Who else would buy die cast ships for display from the frontier store?

Wow, I read years ago on here that Frontier had cancelled those models and were refunding backers.
Didn't realise they've actually gone out now!

I’m figuring if FDev won’t shell out for physical models for their store, someone will get hold of the 3dcg models and do a resin kit. That’s how I got a lot of my Star Trek ships.

They’re kind of a pain to prep, but they’re better than nothing and can be a pretty good size (my USS Prometheus is about 11 inches long at 1/1400 scale).

Why not something like the below - using folding metal to put together the ships:

Wow, how am I only just finding out these things exist? Thanks for the link!

Could be anternative and cheaper method to create and distribute these.
Possibly, although judging from the angry 1* reviews left by the digitally inept I can only imagine the forum salt.

Customers also bought: small tweezers, antiseptic ointment, sticking plasters. :)

Apparently, the 3d models aren't that hard to extract from the game files, see e.g.

However, if you did that and FD didn't like what you were doing, you're going to get yourself into a world of copyright violation suits.

Not me, I don’t have the capability to make resin kits. I just buy ‘em.

That said, there are a lot of resin kits for various sci-fi franchises, and I doubt they were all made with permission. The important thing is to buy them before the people who made them get sued.

Even then, you have to get them through customs before the people who own the copyright notice that these kits exist...

Making and selling replicas of things is not that complicated legally speaking as whatever you make isn't going to be (or can be made not to be) an exact replica. And then it depends on how you market it. Using OEM material to market something is bad but saying "here is a space blaster inspired by Star Wars" is OK providing you aren't advertising it on prime time TV. Just check out ETSY.

Example: here's my 3D Printed Fallout 3 Plasma Rifle. It's as accurate as I can get it (without using actual 3D game files), it's for sale but at over 300 hrs print time I doubt Bethesda is going to get upset.

To be fair to Juniper, the post specifically referenced cutaway models which never saw the light of day. Stephen Usher got a custom painted Cobra model with matching in-game skin by way of compensation, and the last I heard Liqua had requested something similar for the Anaconda but even that might have fallen through. His posts have been infrequent and understandably bitter.

To be honest, I wasn't aware that Stephen Usher had received his models until the link was posted in this thread - they look fantastic. I bet he's well chuffed with them. :)

I was referring to the cutaway models, but I know that Liqua and FD had a back and forth via email some time ago, and had agreed a compromise... guess this might have been it. I wonder if he's received his. I hope so.

Die cast is a terrible quality. I'd rather have a nice hard plastic or resin kit which I could mod with plasticard to add ship kits.

I would definitely buy a few. Depending on price I might buy more than a few. I would like something like this:

That way, it doesn't matter what paint job we have on our ships, it can still represent OUR ships. Thinking about all of the models in the briefing rooms on the Enterprise D.

This. Plus, Bandai would give us moving hardpoints and removable landing gear. Plus my favorite part: no paint or glue needed.
not just no glue, no flasks, no molding errrors. everything is top notch!

altho i have to say.. i paint all my bandai kits :p

Would much prefer AIRFIX models :)

This (and the OP's suggestion) have been mooted by the community since PB. So thanks for resurrecting the topic OP! :)

If FD wanted to earn extra cash for developing ED, this is what I would definitely spend mine on. And let's face it, putting a 1:72 scale Cobra MkIII next to a Spitfire at the same scale would be kinda awesome imo! :)
