.... so, instead what would happen....

the bottom of the pyramid - food from agriculuture - no limits here, I take this to an extraction economy...., sell that and buy a boat load of ore, which i take to a refinery, there i take a boat load of say Aluminium, to a hi tech where they will sell me computers, which i then take somewhere else and then they give me the full amount of imperial slaves which i can then take to agricutural where they will work.

(i am making up a route off top of head here, which may not actually work, but you get my point)

rather than A B A B instead we get A B C D A.

this is for heavy traders only, the smaller ships can still get limited amounts of stuff so do not need to worry so much.
the carrot in all this imo should be FAR larger profits per ton than we have now for the cheaper commodities. (2000 credit profit per ton of grain does not seem much to expect when in high supply to high demand imo)
(thinking logically, when gold etc is essentially unlimited and a ton can be mined in a matter of under an hr, i would imagine a produce which needs to be grown over a period of months,
