Who else would buy die cast ships for display from the frontier store?

It gets mentioned once in a while and my answer is always yes yes yes.

Some of the 3D printed models promised in the KS have made their way into backers' hands (there's a thread in the Private Backers' Forum). They look nice enough but rather fragile. The paint jobs remind me of Airfix kits, actually.

I wish FD would license the ship designs to Eagle Moss so they could produce them in that lovely metallic resin they use for their Star Trek ships. Elite ships would look amazing in this stuff.

Good idea, though proper LEGO ones in the same vein as the franchise ruined by George Lucas would do.

Why are people so keen on plastic? Die-cast says so much more quality. Ok, it might be old fashioned, but at least I'm not asking for it in lead.

Diecast are a little too heavy to be hanging from the ceiling! Might need a trip to the hospital if the fishing line breaks.

There are a few models out there...

Anaconda Ship Looking at their hand painted skills I'd order a non-painted one.

AMT, Monogram, Revell would be great. There are a few Russian companies that make nice plastic aircraft models many other companies don't.

Then there is this company DeAgostini Model Space that makes a $1350.00 ultimate model of the Millennium Falcon. If Frontier could get them interested in Elite ships which one would you spend the big bucks on?

We Elite players are resourceful...I built the Anaconda using the free Lego Digital Designer without having to purchase the Lego parts.

Anaconda Lego Build

Here's a traditional Cobra Mk III I did from scratch. There are quite a few builds out there but getting Lego to buy in won't happen. One designer submitted a perfect build of the Eagle Transporter from the TV series 'Space 1999' but didn't get enough votes for Lego to consider it. I guess timing is everything.

Plastic, in kit form for me... perhaps it may get me back to a hobby I loved before PC's and Xbox's gave me an excuse not to [yesnod]

And for the die-cast folks...the plastic is all about the painting :)

I would love to see this happen, but getting a mainstream product licensed is vey tough let alone a niche product requiring detailed moulds. And the percentage of net sales will be at best 10% for FD. I've no doubt paint jobs will yield a far higher percentage with relatively low design costs.

That said, I would pay into the hundreds for a detailed self build resin kit of any one of the ED ships.

We can only hope.

Frankly I would settle for any officially licensed physical representation of ED ships. Just give us something.

I have that Milennium Falcon kit. Very very cool. Barely started it though, even though I now have all the parts.

Cool! You should build it! I keep thinking about the darn thing. Then I already built a plastic version decades ago when I was really good at airbrush painting then gave it away. Now I have a purchased new 18" version also stored for decades I've never opened.

But if DeAgostini went with the ED Cobra Mk III you know we would both have to buy it! :)

All the Best

Die-Cast would be cool, but I would prefer a plastic model kit I could build myself. I used to be ALL ABOUT the plastic models as a kid. Would be fun to get back into that.

True story: When I first bought ED, my missus had a look at the Frontier store and bought me a "pilot bobblehead" as an xmas present, thinking it was a real thing.

As a collector of diecast model aircraft, I would buy every Elite ship if they were available. I'd even buy multiple versions of ships if they did them in different paintjobs.

I'd also buy plastic models or even get a 3D printed set done if FD made digital models available.

Either of the first two options would be massively costly, but I think FD making 3D printable models available in the store could be a cheap route. You could buy a licence to download the digital files and 3D print one copy of each.

The quality can be had in either die cast or plastic these days so either way for me. Meanwhile you can make Lego versions of the ships. Look them up. There are even plans you can follow if you have the time and spare cash to do it.

AIRFIX - oh yes, I can hear my wife's sighs from here.

If there is a choice, I will always want to make it myself - adds an element of ownership, uniqueness and attachment that just doesn't come from opening a packet, no matter how nice the packet in question.

Scale could be an issue though, at 1:400 scale an Annie would be over a third of a metre long but the Sidey would be just 3.5 centimetres!

Still, I would buy them all and keep them in my bedsit after the divorce.
