Frontier need a Elite Dangerous Concept Artist (Vehicle & Weapon Specialist)

Can they also recruit someone to make some different powerpants people's pictures? Honestly, years on and we still only have one image for each of these supposedly mightily-powerful peeps. [down]

Why not state spaceships then?

I took 'realistic surfaces' as planet surfaces.

Likely because they are referring to a wide range of vehicles and didn't want to narrow it down, or give away too much of their plans to beady eyed customers such yourself. ;)
A surface could be a number of things; when taken in context of the requirement (vehicle design); then surface is likely relating to the textures and such of the vehicle itself, including as listed targeted wear and damage.

Yes, the context of the sentence does make that pretty clear. It's essentially saying they want someone who is able to convey the narrative of a vehicle (i.e. it's purpose, working life and the conditions it has been used in, etc.) through skillful representation of the resulting wear and damage. In other words not just producing something that looks like it rolled out of a showroom yesterday but actually giving a sense of it being partway through its working life and visually signposting what that will have entailed. The reference to surfaces means the surface of the vehicle.

I'm not disagreeing with you; I'm strongly in favour of more vehicles; but I'm just saying the requirement likely includes spaceships as well. :)

Well a Commander can dream. :)

God help us if the Thargoids deploy ground troops*, the poor old SRV isn't gonna cut it. Deploy unconditional surrender.

* Yeah I know, not happening.

Just a reminder, ED isn't FD's only franchise.

Indeed, but initially the hire is for ED.

Elite Dangerous brings the player a vast host of ships and weaponry which must not only follow the iconic styling already in place but also broaden the Elite visual canon ready for technological developments coming our way in the near future.

While the role is initially focused on Elite Dangerous we fully expect the successful candidate to utilise their keen concept skills on the breadth Frontier’s diverse and growing catalogue of games.

I'd love to see more variety added to the SRV line beyond the "space buggy" we currently have.

Not expecting an Abrams M-1 or anything, but having some purpose-built options would be nice. A combat variation... a "utility" variation (hauling, mining) and perhaps an "exploration" variation that we can utilize for more detailed scanning of planets (improved wave scanner, geological surveying, lifeforms, etc.) would all be welcome.

I get the feeling the holdup with internal development has more to do with game vision and/or balance than it does the ability to create models and graphics. FD is quite capable of pumping out "things", the issue is more likely due to the divisiveness of the community and what everyone wants or doesn't want in ED.

*tosses 2 credits in the bucket*

They could rapidly design and add a heavy armoured SRV, because this doesn't require a reworking of the networking code. Maybe sell it as a premium DLC.

Multicrew SRV is more complicated, because it requires changes to the network coding.

Well, my reference was more to the likes of "space legs", and such- but you also bring up another good point regarding MC, because it actually has direct relevance to Space Legs, too.

I think if the community did less bickering about what's "more important", etc. and was more unified in its approach, we'd likely see more progressive development happening. As it stands, I wouldn't blame FD for sitting back with the popcorn and their feet kicked up in amusement watching it all on the forums. (Hell, I'm laughing about it just from a customer standpoint seeing a lot of these threads and debates)

I'll chalk it all up to the global politics of the time. Seems to be creating a more divisive world by the minute. I'll bet most of the politicians are laughing their butts off at how there's so much infighting that no one has time to look up and see how badly they're being bent over the table with instruments coated with sandpaper.

I was suspicious at first... this sounded like one of those kind of threads I was going to have to reply to with "Well show us your portfolio then", but it wasn't. It was just a job post repost.

If I didn't love what I do already, and was able to take my considerable arsenal with me, and England wasn't a socialist nation, I might consider this... but I do love what I do, they'd never allow me to import more than 100 handguns and rifles, and it is a socialist nation, which just doesn't sit well with my own personal values. Nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

Tanks in a game about spaceships? It has all happened before and it will all happen again?

This game is not just about space ships. The original vision for Elite has always been that you're a person in a real futuristic setting, not just a ship.

The core of Elite is a space sim, but it should move beyond that to include other vehicles and EVA (extravehicular activity). The Scarab is like an appetizer for more ground vehicles.

 be careful, you're going to "trigger" the EVE-in-cockpits crowd! ;) They're all about the "It's ALL about spaceships!" view.

I agree, according to the original vision of ED- it was always designed to be centered around EVA.

That was supposed to be the clearly definitive difference between ED and Elite 1984... aside from updated graphics and HOTAS flight model capability.

Soo... more organic machinery coming up..? :7

Rich Corinthian leather seats :p

I hope they also redesign those multicannons and pulse lasers from the '80s.

The new shock cannon looks pretty good. That said, I would not mind an art pass over everything. As I wrote in an earlier post, we all have much better graphics hardware these days...
