Here is the thing though: most people play multiple games, and play games to relax for a few hours a week. Getting good at playing games is not likely to be a source of income for the vast majority of people. Getting relaxed by doing something you enjoy is something the majority seeks to get out.
By moving to the appropriate game mode a person gets to enjoy the game, now, how they want. They have no interrest in becomming better, or cover any eventualities. You see, Elite isn't the only game around, and people have interrests that change over time. If Elite changes in such a way it does not cater to their desires, the players will simply stop playing Elite.
Telling them to get gud doesn't help them. Because being gud has no inherent value to them. People who desire a competitive enviroment to improve their game will gather in games that cater to such desires (see DotA,CS et al). Elite is not a competitive game, and as such the majority of people in it aren't looking for competitive gameplay. If they were, I recon CQC would be a whole lot more crowded.
You seem to be under the impression that possessing great skill at shooting ships in Elite is inherently valuable, or something everybody would want to maximize. I am telling you, that for what appears to be the majority, it is not of paramount importance.
This is why peope consider it annoying when the term gets thrown around, because you are aproaching them from your own mindset of what you want to get out of a game, rather than what they want to get out of the game.
