Modes Benefits of Solo Play

Dear Community,

I wanted to make a guide for those wondering about what solo play and open play mean, and why to use one or the other. Well, here it is. Open play is where multiplayer is engaged, and where you play on a shared server. In solo play, you play alone. The reason why I personally prefer is because for exploring, all your hard earned data isn't gone when some terrible space pirate guy comes. For combat, it means being able to track down your enemies without having another bounty hunter working on them too, a matter of both honor and credits. And finally, for trade, you won't be losing a few million credits in cargo.

I hope this clears things up, post questions and comments below.

They tell me that playing in Solo, gives us a better connection etc..

Re-buys basically dictate where I play these days. If I have 5 re-buys I will fly the ship in group or solo. If I have 10, I will fly in open. These days, I only fly in private groups when asked, the rest of the time I am in open.

My sole reason is because I don't care to have other real life players around. I deal with people all day, I don't want to play a social game all. No communicating with anyone, no hi's from anyone, no interdictions, no landing bay congestion, etc.

So many games now are all based on multi-player that it's really hard to find anything worthwhile that's open ended and has a lot to offer that isn't multiplayer based. Elite Dangerous is one of those exceptions, but offers you that option if you want to play with others as well without having you penalized by having to create a new account etc.

That's my sole reason for playing it...

For my safety and safety of other players i play in solo while drunk.

I'm frequently drinking when playing.

I'm frequently in solo.

Benefits for me and other players!

Solo does need a buff though. Ability to hire NPC wingmen would be cool as you can't wing in solo. Would also help in open for lone pilots facing gank squads.

OP seems to me to perpetuate the myth that playing in solo/PG is out of fear or to get an easier game. For those who don't appreciate some kinds of "player interaction" it's actually just to have a better game experience.

Benefits of Solo: when you feel like mucking about in Elite without meeting other players, the option is yours!
Benefits of Private Group: when you feel like mucking about in Elite with like minded players, the option is yours!
Benefits of Open: when you feel like mucking about in Elite with random other CMDRs, the option is yours!

Benefit of the modes: Options! Choices! Freedum! Cookies! Cake! Beach parties!

I didn’t get an invite to this beach party you speak of. Where is it? I love a good beach party.

As simple as this..

This is a falsehood.

The whole server is shared, between modes, platforms, etc. (which is why everything else is shared, including BGS, CG's, commodity prices, stations, etc.)

A players choice of Open, etc. is a flag indicating personal preference towards matchmaking.

Open, means you desire to matched with anyone.

Private Groups, only with people you know.

Solo, you desire to not be matched with anyone.

Indeed and having mode choice is one of the smartest design choices that most online games do not offer.

Main advantage? Not dealing with the idiots and sociopaths. :D

Remember LAN parties? At least then we could choose who we played with. And if someone started acting like a jerk, we could literally throw them out the door. Opening the door first was optional... ;)

Now jerks can hide behind a internet connection with little to no consequences. Why would I play a game with those crumbs? Solo, with an occasional diversion into Mobius to refresh my memory about playing with others, is where it's at for me. YMMV.

I'll see myself out...

I play the game on X-Box and I played in Open for ages - since the Beta release anyway. However, for multiplayer on X-Box you have to have an X-Box Live subscription (similar for PS4). As ED is pretty much the only game I play at the moment, I've let the X-Box Live expire and now play in Solo.
So for console players, there is a real-world financial consideration for playing in Open.

The Modes are brilliant!

For in Solo (and PG), you can choose to not meet the allegedly cool kids who constantly claim they understand the game better than you.

So Solo is the well deserved rest for the weary soul.

There are three main reasons why people choose solo, over PGs or Open.

1) Their ISP is crap, or they don't want to be instanced with someone who has a crappy ISP. This game is primarily Perr to Peer, which means the quality of your multi-player experience is determined by the worst connection in an instance. While Frontier's matchmaking service does a fair job at getting a good online experience, a client/server model would be a lot better at providing a consistent experience.

2) They prefer to play single player games. Not everybody likes multi-player games, after all.

3) They would rather not play with a certain type of player. One type of player need other players to be their content, but are unwilling to return the favor. Personally, I find that kind of player tolerable in small doses, but would shed no tears if I never encounter another one in my life. Others have so little tolerance for that kind of crap that they'd rather play solo than take the stance of ever encountering one.

While I have no beef with solo I prefer open:eek: Although it seems everytime I visit Jamerson memorial there is always a pimple pirate that tries to either ram of shoot me in the mail slot such as this morning[yesnod]
But now and again I play in solo because where I tend to play and call home is outside the city lights of the bubble so I don't see any faces with a pulse:O
The missions and credits are the same but no rude behavior from the pimple patrol. The choice at least is one you can go back and forth from so enjoy the game, play your way and wave if you wonder about Lamgani some day heading to and from a destination Comander:)

I didn’t get an invite to this beach party you speak of. Where is it? I love a good beach party.

Its on an ocean planet, 4546 B. Lots of open water. Relatively safe shallows that are great for diving. Most of the larger predators live in deep water. You'll love it!
