Would you fly in Open if you could hire NPC escorts?

Always found it curious that there is an artificial expectation that a tradeship should be able to independently endure an assault from a pirate or an assassin.

Armored cars have guards, aircraft carriers have entire battle groups that protect them. Even stagecoaches had the guy with the shotgun.

If you could hire a bunch of npc mercs to protect you while hauling 700 slaves, would you be more inclined to run in Open?

I'm flying in open since dec 14.

Of course I lost some ships to griefers, but for me, this makes the game so great. If i take part at a Cg with a t9 and 400 tons of cargo, my heart is beating heavy till i reach the save station. This feeling is great, wnd it belongs to Ed. Criminal elements are present in real life, too o7

Yes. The sort of mayhem you could potentially get if/when attacked would be hilarious.

But given the way mission rewards seem to be just nerfed, nerfed again, and then given a final shot of nerfissimo for good measure these days, how could hiring a bunch of NPCs ever be cost-justified?

Yeah the mission nerf. That's a great point. The swirling chaos would be great. Have to do some thinking there. Scaled rewards come to mind - but that's another topic.

Escort or no escort, it's still a nuisance I can simply avoid completely by playing solo/private.

Yep.

If I want to fly around in my PvP Corvette all the time with less than a 200t capacity vs my unarmed Cutter in our Aisling Duval private group, I will opt for the latter.

If would be nice to have the ability to launch an NPC fighter squadron from a cargo ship... at least 3 fighters.

I would love to have an NPC flying in formation with me in a large ship, or even just sitting in my cabin to keep me company :) But, unfortunately I can't afford many re-buys so would still not fly in open.

Trade ships are balanced around this, that's why they can mount weapons and launch fighters. Trade ships don't have to be vulnerable to attack when alone, but you might need to sacrifice cargo space if you want to engage in combat.

I'll play in open when there is anything like a realistic (but reasonable) crime and punishment system.

Probably not. Just not that keen on the idea of open.

I get that its more exciting and can fully understand the reason why people enjoy the increased jeopardy of flying in open but its not for me. Though, last night I was flying towards a station with several missions stacked and a hold ram-packed with palladium when I noticed a bunch of hollow scanner markers. Checked my menu and yep, sure enough, I had somehow misclicked and was in open! Cue sweaty palms. Carefully watched one of the markers sliding in behind me. So I made like a brave hero and quickly selected a system to high wake to. Thankfully he headed off elsewhere so I headed in unmolested. Albeit carefully monitoring 2 CMDR ships that were parked in the station.

As for the idea of hiring NPC henchmen. Definitely. Would be fun to have a couple of badass NPC FDL's along for the ride with my cargo-Python!

Flying in Open already with my #2 account. PG for acct1 because of AltF10.

Would love to have NPC crew though, and NPC wings.
